Despite the risk, you feel honesty is the right move. Youâre trying to fix their lives by handing the thieves of their lives to the authorities. Perhaps it was out of ignorance, but Ashley stole your motherâs life. Is it theft if she does the same? Cassandra deserves the truth, but so does your mother deserves someone who defends her.
âThanks,â you begin, figuring out how to start. âI appreciate the offer.â
âGood.â She turns her back on you but undoubtedly feels your presence. âSomething wrong?â
âActually...â You approach her, timidly. âThereâs something Iâd like to ask. What... What do you think about what your father did to your mom?â
That startles her. âItâs horrible. Itâs... evil.â
You sigh, but not in relief. âYou know what happened, right?â
âNot really.â She pushes herself deeper into Tinaâs bed, grabbing her legs. âI never met the guy. Mom divorced him as soon as I was born.â
âWhy wait for so long?â Claire asks.
âDonât ask me. Momâs the only one who knows.â
âShe never told you he was a corrupt judge, didnât she?â
âNot until now. When I asked about Dad, Ashie told me he was a good-for-nothing that never loved her. Barbie doesnât remember him a lot, but claims the opposite â at least, until now.â
âWell, he was â and he did terrible things. You werenât the only ones to be replaced.â
âAshley was going to, right?â
âUh-huh. And whatâs worse is, he was gonna replace her with... With someone he sent to prison. Your sister never told you about what happened when she was sixteen, right?â
âOh yeah, that...â She winces in disgust. âI remember Ashie always told me, âbe careful around boys, and especially older menâ. She was always watching â like, can you imagine she vetted all my friends? Barbieâs too.â
âBut you know the reason why, right?â
âOf course. Some creep tried to get fresh with her, but she told Mom and he was sent to prison.â
âWell, your dad was the one who presided that case. Then, years later, he changes his mind and joins forces with the same creep and two other guys to replace all of you, out of revenge.â
âEww!â You see Cassandra grab her stomach. Why would Dad do that? Whatâs wrong with him?â
âHeâs twisted, Cassandra.â
âYou donât have to tell me twice. How do you know this, though?â
âThatâll take some time. I can start by saying the mistake the creep made â he changed into her in front of our house.â
âWait,â Claire asks. âHe did?â
âYeah! You were distracted on your phone, so you didn't notice. Anyways, I notice he drops a pen--â
âPen?â
âYeah. The one he dropped turns people into skins; itâs what we used to recover you.â
âAh. Go on, then.â
"You can imagine the rest. I grab the pen, follow the guy and zap him. Except... I know itâs doing the same thing, but I... wore your sister.â
âEww!â You see Cassandra looking at you with disgust, and you recoil.
âNow you see why I say my brotherâs an idiot?â
âHey - I was curious! Plus, itâs not always when you get the chance like that!â
âStill! I thought youâd... I dunno, call the cops or something. Youâre disgusting!â
âHe couldâve, yâknow, not told you.â Youâre surprised Claireâs on your side, though sheâs enjoying twisting the knife while at it. âPlus, Ashley trusts him despite that, no?â
âDoes she know?â
âShe...â You feel its best if you get to the point. âYou remember what I told you about my parents splitting up, right?â
âYeah - that you learned your dad had an affair with Ash, you told your mom, your mom threw your dad away, then the guy that was wearing me came and zapped your dad and all that stuff. Whatâs that got to do with everything?â
âThereâs...â You gulp. âMore to that story.â
âWhat more?â
âFor starters, it was while I wore your sister that I learned about Dadâs infidelity. But itâs even worse. I didnât just tell Mom. I... I had her put on Ashley so that she could see it for herself.â
Cassandra opens her eyes, completely flabbergasted. âNo way... Why did you make your mother wear my sister instead of... I dunno, confronting your dad?â
âMom wouldnât have believed me. It wouldâve been an uphill battle to convince her. And by then, maybe that other guy wouldâve taken Ashley for himself. If I hadnât done what I did...â
âWhat did you do?â
You take a deep breath, as you may seal your fate with this confession. âI was so angry that Dad cheated on Mom with your sister, I had to take it on someone. So I took that creepâs skin and burned it.â
âHold on,â Claire interrupts, facing you. âThat means the skins can be destroyed?â
âPretty much. Like... with any other body you burn, I guess.â
âHe was gonna ruin my sisterâs life, so...â You see a fiery look in Cassandraâs eye. âI guess he deserved it.â
âThatâs the problem. I did something Iâm not proud of, and that almost gets us into trouble. Promise me that, until I finish, you wonât say a thing, alright?â
âUh-huh.â
âAnyways... Mom wanted to punish Dad for what he did, so she took a drastic decision. She decided to keep wearing Ashley to prevent their relationship.â
âWhat!?â Cassandra exclaims, choking up.
âYou promised you wouldnât say a thing, remember!? When Quentin came with another pen â a brown one â she learned the truth about their relationship. Dad never told Ashley he was married, but she suspected. And, uh... your sister didnât care.â
âThat canât be right... I called Ash out because she liked older men, but after what happened to her?â
That stuns you, but you push further. âYou could ask your own sister â and I donât mean Mom. She figured it was the best way to punish them. Mom decided to come clean with everyone, though, which is why my sisterâs living with my Dad.â
âTechnically I wasnât agreeing with what she did,â Claire clarified, âbut I thought her brand of revenge was cool.â
âSo you think itâs fair that I lose a sister because of her own mistakes?â
âIf you saw how she was before?â you tell Cassandra. âListen - so Mom and I lied about her, uh, âbreakdownâ. But to be fair, Mom was well on her way to it. Divorcing Dad would leave her without a future.â
She sighs in frustration. âListen; I know you told me not to interrupt you, but if that story was bullshit, then whatâs the skin Barbieâs wearing?â
âA cloned skin, meant to be a replacement â just like your dad did to feign his death. She thought itâd be a good replacement, but it ended up... robotic. Since it wouldnât work, we figured one of you could wear it, so we decided on Barbara.â You notice she doesnât reply, giving you time to finish. âI know itâs wrong--â
âItâs horrible,â Cassandra states. âNo, worse than horrible. I donât even know what word to use. Your momâs no different from my dad and the guys that wore Barbie and me.â
âAm I just like them?â
She gives you a hard, pained look, only to turn her head aside. âYouâre a jerk. But youâre willing to do the right thing.â She lowers her head, sniffing. âI was wondering why Ashie had changed. Now I know why.â
âI know this must sound hard to you, but Momâs got your best interests in her mind. She even said she loves you as if you were her real sisters.â
âThatâs the problem,â she reveals. âAshie could be harsh with me, but she cared. I know she warned me about older men because she cared. And Iâm sorry that my sister destroyed your family. She shouldnât have â it's wrong.â
âFor what itâs worth, so is what my momâs doing, but...â
âYou said it. You want to see your mom happy.â Despite her pain, she still manages to flash a timid smile. âI know every kid wants the best for their family. I bet your big sister wants your parents to reunite, no?â
âShe wants Mom to remake her life. But Momâs got a point. Itâs gonna be hard for her.â
âShe should try. Still â what I wanted to say is, ever since Iâve been here, I thought Ashie changed. Sheâs less strict, more loving. Itâs like...â She hisses and tears up. âShe was like a second mom to me. Maybe leaning too much on the strict part. âCassie, you better not flunk at collegeâ. âCassie, stop being such a flirtâ. âCassie, your future comes firstâ. And I was tired of it!â
âThat sounds like Tina,â Claire says, and you snort in agreement.
âBut now, sheâs... Different. Kinder. More forgiving. Almost like she knew she messed up.â
âAnd that sounds like Mom.â
âItâs so hard to accept sheâs not the real deal when sheâs been... Well, not honest, but very open. I guess itâs because she sees in me another daughter. I wanna hate her, but she rescued us, and she wants to save Mom, and...â
âI guess itâs her way of apologizing for, well... 'Borrowing' your big sisterâs life.â You jerk your head towards the door, telling Claire to let Cassandra take a breather. âIâll let you digest it a little before we can talk a little more.â
âNo.â She takes a deep breath, letting her anger and sorrow wash away with the flowing air. âI thought I was going mad. I had a good relationship with Ash, but not the best. But now? Sheâs become a better sister than before.â
âCome again?â
She looks at you, confused and in pain. âI canât believe I feel more attached to an impostor than to my real sister.â Despite her confusion, she seems to hold no ill will towards you. âI thought I was going mad, but now I know why. Thanks for telling me.â
âSo, now that you know... Will you forgive her? Because if you want her to take your sister off, maybe itâs not the best--â
âI want a talk,â she demands. âHer, you guys and me. I want to hear it from her own lips. And if she screws up? I want her to suffer the same fate as my dad.â
