Chapter #6

Sleigh Ride To Treachery

by: Sly F Author IconMail Icon
"What exactly can I do for you?" asked Holmes.

"Perhaps we'd better discuss this in the sleigh on our way to the North Pole," replied Mimi. "We have no time to lose, and the reindeer are getting impatient."

"You'll want to put on some warmer clothes, though," said Rayray. "It's going to get very cold."

"Reindeer!" said I. "Warmer clothes! Certainly you're not going to waste your time on these delusions, Holmes!"

"Come now, Watson. One doesn't often see reindeer in London in summer. We must take this opportunity."

Holmes appeared rather amused and humored our visitors. He donned the outfit of earflapped travelling cap and heavy cloak that The Strand's illustrator was so fond of, an outfit that would be quite unseasonable for England at that time of year. I reluctantly pulled on a thick overcoat and warm hat myself.

We followed the beguiling young ladies outside, where even Holmes struggled to hide his surprise at the sight of a sleigh with two reindeer hitched to it. The shock must have been even plainer to read on my face than his.

We took a seat behind the ladies in the back of the sleigh. Mimi flicked the reins.

"On Cupid! On Vixen!"

The reindeer galloped down Baker Street and then... began to ascend from the road! We were pulled into the air and then soaring through the sky. Even Holmes couldn't help crying out in surprise.

"Quite remarkable," said he, peering down at the ground below. "How is such an effect achieved, I wonder?"

"There is something I should warn you both about," Mimi said. "We must conduct this investigation without the knowledge of the man you refer to as Father Christmas. If St. Nicholas catches outsiders within the village walls, I am afraid neither of you will ever be permitted to leave."

"We should have been advised of that before we boarded your vehicle!" I said.

"You can both just stay with me forever!" said Rayray, looking over her shoulder at us with a scandalous gaze. "I'll take very good care of you both. I promise!"

Holmes shoved his hands into the pockets of his cloaks, closed his eyes, and sunk his head upon his breast.

"What is the nature of this investigation?" he asked.

"Our village is very small and isolated," said Mimi. "It's very secure. No one enters or leaves without St. Nicholas allowing it. We all know each other very well. There's never even been any reason to lock our doors. But I believe there's a traitor in our midst. Someone trying to sabotage our whole operation. It began with..."
