Rosy Revenge

And then…nothing.

The blissful feeling subsided almost as quickly as it had come upon her, leaving her frowning in confusion. Looking down at herself, she saw her body was still emitting a bright shade of pink, but other than that, nothing was out of the ordinary.

“Sooo…” Vi chimed in after several moments of awkward silence, “that’s it?”

“Awww, that’s so lousy!” Fayetta shouted in frustration, her shoulders slumping as she sat down onto the branch. “It wasn’t even that sweet!”

“Maybe you just don’t have the right taste buds,” Vi suggested. “Gimme!”

She reached over and took the vial from its propped up position next to them, pausing in brief surprise over Fayetta’s lack of protest—though it was clear her enthusiasm had waned considerably. Mirroring Fayetta’s action from moments before, she tipped the vial and drank a trace amount. She appeared to consume slightly more than her predecessor, though it may have only seemed that way due to her quicker movement. In the next few moments, Vi experienced a similar arc of sensations to Fayetta, which ended in the same anti-climatic result as the only evidence of consumption was the pink hue she herself now sported as well.

“Meh, it really does just turn you pink,” Vi grimaced in disgust, taking the initiative to slam the cork back into the top of the vial in a gesture reflecting both of their disappointment. “If I wanted to do that I’d just roll around inside a sunset petunia for a few seconds. What a stupid thing to make into a drink. These heavyfoots get dumber every season.”

“At least it’s still shiny, I guess..bah, but it’s not even as good as the solid shinies,” Fayetta rapped her knuckles against the glass container and shook her head at the soft *tink tink* sound it returned. “They always store drinks in this see-through stuff that breaks easily.”

She got up, picked up the vial and tossed it rather casually back into the nearby crevice she had hidden it before, covering it once again with a pile of leaves though not with nearly as much care this time.

“C’mon,” she heard Vi behind her, with a bit of restored verve to her tone, “let’s go find the heavyfoot that you got this from and teach ‘em a lesson!”

Fayetta turned and cringed sheepishly. “Oh, I…uh…actually don’t know where they are. I was in such a hurry to escape I didn’t really see where I was going.”

Vi rolled her eyes. “Sheesh, Fay-Fay, it’s a wonder you don’t lose track of your own wings. Fine, any heavyfoot’ll do. There’s a nearby clearing where they often ride by on their beasts. We’ll look around there for a bit.”

As the two winged deviants took off toward what turned out to be a small, dusty path that led out of the forest toward the town of Osto, it began to rain. This proved no challenge to the pair as raindrop dodging was a common pastime among their kind, but by the time they reached the path, it had turned to quite the muddy mess, which any creature using it for travel would find difficult to use. Searching up and down the length of the puddle-filled mire, Fayetta was unsuccessful in her search at first, until she heard a whistle from Vi further down the road. Heading in that direction, she saw the other pixie beckon her excitedly from a hiding spot in a large shrub next the path.

“Hey! I found one over here!” Vi pointed beyond the shrub to a female figure holding the reins of a mule hitched to a small cart filled with various goods. Both the woman and her beast were making barely any progress through the thick muck of the trail, which they had obviously been traveling quite a while already as her clothes were completely soaked through, her dripping brown hair practically glued to her forehead.

Rhea Halsey, a human traveling merchant, had finally managed with some effort to supply her mule and cart with enough momentum to continue, but since she had been pulling on them with both arms, she had not actually been facing the direction they were going for a long time and had not noticed the trunk of a fallen tree lying across the path in front of them until she was nearly upon it.

“Argh! What is this thing doing here?” she muttered rather loudly, enough for the pixies to hear. She trudged over to inspect the log, only to inadvertently pull one of her feet free from a boot that got stuck in the mud. She slipped it back on with considerable difficulty, then turned and bent down to try moving the log.

“Ok, go ahead and hex her!” Vi gestured eagerly. Fayetta watched as the woman was clearly making no headway whatsoever with the log more than three times her size and even more times her weight. The only movement that occurred was her feet losing friction and sliding backward, causing her to slip and fall face first into the slushy dirt.

“Ugh, not again,” Rhea mumbled, again to no one in particular as she sat up on her knees and bent her head back in helpless exasperation.

“Ummm…you sure you didn’t do that already?” Fayetta asked skeptically.

“No, but you know how clumsy these heavyfoots already are.” Vi replied. “C’mon! Maybe she’ll lose some shinies from her pockets if she slips again.”

“Sure, but…” Fayetta still paused, feeling an unexpected sense of pity, but finally shrugged. “…oh fine.”
