This is your captain speaking.
Okay, I wasn't quite a captain yet when my story starts; but it feels so good to say, I couldn't resist.
Okay, so my name is Casey Lambert. I'm a pilot for Vanguard Airlines.
After flying in the co-pilot's seat for the intercontinental flight to Geneva, Switzerland, I checked into my hotel room and started unwinding. I had three whole days before I was flying again, so I had no qualms about cracking open a cold one.
I was only a couple of sips into that beer when someone knocked on my door. Since I hadn't ordered room service yet, I certainly wasn't expecting company. "Who is it?" I asked, figuring someone had the wrong room.
"It's Hillyer."
Hillyer was one of the suits in charge of the flight crews for Vanguard, so I got up out of my chair immediately and let him in. He was in a suit hardly looking like he'd just gotten off the same plane I had, and he had a garment bag slung over his shoulder. "How can I help you?"
He sniffed. "Did I interrupt anything?"
I shook my head. "Just unwinding. I wasn't due for another flight for a few days. Has that changed?"
"Not at all, Lambert. The next three days are yours. And, after you fly home, you'll have a week's vacation." He brought the garment bag forward. "Speaking of that flight home, you'll be wearing this." He gave me the bag.
I unzipped it, and couldn't believe my eyes. "Are you kidding me?"
"I am completely serious. You've put in your hours. You've earned this."
In the garment bag was a captain's uniform. I had received my promotion. "I don't know what to say."
"You don't have to say anything. It'll be official on your scheduled flight. Welcome, Captain." With that, he saluted me and left.
******************************
So now my three days in Geneva were a celebration. I called my friends back home, giving them the good news. Then, not sure what to do to mark the occasion, I watched some local TV, figuring I'd see something to inspire me.
I did.
Between segments of the local morning news was an ad for a place called the Schaffhauser Clinic. Alternating from French to German to English and back, but with English subtitles, Dr. Schaffhauser told about what his clinic did. "No longer do you need to accept the body you were born with," he said. "We can give you the genitals you desire, fully functional, within a matter of hours. Surprise your partner with the new you. It is no longer how you were born; it is how you wish to be."
This spoke to me. Ever since I was a little girl, when I found out what made boys and girls different, I had wondered what it would be like to have what boys had. I liked being a girl, but that curiosity never went away.
Now, here in Geneva, the Schaffhauser Clinic was scratching where I itched. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
