ljkam just wrote in her blog ("Invalid Item" ): Isn't there a law against getting out of bed at five am on a Sunday? There should be. I mostly have to agree with her. I went to bed too early last night and woke up at 4am this Sunday morning. At least I got enough sleep. Plus, I'm up early enough to see the sunrise! According to https://www.sunrisesunset.com, my local sunrise is 7:14am. I have another hour. There really isn't a great place to see the sunrise in town, though. I've seen two sunrises before. (I'm sure I've seen a few from inside a car - I didn't have a curfew when I turned 18 - but those don't quite count) I've seen two that I purposely got up early for, that I stared at in amazement. So, I think I'll go watch my third this morning. There are mountains all around me, and I'm in the middle of a town, so I'm not sure how wonderful it's going to be. Still, I'm sure it will be lovely. Good morning! |
I wasn't planning on doing NaNo this year. I really don't think I'll have the time. Then I found out who's doing the pep-talks this year. You see, when you're signed up for NaNo, you get periodic pep-talks, usually from Chris Baty, the guy behind NaNo. This year, though, they got some guests to do it, well-known writers: Julianna Baggott Neil Gaiman Sue Grafton Sara Gruen Garth Nix Naomi Novik Deanna Raybourn Tom Robbins Two of those are some of my very favorite writers, in my top five. Hell, in my top three. I'm so excited! So I've decided to try doing NaNo this year. Honestly, I'll be very surprised if I finish. My idea is the same one Traci and I had over the summer: A woman writing in a diary. It's going to be called, 'I'm Not Crazy" or something like that. The woman's shrink makes her write in a diary, which she doesn't want to do. She doesn't think she has any problems. She makes up most of the stories in her diary, though by the end, it becomes apparent that she does, in fact, have some serious issues. If you're doing NaNo, too, tell me your name on the site, so we can be writing buddies. I know there's a Writing.com group there, too: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/1001078 And I think I might get this to help since I have absolutely no real plan for this novel:
Hey, there's no harm in attempting NaNo, right? Who's with me? |
Do you believe in coincidences? I had a conversation with my husband this afternoon about immortality. I said to him, "I could be immortal. How would I know it? I can only know for sure that I'm not when I die." Just a few minutes ago, I picked up a poetry book I haven't looked at in years. Looking through the table of contents, the word "Cobra" caught my eye. While turning to that page, I stopped on another page that had an interesting picture. Above it were these words: "If we were immortal, we wouldn't know it." Things like this happen to me all the time. I think the Universe is speaking to me or something.... (On a side note, Cobra was a literary & artistic movement in Europe in the 1940s. Like Dadaism, cobra artists turned away from the popular culture. The quote above comes from a piece called, "Logogramme" by Christian Dotremont.) |
Yes, dieting sucks. I use sparkpeople.com to track my calories and exercise. I've been on a kick of having way too many calories and fats lately. Then I have days like today where after lunch I've only had 400 calories. That's insane! Thankfully, I plan on having a Philly cheesesteak for dinner. For once, I'm hoping something's nearly 1,000 calories. Do me a favor if you're on your computer for a bit today and can listen to an internet radio station. Listen to AOL radio (http://radio.aol.com), a station called "New Rock First" (you can find it under the Alternative stations once the player is opened). If they play a song by The Drama Club, rate it really high. I'll love you forever if you do! Damn, I'm out of floss. Don't you hate it when that happens? |
I'm calling it now - City Sleeps is going to be huge! They're on Trustkill Records, and I found them on Yahoo Launch recently. I first saw them a few years ago, and I've somehow managed to see them three times since then despite the fact that they're from Georgia. https://www.myspace.com/citysleeps When trying to decide which of their myspace songs is my favorite, I always go back and forth between "Sleep with Me," and "Not an Angel." They remind me of The Killers just a little, but I really think it's their lead singer. He has great charisma on stage seemingly without effort, just like Brandon Flowers. I've been waiting patiently for their new album to come out, and I think the latest date is October 9th. In other news, we got a great compliment from our current featured band, The Reagan Eighties (please check them out at https://www.myspace.com/reaganeighties). We had sent them interview questions, and though they had been a little too busy to answer and send them back, I wrote an article about them anyway. They were amazed at how well I understood what they were all about. (This isn't the first time a band has said this and it makes me happy every time) I listened to their album a ton of times (and I still am), and I read everything I could find on them (which wasn't much). (Totally unrelated - there are a ton of sirens and stuff going off in town right now! I wonder what's going on) Anyway, RE wants to work with us in the future, and I'm excited about working with them. There's talk of a benefit show coming up, a subscription to our magazine so we can mail to our readers, and working with one of our very favorite local bands. Hooray! |
A funny thing happened this morning. I don't think I explained in this blog my ordeal with trying to get the internet set up. Basically, I ordered DSL through Verizon on Aug. 23rd. They told me the ready date would be Aug. 31st. On the 31st, I moved into my new place, and late in the day I tried to hook up the computer. It wouldn't work, so the next day, I called Verizon. They had no record of my order, and I had to talk to the Sales department which wouldn't be open until Tuesday (after Labor Day weekend). So I called on Tuesday, and they confirmed that they had no record of me at all. I ordered again and they told me the earliest it could be ready was Friday. Wednesday morning I got a message saying it wouldn't be ready until the following Monday. I called them and complained but there wasn't anything they could do. (They were going to give me free temporary dial-up, but halfway through the call, I got disconnected and I was too mad to call back right away) Anyway, Thursday morning I got a call saying my DSL order was ready. I connected to the internet. So it shouldn't surprise me when I get an email this morning saying, "I'm sorry but we were unable to hook up your DSL order to the phone line ending in 3960." Problem is, that's not my number. I don't know what's going on at Verizon, and I'm pretty sure they don't, either. |
A week without the internet can feel like forever! I feel like I missed so much! I missed WDC's birthday (though it looks like there are still plenty of places to celebrate), my writing workshop, and my review forum. Of course now that I'm back online, I have a bad cold and I don't have the energy to do much. Oh well. I'm happy to be back. It's a little crazy how much I rely on the internet... |
We're finally moving today!!!!!!!!!! I had anxiety dreams last night, and my stomach hurts this morning. Weird. I don't feel nervous... I really don't know when we're moving today, but we're definitely moving! Yay! And I've got a really great show tonight! And we were invited to a show tomorrow night by a local band. And Mr. J has Sunday night off! Long weekend! Woo-hoo!! TGIF! |
a conversation from yesterday: Mr. J: This week is going so slow! me: Well, it's already Tuesday. Mr. J: It's Monday. me: Oh. This week is going so slow! I'm going to try to work on WOM stuff today, as the new issue goes up Saturday. I really don't have a lot to do yet, so it shouldn't take long. Then it's back to unpacking and cleaning over at the new house. |
