It was another lazy Saturday for you, Mark Jones. You were sitting at home, wasting the day away in bed as you contemplated what you should do to kill time. Your phone was pretty dry as your girlfriend was busy at work and none of your friends seemed to be texting you.
“God I need something to do,” you told yourself as you decided to look up if anything interesting was going on around your house. Looking it up, you seemed to stumble upon a flea market that was going on a couple blocks from your house.
“Well I guess it beats sitting in here all day,” you said to yourself as you got up out of bed and prepared to walk down. You slipped on your sneakers and grabbed your wallet as you made your way out of your room and out of the house.
The walk wasn’t too far as it took roughly five minutes for you to arrive at the flea market. It was being held in an empty parking lot with rows and rows of tables and tents filled with items for you to purchase. You picked a row and began to slowly walk through.
Each row seemed to blend in with the last as nothing seemed to be jumping out to you. It seemed like a decent amount of vendors were selling junk out of their garages that you weren’t really interested in buying. That was until you stumbled upon a vendor that seemed to have hundreds of pieces of jewelry for sale. The lady running the booth spotted you and smiled.
“Hello young man, can I help you with anything?” She asked as her tone was very welcoming. The lady seemed to be older as she had grey hair and had a decent amount of wrinkles on her face. She wore a long skirt with a wool sweater and glasses. You looked at her and smiled.
“No I’m just looking for now, thanks,” you replied as you studied the pieces on the tables. There was a decent mix of jewelry with pieces consisting of diamonds, gold, and silver. The lady let you take it all in before attempting her sales pitch.
“Any special girl you want to impress? I bet she’d love to have anything off this table here,” the lady said as she pointed to a table that featured matching sets of jewelry. Some of the sets were designed for one person to have both pieces while others seemed to be designed more for both partners to have one piece that matched. You looked at this table and thought about your girlfriend, Cindy, a little bit.
“I don’t know, she’s a hard girl to impress. I think I’ll pass,” you said as you didn’t see anything you liked and began to walk away. The lady noticed her sale was beginning to walk away and decided she needed to up her game. She called out to you to stop you.
“Young man, I have something for you. Please, come check it out,” she called out as you turned around to face her. She had a smile still on her face as she motioned for you to walk back to her. You decided to hear her out and began to walk back to her.
“This set doesn’t have to be for her but I think you’ll enjoy this one,” the lady said as she bent over and began to search for something under one of the tables. She popped back up a couple seconds later with two necklaces in her hands. They seemed to be identical to one another as they were gold with a single green stone attached to them.
“They’re pretty,” you said, pitying the lady. She just continued to smile as you prepared yourself for another sales pitch.
“They’re more than pretty, they’re magical.” You rolled your eyes at this one and pretended to still be interested. “These necklaces here will let you swap something with someone else. All you need to do is to both be wearing the necklaces and you’ll be able to swap freely among each other.” You had to admit, this lady really seemed eager to sell these necklaces to you.
“Right and these necklaces will also bring me great wealth and allow me to fly,” you joked as you began to turn to walk away. As you did so, the lady grabbed your arm.
“I’m not lying. They really are magical. Look, put this one on. If it doesn’t work, you can keep it,” she said as she held out one of the necklaces. You decided to go along with the deal and picked up the necklace. Feeling it, you could tell that it was real gold and the stone wasn’t some cheap fake stone. You unclipped the necklace and slipped it on as the old lady did the same.
“Well, they are pretty decent looking necklaces,” you said as you looked at the one around your neck and the lady’s neck. She just smiled as she thought about what would be the best thing to show you what the necklaces could do.
“And they’re magic,” she said as the green stone began to flow and you suddenly felt a tingling sensation on the top of your head. You reached up and felt that your hair was beginning to feel… different. The texture seemed to become softer as it also seemed to be growing longer.
“What the fuck,” you softly uttered as the changes rapidly began to occur. In a matter of seconds, you noticed long, grey hair was now sitting in front of your eyes. Brushing it to the side, you couldn’t help but notice that the old lady’s hair suddenly was brown and cut exactly the same as your own hair.
“Believe me now,” the lady said with a smile as you suddenly were hit by the realization that the necklaces really were magical. “You seem like a nice kid, give me $20 and they’re all yours.” You quickly dug into your pocket and handed her the money as you were still in shock to what had happened. All you knew now was that you were coming home with these necklaces, end of story.
