Shi Blogs Too: from out of the mountains where I live.

I will now be keeping a journal. This is something new for me. I have no idea what I am doing, just that I am diving in. This should be an interesting journey for me. Mainly because I consider myself to be a semi-private person. I live with my fiance and our two kitties, in what I have come to recognize as a small community in a somewhat remote area. Retirement has it's own life style and livelihood. Far away from the norm.

I'm feeling so much better today. I've been able to eat real meals again. Whatever it was that had me feeling so whoozy sure did a number on me. I think it was the bad cheese spreads .

Anyways I'm glad that's over with. Didn't get a whole lot done lately because of it. Today I just sort of took it easy. Ron and I played a few games of scrabble. Going to watch DVDs tonight.

We are spending Thanksgiving in Moses Lake again this year. His sister Patricia has invited us. His Mom and sister Ann and her hubby Rich also. It will be potluck.

I get to bring the pumpkin pie! So that they can stick candles in it for my birthday and sing happy birthday to me...it's falling on Thanksgiving this year! How about that. That's what my Mom used to tell me she was going to do for my birthday
when it fell on Thanksgiving when I was a little girl!

I am under the weather. I have been sick all afternoon and evening with what I think is food poisoning. I had bought a package of four different flavored cheesespreads, and I was trying them out. I noticed they tasted a bit on the 'old' side and began causing indigestion.

Well needless to say I spent most of the day flat on my back. I am now starting to get over the sick dizzy feeling.

I'm blogging late tonight. I should have done it hours ago...where does the time go anyways?

Well I know one thing my sales in my Sig Shoppe have soared! I have been busy working on the ones that I donated for Gardengirl's Raffle also. It surprise's me that my Holiday Collection is doing sooo great already! If that is an indication of what the Christmas rush will be like then I think I'll have a big smile on my face!*Bigsmile* I love making these signatures for all to enjoy.

Well, I should get off now and head for bed.

Our company has left to go back to Morongo Valley, California. We had a great time having them here! We had a lot to catch up on( Marsha & I) and did some gift exchanging. I think that I fared better in that department though! She came prepared with gifts for me galore. I had but a few days notice that she was coming, but did manage to give her a couple of items that she liked really well.

She brought me a beautiful jewelry armoire that had been her mother's. It was so very nice of her to gift it to me. What really blew me away though is the beautiful gem of a ring she gave me! Quite exquisite! I didn't know how to act. She is such a giving and wonderful friend.

We took them up into the mountains so they could see all the fall colors way up high. We also went out to eat a few times. What fun!

After they left for home we settled fback into our routine again. Yesterday we drove to Arlington to see Ron's twin granddaughters. They turned three years old on Saturday. What cuties they are. We really enjoyed seeing them and visiting them again. We took lots of pictures for it had been awhile since we did that. I am going to put one in here so you all can see the little beauties. This one I call "The Little Christmas Angels". You can see why!

A nice sunny day today inspired our window washing! What a job...huh? Sure is nice to look out pristine windows again. Before the day is done I am sweeping the decks too. I started my day with polishing floors. You might think I have company coming, and I do. My friend from California is supposed to arrive tomorrow. Right now she is in Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle for her diabetes. She is being evaluated and whatever else they do there to help her control her disease.

Sure will be good to see her again. I just hope she is feeling okay.

I've been working on my innovative Holiday Signatures. They are turning out okay. I'm sure I will be creating more when all the festive decorations are out there, because I use my own photos.

Well I better get off of here and get at the deck sweeping. It's not going to get done this way for sure.

Today found me dealing with lots of sore muscles from all the yard work. I have to say that it was worth it. Looks like we got the raking done just in time because today was a rainy day.

My daughter called with good news. She passed her job interview with impressive results. I'm happy for her as she is climbing the ladder of success. When she gets hired I will relate more on that.

Today I wrote another poem for the Turnberry Street Campfire. My turn is coming up after Kansaspoet's. I want to be ready in a timely manner. I think my poem is a good one for this campfire.

We've got company coming up from California real soon. An old friend of mine will be staying in her motorhome here for a couple of days. I look forward to her visit as I haven't seen her in about two years or so. We have been best friends for 30 years now! She is a few years younger than I am. She never had any children and always enjoyed being around mine when they were younger. She even loaded us all into her panel truck onetime and we headed for Canada. Spent the entire day and came back late that night. My kids still remember that trip to this day.

What started out as leaf raking day turned into an all day yard cleaning! Boy, did we work hard or what? We have six Maple trees in our front yard. We haven't even counted all of them in the back yard. They are dropping some of the biggest leaves I have ever seen!

I swear one out on the back deck had to have been 15 inches across! Those are just the Maples. There are the Birch trees out there dropping all of their leaves too!

We had a system going that worked pretty good. We both raked leaves and dumped them on a big blue tarp. Then Ron would tie it up when it was full and haul it behind the riding lawn mower to a spot behind the garage for dumping. Now that worked just fine ....until got tired of raking.

Then I shifted my attention to the rose bed out front. I trimmed back rosebushes and cleaned out the whole bed. Then hauled my mess over to the tarp and dumped it.

I couldn't stop there tho. I had my motor running. I began trimming and cleaning out the whole area of foliage that runs along the length of the front deck. There are a few huge messy ferns in there mixed with the Rhodie and some other shrubs that needed my attention. By the time I worked my way down to the Azalea's and the Honeysuckle the sweat was pouring off of my forehead.

Time to quit and rest. So I finally gave it up. Came inside and started a pork chop and dressing dinner. See, I know that when Ron finished up out there after a full days work...he was gonna need something that stuck to his ribs!

Pork chop gravy would do the trick. Umm hummm.

I would like to say that my visit to see my kids was wonderful. It usually is, however within an hour of my arrival to Port Orchard I was bitten by a dog! I was leaving a friends house and her dog bit me from behind on the calf of my leg! I never saw it coming. Boy was it painful. My friend felt soooo bad. Seems she has only had the dog for a year and now she will get rid of it.

So I spent over an hour at Urgent Care on Saturday. I had to get a booster Tetnus shot. Then I was written a prescription for some strong antibiotics. The bite itself was pretty much superficial thank goodness. However, it did break my skin and cause bleeding, swelling and bruising. Inspite of it all, I did have a good time with all my kids & the grandchildren.

I was able to take two of my grandson's to Walmart and buy them their birthday gifts. They are turning nine and eleven. One wanted transformers the other a skateboard game. I also lavished them with Transformer fleece throws for their TV watching. They were very grateful and remembered to thank Grandma.

I think that visit made me feel pretty good even if I did get bit by a dog!!!

I'm leaving this afternoon for a weekend with my kids. I probably won't be online so I'll leave you with these thoughts for today:

Today I made a big batch of oatmeal & raisin cookies. That way Ron will have cookie snacks when I'm gone all weekend. I doubt there will be any left when I get back home on Sunday.

I made another collection of Innovative Sigs . It's called Shi's Innovative Treasure Collection. You can see them here-

Let me know what you think. I would love feedback on them.

My Sigs are selling great in the main Shoppe. Hey, even Highwind bought one last night!*Bigsmile* They are so much fun to make.

We are supposed to have a big wind storm tomorrow. Ugh...hope the power doesn't go off. We'll see about that I guess. As long as it doesn't blow on Friday!

My kids are calling me. They are getting excited to see me I think. That's kinda neat....there is a plus to living so far away from them!!!

Looks like they finally fixed our phone line out here. Hope it stays that way. My kids get frustrated when they can't get a hold of me.

I'm so looking forward to going down to see all of them on Friday. That means I won't be online or on the site here till I get back home on Sunday. I don't think my son Patrick has a computer. My daughter does though so I may be able to use hers while I'm down there.

My Innovative Sig Shoppe is doing great! That makes my real happy. I just donated a few Sigs to Gardengirl's raffle she has in the making. I am pleased that she asked me to donate.

Today I'm doing laundry and getting things ready for the weekend for Ron. We are having steak and mushrooms today with a fruit salad.

Today my blog will be just some facts of life that may interest you. If some of you respond I may continue with a blog of similar interest now and then.

Facts of Life
~~~~~~~~~
Facts Of Life In The 1500s
Next time you are washing your hands and complain because the
water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how
things used to be.......in the "good old days"!
Here are some facts about life in the 1500s:
1) Most people got married in June because they took their
yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good by June.
However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a
bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor.
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of
the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all
the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children-
last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you
could actually lose someone in it - hence the saying,
"Don't throw the baby out with the bath water."
2) Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw, piled high, with no
wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm,
so all the dogs, cats and other small animals (mice rats, and
bugs), lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and
sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof-hence the
saying "It's raining cats and dogs."
3) There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house.
This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other
droppings could really mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a
bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some
protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.
4) The floor was dirt.
Only the wealthy had something other than dirt, hence the saying
"dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get
slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh on the
floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they
kept adding more thresh until when you opened the door it would
all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the
entry way-hence, a "thresh hold."
5) They cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung
over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to
the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat.
They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot
to get cold overnight and then start over the next day.
Sometimes the stew had food in it that had been there for quite
a while-hence the rhyme, "peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold,
peas porridge in the pot nine days old."
6) Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite
special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their
bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man "could
bring home the bacon."
They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all
sit around and "chew the fat."
7) Those with money had plates made of pewter.
Food with a high acid content caused some of the lead to leach
onto the food, causing lead poisoning and death. This happened
most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so,
tomatoes were considered poisonous.
8) Most people did not have pewter plates, but had trenchers, a
piece of wood with the middle scooped out like a bowl. Often
trenchers were made from stale paysan bread which was so old and
hard that they could use them for quite some time. Trenchers
were never washed and a lot of times worms and mold got into the
wood and old bread. After eating off wormy moldy
trenchers, one would get "trench mouth."
9) Bread was divided according to status.
Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the
middle, and guests got the top, or "upper crust."
10) Lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey.
The combination would some times knock them out for a couple of
days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead
and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen
table for a couple of days and the family would gather around
and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up-hence
the custom of holding a "wake."
11) England is old and small and they started out running out of
places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would
take the bones to a "bone-house" and reuse the grave. When
reopening these coffins, one out of 25 coffins were found to
have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been
burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string
on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up
through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to
sit out in the graveyard all night (the "graveyard shift") to
listen for the bell; thus, someone could be "saved by the bell"
or was considered a "dead ringer."
What a lazy day today has been for me. Ron went riding with his buddies. I stayed home and did practically nothing, but change the bedding on our bed. From the sheets to the duvet cover, putting a warmer one on for colder nights here.
Aside from that really nothing much else was going on around here. My son Patrick tried to call me all morning, but all he got was a busy signal. I was not on the phone either. We have a phone line on the blink again. The phone company came out about a week ago and replaced the box out at the side of the house. Problem fixed..or so we thought. Now this. So tomorrow we have to call the phone company again.
Patrick invited me to come and stay with him and his kids this Friday evening through Sunday. I think I'm going to. I miss all of my kids and grandkids down in Port Orchard like crazy! So I will take the Edmonds to Kingston ferry on Friday evening and then we will all meet at a restaurant for dinner(my treat), and catch up on the latest. I can hardly wait. It's always so much fun and laughter when we get together like that.*Laugh* I will stay untill Sunday when he takes me back to the Kingston ferry.
Got my haircut and styled today in Concrete. It's nice to be able to finally trust a new beautician that is close to home. Driving all the way to Mount Vernon for a haircut is a bit outrageous! Well, now that Marianne has opened her shop in Concrete, I can get my hair cut here. She does a good job even if she does charge a few dollars more.
We rode the Vulcan to Newhalem today. That is up near the North Cascade Pass. It was a wonderful sunny and warm day. Fall was showing off her brilliant color along the river and up into mountain country. We were really pleased with the bright yellows, oranges, and the vivid reds. Eye-popping splashing beauty all around us. Had we been thinking ahead we would have brought our cameras. It was a spur of the moment ride, however, and we suited up in a hurry.
We stopped on our way back home for some homemade icecream on a waffle cone. That just topped off our day completely.
We had to make another trip into town today. Seems we forgot to stock up on our kitty food! You know that is somethin' you cannot ignore. Not in this house anyways! Bentley would chew us out all the way from the bedroom to the kitchen and maybe even further! He is our little Russian Blue. Actually he is not little any longer. We got him as a small kitten right after Halloween last year.
So while we were in Burlington we stopped off at the big new Sportsman'sWarehouse. What a great place to shop! Ron found a nice longsleeved heavy shirt for winter, and I found me a new Colombia fleece to wear under my leather jacket. We both came away smiling. Probably because the price was right for both. Only $29 each. That's a good deal for this area.
Well, I've been having fun reading all the entries in my new Halloween IN and OUT.
some are pretty hilarious!
Today it was a balmy 72 degrees here! It seems the big storm out off the coast brought some warm air ahead of the front. We of course warmed up here by the mountains.
Ron mowed the lawn. I cleaned the house. Starting with one of the bathrooms. By the time I got all done cleaning everything looked spotless. We still have windows to do again before winter comes though. We'll have to pick another nice day for those.
My son Matt called me this morning. He is under stress from his separation and his dr. had to put him on some meds to control his blood pressure. I sure hope things settle down for him. He has always been such a laid back guy. I hate to see him suffer from stress like this. He is the youngest of all of my children. Just a really sweet guy too! I just want him to be happy. He so deserves it.
We did not get our walk in today. Ron is napping now, and it is going to be dark soon so doesn't look like a walk is in the making. Perhaps tomorrow we'll walk.
Whoa where is everybody anyways? I don't think I've ever seen this site so slow as of lately! Of course that's just my opinion.
Today was a dry sunny day. We went into town to do some shopping. Stocked up on our supplies again at Costco. Costco is one of my very favorite places to shop. It's just this huge warehouse filled with everything you can imagine. Electronics, furniture, clothing, groceries...and a whole lot else to pick from. You can even eat in there! I call it- a go nuts store. Just a real fun place to shop.
Well, I think I've babbled enough for tonight. Guess I'll get off of here and go dig out some fall decor to decorate this house with.
I've been a little under the weather for a few days. Today is a better day though. I'm starting to feel more like myself again. Most of those muscle aches are gone. My energy level is still low, however. I suppose that just goes along with whatever bug I had picked up.
We got snow up on Sauk Mountain and boy is it ever pretty! It came earlier than last year. Does this mean we will have a colder winter I wonder? Ron says the snow level will continue to drop and the snow that's there will melt. But, for now it is a sight to behold. We've had quite a lot of rain here for the last several days. When it was raining here it was snowing up in the mountains.
Yesterday was a sunny 60 degree day out. We rode the Vulcan to Anacortes to our favorite hangout. Had our favorite burger and fries there. It felt good to get out of the house again.
