Little girl, old dog, and a mule.

Wanderlust

Running away with my best friends,
Jenny, old Caesar, and me,
it’s not that home has come to an end,
it’s just that I want to be free.

And now for the joys of the road,
to wander in lands never seen,
to swim in the sea where the river has flowed,
tell tales of the places I’ve been.

For Jordan Peterson

Interesting scientific facts
are becoming rather rare,
when everything is bought and sold
it’s hard for us to care.

If one side brooks no argument
and t’other gagged and bound,
the truth’s the one that’s crucified
and lies retain the crown.

Silken Wings

In the outer wards,
where the insane go,
the seriously beyond
all hope, condemned
against self harm
and danger to the rest,
in padded cells restrained.

Soft upholstered walls.

A little fellow in a rock window.

The Little People

Some people they have fairies,
their gardens bright and airy,
but I live in the woods you see,
with gnomes and creatures ugly.

There’s one lives here inside a stone,
his wife’s a goblin crone;
they run the local mud pie shop,
and sell me mutton chops.

Snicker

Sly giggle behind the masking hand
and flirting with forbidden thoughts,
though not to balk or make a stand,
mockery hid and seldom caught.

The snicker thrives in stealth and shade,
no promise given, no payment made,
so singular is its muffled raid,
unlike the laugh in loud parade.

Awake
and the night reluctant releases its hold,
sleep drains from my mind as orientation begins.

Day?
A passing moment delivers a handhold,
Wednesday the consensus of gathered memory.

Get up?
Bodily comfort assessed and five more minutes decided.

A girl regards her portraitist while a fire rages outside.

Fire and Faith

Fire in the outhouse burning bright
Fiery her hair in the stiffening breeze
Flung open the window for the morning air
Forlorn the dog’s despairing gaze
Fresh the fare on checkered tablecloth
Frank her gaze in painter’s eyes
Free her mood and confident
For her fate in Father’s hands.

A tree laden with diverse keys.

The Key Tree

The key tree waits
with key to paradise gate.
Choose wisely now,
can’t tell you how,
for only one
(the rest make fun)
can open wide,
let you inside.

Ouch

There's a red glow in the gloom,
enough to light up the room,
and I fear I may have awoken
all sleepers from here to Hoboken.

With my cries of utter despair,
I think I have shattered the air -
my oaths are anything but dumb
when the hammer connects with my thumb.

Intricately carved doors.

Craftsman

‘Tis done, my lord,
just as you wished,
the door so intricate
as you envisaged,
exactly as you said.

You have done well,
now make another,
its mirror image.
