Picture of a dream with elephant, balloons and flying ship.

Sweet Dreams

“Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground”
Fire and Rain
- James Taylor

The elephant has landed
on the field of the cloth of green,
his balloons transforming
into rainbows of hot air adventures,
and the winged airship,
barque of the dread pirate Roberts,
turning for the Palace of Versailles
from the road that goes ever ever on.

Under the Bridge

Under the bridge where the homeless go,
where the cardboard cities continue to grow,
where lives are beached from the ebb and the flow,
where hope comes to die in pain and sorrow,

here where the trolls have long since departed,
gone for the goats far away and uncharted,
our fairy tales now not for the fainthearted,
filled only with souls that are broken and martyred.

Scandal

What’s all this clamor
I hear from Alabama?
Are the rumors true
or is it nothing new,
only fuss and drama
over words like armor,
and all are in a stew,
they’ve lost the letter U?

A phantom fish appears to a boy in the woods.

Ghostfish

Goldie, I know it’s so,
it’s cool your eyes do glow,
but must you be so big?
Is it some kind of dig?
Please, no more fireballs,
my guilt is wall to wall,
being haunted is my due
for flushing down the loo.

Isolation

Turning inward, like the bud
folding itself to hide from the night,
when I, so late, chance upon
what makes me stand alone,
unable to accept the dreams of others,
but know how truly I am one,
then it's armour or camouflage
in defence of isolation.

Talkin’ ‘bout my Generation

Music of my generation
has been our great veneration
resulting in sixties rebellion
long hair the badge of us hellions
now grey and vast paunched
we might regret what we launched
but the music is what we attest
as the best of all time in the west.

Note: Sorry about my occasional missing from action over the last few days but covid made a return and drained my energy. Nothing serious, but enough to slow me down.

Greeting a whale.

Put It There

Put it there,
If it weighs a ton

Put It There, Paul McCartney

Give me your hand,
I'd like to shake it,
I want to show you I'm your friend.
I don’t care
if it weighs a ton,
as long as you and I are here, put it there.
If I can make it clear,
It's all that matters in the end.

Note: I forget what they call it but there is a form in which the lines are taken from another poem or, as in this case, a song.

Wild Goose Chase

There they go,
honking their way through the upper atmosphere,
bound for warmer climes
and bountiful country,
easy living,
for northern snowbirds
from glacial lakes and bogs.

If I had wings…

Vaulting Ambition

As here on earth the nations turn to bickering
between themselves, the notions vain and petty,
with all debate reduced to mockery and snickering,
and reason disregarded as just so much confetti,
good men reviled and condemned with innuendo,
millions repeating lies to lead them all in thrall
to faithless gods while truth’s in diminuendo,
the vault of heaven silent as we design our fall.

A boy sips at a cup in darkened kitchen.}

Water

The boy sips at water from the tap
the kitchen dark
red electric bill crumpled in a corner
the cupboards bare
father gone when hope was too
mother down at the bingo
for boy and baby sister
life drips on.
