The first Greek word Peter used was "philia" from which we derive the name of Philadelphia and means "brotherly love." Jesus wanted a deeper commitment from Peter so he asked again. The second time Peter used a Greek word that means a type of sacrificial love. In other words, he told Jesus that he loved Jesus enough to go the extra mile with Jesus or make small sacrifices for Jesus. Jesus wanted a deeper commitment yet and at this point peter realized that Peter loved Jesus enough to die for Jesus. Thus Peter was "grieved" over Peter's original denial of Jesus.  |

The very fact that I can even draw a breath is a praise report. I would not even exist without God. So He gets all my praise. I find it hard to believe that anybody could have trouble worshiping God. I have looked up some of my ancestors on Ancestry.com and found that I had a great grandfather who served as a battalion commander of the 36th Ohio Division during the Civil War. He was assigned to General Meade which means he fought at Gettysburg. He was an artillery commander, meaning he ordered the cannons around. He himself would not have given the orders to fire since he was a colonel. He would have reported directly to General Meade in Gettysburg. He probably knew President Grant and may have met Lincoln. |
| "Prompt: Do I allow myself to be taught through God’s word how to overcome pain, weakness and challenges?" I am not sure I follow the question. I believe it is asking if I learn that the secret to being joyous and positive even in the midst of trials and pain is reliance on God's word. I agree with that 100%. I know there are many scriptures in God's word that come to mind when I am in the midst of a trial. One is Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." Many Christians do not realize that if they are living lives of peace and tranquility they are not living Christian lives. Jesus said that those who followed Him would suffer persecution. Last night in Church History II for my graduate class we studied William Tyndale. Many do not know that 80% of the words we read in English translations today were originally translated by William Tyndale. His reward for doing so was that He was strangled and then burned at the stake. Due to the fact he was a former priest, they did not burn him alive. Jesus said that His followers would be persecuted for believing in Him. I see this happening all the time. It happens when a shop owner is sued for saying "no" to baking a cake or catering a dinner for a gay marriage. It happens to me when I would love to become certified to perform marriages but choose not to become bonded so I can avoid being sued for refusing to perform a gay wedding. It's not that I personally care that a couple is gay, but God says it is sin. I also find my hands bound at work due to the separation of church and state. Since I am a chaplain for the state of West Virginia, there are things I simply cannot do without drawing the State into a violation of the constitution. This is all persecution. | "Prompt: Am I vulnerable with God? Do I invite him in to know my pain, weaknesses and fears? Do I open myself up to be corrected, trained and instructed by God’s word?" I try to always be vulnerable with my Savior. I really have no pain or troubles because I am holding His hand. I think worry and fear is a state of mind. I lived in that state of mind for many years, many decades. Then one day I got sick and tired of being sick and tired and began to look for the silver lining in every cloud. Now it's gotten to the point where I really don't see anything but the silver. I admit that my living situation has a lot to do with that. God has placed me at the West Virginia Veterans Home. Since I am technically unemployed and have no taxable income, I live here for free. I hold several positions here, including peer support specialist, chaplain, and floor leader. I receive a stipend for those positions as well as my room and board. So basically, in in-kind services and stipend I receive my income. I need nothing although I enjoy having spending money for soft drinks every day. The worry though is something I no longer do. I leave my pain at Jesus' feet. They call it a "hunter's moon" because hunters, particularly wolves, take advantage of the light of the full moon to hunt. Many animals, deer especially, cannot see well with a full moon because the bright light blinds them. This gives wolves the advantage, thus "hunter's moon." |
| "Prompt: Do you believe you can be completely truthful with God? Why or Why not?" I believe we may as well be because God already knows. He knows our hearts. If we approach Him and act one way when we actually feel another we are lying to Him. He knows we are lying and counts it as sin. Being respectful to God is one thing. However if I go to God and try to blow a smoke screen God sees right through it. I have approached God when I was so angry at Him that all I wanted to do was cuss Him and beat Him up. (This was years ago.) I was hopping mad at Him. My sponsor had told me to pray about it. I did but did not like it. I chewed God out and told Him that I hated Him. (At the time I did.) God hugged me tighter and said "Thank you for your honesty." It wasn't an audible voice but I heard it none the same. My relationship with God changed that day. After all, He created humans for the purpose of having fellowship with Him and loving Him. How can you love somebody if you do not have a little knowledge of them? On the other hand, what God wants is impossible. God transcends human understanding and therefore is impossible to truly know. However, God in His glory did the impossible. He left heaven and took on human proportions in the man Jesus Christ. He did so to make it possible to know Him intimately and to love Him. Is it possible to know the God that transcends space and time? No. It is not. Is it possible to know Jesus Christ? Yes! I really don't know for sure. They had a big search party the next day and for about a week following. Still, whatever became of Tom is one of the world's many mysteries. There is still an open case file on him in the Missing Person's Department of the local police department. Rumor has it that Tom and the beautiful girl eloped, but nobody has any proof. She may not have even existed, though the constable suspects foul play. Maybe the bog swallowed him? |

It was all day and of course the Men's Club at church participated. We sold hot dogs. Altogether we raised a total of $572.00 to go toward building a perimeter fence. Next month we are doing a chili cookoff with men competing against women. I personally think the women will win that. We'll see. I know I had fun and got to serve the Lord at the same time. I knew a guy once who literally had a heart attack because a single dandelion was found in his yard. UI told him to dig it up and eat it. Dandelions also make a passable wine. This question threw me for a second. I was thinking of friendship with people as opposed to friendship with the "world". So some definitions might be in order. The word "world" here refers to "the flesh". It means worldliness and carnality. I was once extremely carnal. Looking back on it now I know that I was simply a babe in Christ and didn't know how to act differently. Now I've matured quite a bit. I still have moments when I fall prey to the flesh but not nearly as often. Jesus knows we are in the world and will be tempted. he does not expect us to be perfect, but He does expect progress. Sin is sin and sin destroys. When we sin we are expected to repent of it the moment we become aware of it. We will sin as long as we are in these clay pots. However, we have a choice today. The Holy Spirit dwells within us. If we are constantly cognizant of and obedient to Him we do not have to sin. Write about treasure today for your Blog entry. I love three minute, coffee table reads. In fact my book Teatime which is being published the end of this month is a collection of three-five minute coffee table reads. I always loved going to the attic and digging through the treasures hidden there. I was raised in a dirt-poor family who had no such attic, but there was an abandoned house up over the hill from me, in fact several houses, full of debris and I would go there during the winter and snoop. I dared not enter during the summer due to snakes, but in the winter I rummaged through it. I found a treasure trove of books there. In fact, the first time I read A Tale of Two Cities was from a book I found up there. It was always fun exploring those old houses. Write about camping in your Blog entry today. I always loved camping but am much to old for it now. The best hamburgers I ever ate were cooked at a campsite. It was raining but Mom fired up the grill and cooked. After all, she had nine hungry children! The hamburgers absorbed enough rain water that it made them moist. They were delicious! Poor Mom though.
