Except in Scotland, where it now means to indulge in a punch-up, usually in groups and under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. It also refers to being high on Ecstasy (MDMA), a drug sometimes referred to as swedge. Historically, it referred to a blacksmith putting grooves in a horseshoe using a swedge - a type of chisel.

So, if a blacksmith high on swedge decides to swedge his bill, you might think twice about swedging him in case he pulls out his swedge.
