I have the distinction today of getting to accompany West Virginia Secretary of State and other cabinet members on a tour of our facility. I do not know when they are arriving so I was told to wait here at my desk and they would call me down when the entourage arrives. I am designing a newsletter for the West Virginia Veterans Home called Bugler. The director thought I'd make a good addition to the tour group.

An image for my blog group Judges 21:25
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

What does it mean to do what is right in your own eyes? Is this something you do personally?

I do not do what I feel is right in my own eyes because there are many times that God and I disagree on what is right. For example, I could not care less what individuals do when they are not in my presence, yet God says some behaviors are sin. I have friends who are homosexuals. I tell them that what they do with their lives is none of my business personally. However God clearly states that homosexuality is a sin. I have friends who co-habitat with their girlfriends without marrying them. I do not care what they do personally. If they love each other so what? God on the other hand says that such behavior is sin. So when it boils right down to it, my opinion does not matter. God's opinion does!

I do not know much about biolet poetry. I will have to check it out. I love meter in any form.

A special time in my life would be my very first memory. I must have been about 3 and barely remember it. My dad took me to an old country store where we bought ice cream and toys. I remember playing with those toys. It was special.

I believe these verses mean that we are not to depend on ourselves when living a believer's life. We are not to try to manage our own lives. We are to leave the management of our lives to Jesus. We do that by simply doing the next right thing and allowing Jesus to decide our paths.

I liked this poem. There is a name for poems that describe a scene like this but I cannot think of it right now. It refers to a quiet, country and natural setting and is very similar to a ballad. The imagery here was wonderful. I could see night meeting day and the two becoming one as Mother Nature smiled on.

James 2:14-17
14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Does your life reflect your faith in Christ? Why or why not?"

I believe my life reflects my faith in Christ. I am the chaplain of the WV Veterans Home in Barboursville WV and I try to show Christ in everything I do. I tell the guys in my congregation that we may be the only Bible a sinner ever reads. I want my life to be different from the world.

I was walking up the hill the other day. Our compound is on a small hill so we refer to home as "the hill." As I was walking back from taking care of some business a police car went rolling by running lights and siren. I put my hands in the air and told one of the residents that the police had caught me. The man looked at me and said "Chaplain, the day you go to jail for anything is the day I will confess every sin I ever committed."

I asked him why he said that. He replied "Your as pure as the driven snow and we all know that. I can't picture you having enough of a past for them to lock you up."

I took that as a compliment. Apparently my policy of witnessing by my behavior rather than empty words is working. The administration here tells me that they hear the guys talking about how much they appreciate me. I don't do anything that Jesus would not have done. Well, I'm sure I do things Jesus would not have done but I try to live a godly life.

I want to apologize for getting my entry out late. I had a business meeting first thing this morning. I am in the process of starting a business called Rehab for Vets. It will be a long-term residential rehabilitation and treatment center for military veterans. I am going to use a different approach however. My facility will combine equestrian therapy with addiction rehab. Horses are sensitive animals. They can sense change in people and can be taught to respond appropriately when an addict is having issues. It has been done before in several places across the country with good results. The difference in my business is that we will specialize in the treatment of military veterans. 3/4 of my staff will be combat veterans. The other 1/4 will be veterans with small exceptions. We may have to hire non-veteran staff to help with the horses. It depends on whether we partner with a stable or run our own.

What do you think poets need?"

I think the most important thing a poet needs is education. They need to learn about poetry. Poetry is an art yes, but it is also a writing discipline or science. Poetry has measures called iambic measures. These measures have a certain beat that poetry must follow to be true poetry. A lot of what is written is beautiful expression but it follows no particular pattern. Therefore it is not poetry. This includes much of my own poetry.

Image #2235060 over display limit. -?- What is your favorite Christian song? Why?

I have a lot of "favorite" Christian songs. My all time favorite though has to be "Because He Lives." Why? I'm a Christian because He lives. I'm alive because He lives. Everything about me is Because He lives. I think the lyrics say it all. It is one of the few "contemporary" Christian songs that has doctrine. Most Christians anymore are too busy being "inclusive" and "politically correct" to care about doctrine. Christian worship songs aren't about doctrine. They are all about praise and the goodness of God, but there is nothing in them that denominations might disagree on. This is because the singers are out to make money and they want their songs to not go against the beliefs of any group. I like "Because He Lives" because the words are doctrinal. There is more doctrine in "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Because He lives" than in any song published in the past decade!

I wouldn't object to going on a space voyage with Xena, Princess Warrior! Of course, I suspect most men would enjoy her company.

I love Villanelle poetry! This one is no exception. I think the author did a fine job of telling this story about Santa Claus. What child does not look forward to Santa Claus? I'm sure there are children who are not taught about Santa Claus, but most kids look forward to Christmas. This poem tells about Santa seeing a group of children in the streets. It reminded me of the homeless children in our country.

I do not always read my Bible every day because I am often doing a thousand other chores for the Lord. However, I do pray every day even if it is only a brief prayer. I try to say prayers of thanksgiving because God sustains me day to day and provides for me. I live at the West Virginia Veterans Home where everything is provides for us. I know God provides this place for me. Without it and with God I would be on the streets and lost. As it is I owe everything to God. So yes, I pray a prayer of thanksgiving each day. God has given me purpose. I am training to be an Emergency Disaster Services volunteer with the Salvation Army. I took my basic EDS course Wednesday night. I will be taking the Safe from Harm class next Wednesday. I also took ServSafe training yesterday for my national food handlers card. It is a class that allows you to work with children. Once I have finished that and my criminal background check comes back, I will be certified as an EDS volunteer. I am looking forward to working as an EDS chaplain.

I think the planet is heating and preparing for the end. Peter tells us that the world will melt with a fervent heat. Jesus is coming again and when he does the old world will be destroyed and a new one created. It is only natural that the world would be heating up now. It is preparing to burn.
