Everest

Just a minor point
and so we understand,
Sir Edmund was no Brit,
he hailed from Newsy Land.

Another thing to note
no matter how we thirst
both he and Sherpa Tenzing
never said who was the first.

Illustration of a comedian entertaining a crowd.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Stage

Stand up, stand up, comedian,
it’s funnier that way,
expound upon the facts of life
and make us laugh today,
retell your tales, let us forget
our cares and woes extreme,
deflate the pompous, make us smile,
let all be lost in humour’s stream.

Under the Greenwood Tree

The sun shines daily on the forest leaves,
while we walk below in shadowed eaves,
a cathedral of great towering trunks,
and hopefully no sign of skunks,
this woody paradise of filtered light,
you’ll remember if you’ve seen the sight,
good Robin’s onetime cheerful abode -
I’ve finished now so must hit the road.

Lament for a Tattered Poem

Oh dear, there’s a hole in my stanza,
it wasn’t there yesterday,
but I loaned it to Sancho Panza,
his donkey eats anything, they say,
or maybe the washing machine tore it
(I’m sure that first verse should be red) -
it could be that when I last wore it
the brambles left it hanging in shreds.

Answer

This oftentime’s a trick of mine
so what is mine becomes not thine,
when answer is required of me,
I’ll design it so that none can see,
with words that do not satisfy
the how and what and who and why,
and so I make you not annoyed
with how I dodge, obscure, avoid.

Clang

A sliver of silver
a glob of gold
a hopper of copper
a tincture of zinc
a can of tin
a lumen of aluminum
a bed of lead
we can fettle the metal.

Shadow Man

With dandelions for eyes,
the shadow man sees,
but does he see as me,
or only spreading skies?

Lying so flat on land,
his gaze is cast above,
and in his ear pours love
for depths of soil and sand.

Not All That Glitters

We’re all sitting in the shade of civilisation,
dwarfs on the shoulders of giants,
and it’s not the trend provides the motivation,
it’s tradition makes us all compliant.
So here’s to Mr Moneybags Buffet,
the trees of the forest got there alone -
not all plantations get to tough it,
lets be grateful we didn’t plant stones.

Spurned Advice

You know I would, I would do that,
without a thought, I’d stop it flat,
take my time, listen to reason,
all my excitement I’m gladly easin’
but remember please I’m not that rich,
I own no mansion, that’s the hitch,
my cards are low and so I fold ‘em,
I have no horses and so can’t hold ‘em.
