July 22, 2015 I'm going to start today to record on a daily basis whatever happens to strike my fancy. So, it is a very cool breezy day. I just posted 5 short book reviews to The Monthly Reading Challenge. I'm suppose to put away some winter wood today from the woodpile outside but I'm playing hookey from work to write so starting this blog will get done. I'm having a daily fight with a flock of English Sparrows that are trying to take over my barn. They are making a terrible mess so they have to go. I have destroyed several nests so far they don't leave but they get out of the barn when I am around. I'm just starting the fight so I guess I don't know how far I have to go to discourage them. I'm trying not to spread myself to thin on WDC because I find so many things that are interesting here and I am trying to work on a new story. I really enjoy sitting at my desk with a cup of tea and reading blogs on WDC. |
Use these words in your blog: cart, hierarchy, warm, predator, institution, block, mix and think. Have fun!  The hierarchy of institutions can be predatory. A human predator is often difficult to spot. Cart out the think part of your brain. When the weather is too warm, we lack the initiative to listen and sometimes block our intuition. Mix up the air with a fan or some other cooling apparatus. (The last three days are heavy with heat and thunderstorms. The weather this year has been uppsy doosy. Just got an email from the electric company about not using to much electricity because of the heat. I'm trying to decide if a load of wash, two running fans and the computer are classified as too much for one afternoon.  Interesting choice of word list. Keep Cool.) |
| Day 3809: July 26, 2023 Prompt: “Our knowledge is a little island in a great ocean of nonknowledge.” – Isaac Bashevis Singer I never heard of this author before, so I looked him up. I also read a couple opinions about one of his books. In general, the critics were in favor of the stories but, critical about the translations of some of his works. I have no opinion about the critics or their opinions since I never read one of this authors books. I was actually looking to understand the word nonknowledge. Particularly as it applies to human knowledge being a little island. I have to agree because one person gaining knowledge during their lifetime can only acquire a certain amount of knowledge during the short duration of time on the earth as a human. When I think of famous scientists and scholars who have passed on knowledge discovered so that others may not have to chase the same knowledge trail. It seems incredible that we are not as wild and untamed as the jungle apes. Also, because our societies on the earth are not equally educated so some of the least educated still often reside in the throes of superstition instead of knowledge that has been scientifically proven. We are encouraged to pursue knowledge so we can make important decisions as individuals and pass knowledge to others so they can also make proper decisions of life. I'm guessing a great ocean of nonknowledge may indicate that sea of people who either do not believe in gaining knowledge or who are otherwise not in a position to gain knowledge because of one type of society or another. If I look at the quote in this light, I have to agree. I leave you with this insight or question as it may stand to be. What are we passing on in our DNA? How will it benefit future generations if we chase knowledge for its own value? And, if heaven is our inheritance how will it gain us to be as educated as possible before we enter that realm? It's that time of year. We are once again filling the barn with hay. One bad storm slammed itself against our house last week. It has been a while since I saw a storm that bad but, we were forewarned so safe to watch it fly through. Happy trails and stay safe. |
| Prompt: "Silent Summer - a never-ending heat wave, devoid of birdsong, insect hum, and all the weird and wonderful living noises that subconsciously keep us company." ~ Mark Lynas Some of the prompt is close. Certainly, we are having a lot of summer heat. The heat is accompanied by high humidity. When it is not to hot it is raining. I did notice a lack of birdsong in the afternoons and also insect hums. But early mornings Birdsong still hails the rising sun. And there are lots of insects to bother us on a regular basis. Water does not stay in the bird bath long. Our mailbox is old and was filled with stinging bees at one point. They were the kind that become enraged and sting without warning. They harbored yellow and black stripes. We disposed of them because it was the only way to get them out of the box. Interestingly, the mailman never complained. Once, I removed mail out of the box only to find a few bees stuck inside the pile of mail in my hand. I dropped the pile of mail they flew out and missed stinging me. Another time this spring there was a large spider stuck in the pile of mostly circulars, when I removed the mail from the box. Spiders run from me, so it was not a problem. It jumped free of the pile of mail in my hand and ran off through the lawn grass. Probably happy to be in the green jungle where it could hide from the two-legged monster. (me!).  The most unusual thing I noticed early mornings is the shine from the sun as it rises. It is a bright clear white light. Unlike the coloring of the sky, I am used to when I'm up that early which is most days. I saw something online about it but, did not read the whole article. Now there is a new article about the depression in people being caused by the unusual weather. Did not stop to read that one either. Hope everyone is well and safe.  Which do you prefer men authors or women authors. When it comes to writing, I don't believe physical attributes produce flavor in the way people write. I do think personal life experience creates. Also, knowledge of social aspects of life also creates. Research of your subject may cause special insight as you write. Writing is so much more than male or female. The only difference I can see may come from the subject matter. The best book I ever read on aging was written by a women magazine editor who lived in France. In her 70's she wrote a book. The book was very specific about her aging experience and was written to make aging people aware since she herself had not read the same kind of material about aging anywhere else. (Sorry I don't remember the name of author or book). Write On. Happy Reading. |

I'm the most patient person in my life presently. Or at least I'm the one I see being patient with the problems afflicting me. What are these problems. Mediamessages from local calls that do not download onto my phone. No. I don't recognize the phone numbers, so I just delete them. Flea season hit and we had a lot of fleas but, I think that is under control now. Maybe. For some reason I'm fighting lethargy. I suddenly realized I have a lot of house upkeep to complete in time for winter and I believe we could have a very cold winter this year. Hope I'm wrong. As for Benjamin Disraeli, I guess I agree at least to a certain extent. After all what is genius. Is it an ability to see beyond what is normal in a certain time element. To have ability to understand in a place where misunderstanding is normal. To stand quiet when others are screaming. To organize in the midst of chaos? It takes patience to create when others are tearing things apart. OK. I'm finding it difficult to log onto writing.com on a daily basis. To much busy work. I'll try to do better. Keep safe. |
| July 1st is coming right up. Have you reflected on the first half of 2023? Did things go as you hoped? Do you have goals for the second half of 2023? No to the first question. I'm not sure I was hoping for anything special out of this year. I don't really have any goals for the year. I have some things I would like to see happen. Making them as goals isn't an option. Goals to me are things I intend to work toward and be sure to accomplish. The only real goal now is to pay the taxes for the year and keep the monthly bills paid so I can continue to live here. That is an ongoing goal for many years before this and many years to come. I was included in a recent craft show so I spent some time this month crafting a couple dog leashes and some bookmarks. The craft show was last Saturday, and it was interesting to spend a day away from home. I met a lot of people and even though it rained we had a canopy set up, so the intermittent rain was not a problem. There was not a large turn out because of weather I suppose. The temperatures were warm, and it was in a scenic location. Maybe I will go to another sometime. I'll think about goals. Maybe I can rouse myself to make a few. Have a good 4th of July celebration. |
| Day 3765: June 12, 2023 Prompt: Use these words in your blog entry: outside, thunder, polish, spring, rude, and frequent. Today is still spring. We are just getting over a drought. All the grass was turning brown. We had high heat temperatures and lots of sunshine. Starting in the night sometime rain moved into the area. Outside it is now pouring down steady patters of wet. The leaves on the trees are getting a good polish from the steady down pour. Nope no thunder. The grass rudely scorched by the heat over the last month is standing up, reaching into the water which is pouring from the atmosphere. I wonder how frequent the storms will be over the summer months. I don't want another six-week drought. And I don't want daily downpours for six weeks either. Just a nice balance between summer sun and rain would be nice. |
| Day 3760: June 7, 2023 Prompt: What is your favorite summer time activity? Describe in as much detail as possible. I don't really have just one activity that is my favorite. One thing I really look forward too is opening the windows. In the warmer weather I can leave them open all night. I can hear the sounds of the peepers (small frogs) on the pond. Crickets are one of the first sounds to herald the summer into place. I can hear the sounds from the beaver damn out in the woods where Canada Geese nest in the summer. I have not walked out there for several years. The pond of the damn creates marsh grass, a couple of foot high, around the edges. Canada Geese do some chatter when the area is disturbed. I always wonder if a bear or human is prowling near the dammed-up water near where they nest. Bull Frogs croak loudly in unison, Croaking in a deep resonating tone. This sound also is from the beaver damn. It is actually a kind of disturbing sound and probably would help some muse write a thriller. And of course, there is the wonderful fresh air replacing the stale air within the house. We have so much cloudy weather in winter. In summer sunshine flows across the floors from the windows. The dogs and cats nap in the sunshine. We all get more exercise by walking outside. It helps us be more relaxed. Bye, bye cabin fever, hello sunshine, the smell of green from grassy fields and leafed out trees. I can sit on one of the porches and read. The roads are dry and clear for driving. I think missing all these small but necessary parts of summer is what sends people from the North to the southern parts of the country during the winter. Even so, winter also has its' blessings. |

Read part of a book by Nicole Krauss "Forest Dark" after lunch I plan to: continue with laundry. work on crochet projects while I listen to audio New Testament Scriptures. practice arpeggios, lessons, and music on my guitar. Then the rest of the day just read and play games on my kindle This is a typical type of day for me. Although somedays I refuse to do anything but read which catches up my energy reserves. |
| Prompt: Have you ever seen a falling star? Did you make a wish? Write about this in your Blog entry today. I always called them shooting stars. Yes, I have seen a few in my life. Not in the last couple years because I don't actually spend much time viewing the night skies. I don't remember ever making a wish. Or, I don't remember anyone saying you could make a wish. I made wishes at thanksgiving with the turkey wishbone. And there is the blowing out the candles on the birthday cake wish. I've participated in that idea. The longer I live the more I see the benefit of reality. Knowledge is important to make good decisions. My life became a whole lot more relevant when the "age of information started." I can see how I actively was seeking to make life better when I pushed for our family to get computers, internet, kindles, phones, and corn burning heaters. Every modern thing that comes on the market is not what I want. I like the objects that make life easier and give us knowledge. If I ever made wishes, when I was a child, I can't say they came true. I have experienced the fulfilment of honest talents. Mostly, other people were involved in helping get things I wanted or needed to fulfil my life. My life ambitions are not necessarily accepted by the people who I live with or worked with at any point. |
