Chapter #4

A Guard and a Shoplifter

    by: Unknown Author IconMail Icon
As you stroll through the bustling mall, you notice a commotion near one of the clothing stores. A young guard, no older than twenty-two, is sternly lecturing a high school girl who looks both defiant and embarrassed. The girl, clutching a stolen item tightly to her chest, is arguing back, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and shame. The guard, whose name tag reads "Ryan," is clearly trying to do his job, but his tone is harsh, and his words are cutting. The girl, Jenna, is firing back with equal intensity, her cheeks flushed with frustration.

You can almost feel the tension between them, like two magnets repelling each other. But then, an idea sparks in your mind. What if they weren’t repelling each other? What if they were drawn together?

Ryan’s stern expression softens as he looks at Jenna. There’s something about her defiance, her fiery spirit, that suddenly strikes him as... endearing. He doesn’t just see a shoplifter anymore; he sees a girl who’s lost, who needs guidance, who could be so much more if someone just believed in her. His voice, still firm, takes on a gentler tone.

“Look,” Ryan says, his words no longer accusatory but filled with concern, “I get it. Life’s tough, and sometimes we make mistakes. But stealing… it’s not the way. You’re better than this.”

Jenna, on the other hand, feels a strange warmth spread through her chest as she looks at Ryan. His words, which moments ago felt like an attack, now feel like genuine concern. She notices the way his eyes crinkle at the corners when he speaks, the way his voice carries a quiet strength. For the first time, she feels a pang of guilt for what she’s done. She lowers her gaze, her voice softening.

“I… I didn’t mean to,” Jenna murmurs, her voice barely above a whisper. “I just… I don’t know. I wasn’t thinking.”

Ryan nods, his expression sympathetic. “We all make mistakes. What matters is what you do after. You’ve got a chance to make things right.”

The tension between them dissipates, replaced by an unspoken connection. Jenna looks up at Ryan, her eyes searching his face. There’s something about him now—something kind, something trustworthy. She feels a strange warmth in her chest, a feeling she can’t quite explain.

“I’m sorry,” Jenna says, her voice sincere. “I’ll put it back. I promise.”

Ryan smiles, a genuine, warm smile that reaches his eyes. “Good. That’s the first step. And hey, if you ever need someone to talk to… I’m here.”

Jenna’s cheeks flush again, but this time it’s not from anger or shame. It’s something else—something softer. She nods, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “Thanks… um, I’m Jenna, by the way.”

“Ryan,” he replies, extending his hand. Jenna hesitates for a moment before taking it, her hand trembling slightly in his. Their eyes meet, and for a brief moment, the world around them seems to fade away. The noise of the mall, the shoppers passing by—it all becomes background static.

You watch from a distance, a satisfied grin on your face. The orb has done its work perfectly. What started as a confrontation has turned into something entirely different—something that feels like the beginning of a story. A romance drama, perhaps. But why settle for watching it on TV when you can create it in real life?
