…the Path of the Body. In a way it mused, Ethan would be getting what he desired; to be closer to this Jess woman.
Just not in the way he would expect.
—— Some time later —-
Ethan’s eyes flew open as he regained consciousness. His room was dark, with just a hint of light coming in from the streetlight outside. As his head cleared, questions began to rush through his mind. How long was he out for? What the hell happened to him? And why did he feel…off?
The first question was easy enough to answer. A quick glance at his PC’s screensaver indicated that he’d been out for a few hours. It was just a few hours before dawn, which then led him to his next inquiry.
What had happened to him? The last thing he remembered was putting on his dad’s old ring, and then a wave of pain shooting through his arm as he did. He vaguely recalled someone talking to him, someone whose voice he couldn’t recognize but they had mentioned Jess’s name for some reason. That much he remembered, before passing out.
And as for the third question? He couldn’t quite put his finger on it. As he got up off the floor, he felt smaller than usual. Not in a metaphorical sense either, like literally everything in his room felt just a little bit bigger. He felt parts of him jiggling that he had never felt before, especially on his chest.
It took him a moment to catch his bearings, as his sense of balance seemed to have been momentarily warped. Catching himself on the wall, he quietly opened his door, and peeked out. It seemed quiet. His mom and sister were likely both deep asleep at this point. He opted not to bother them, and stumbled into the bathroom across the hall from him.
As he shut the door and turned on the lights, he was surprised to see a familiar face staring back at him.
It was Jess.
But…not quite as he remembered her. She seemed to be dressed in his clothes for some odd reason. Her dark black hair was a lot shorter than he remembered. She seemed to lack much of that confidence aura she usually had around her. Jess seemed surprised to see him. Her mouth was open just like his was, her dark brown eyes staring right back into his.
