You know what I'm tired of hearing from bands? "We need shows!!" or "Hey, book us some shows!!" They not only ask this of me (which is almost understandable. we're not a booking agent, but sort of similar in nature), but they ask this of their fans! Hey bands, book your own damn shows! Seriously, booking agents make money from booking shows, fans don't. They don't even get on the guest list half the time. Bands sometimes expect their fans to do all their booking, promotion, etc., and what do they give in return? /rant Sorry. Not all bands are like that! And in some ways, it makes sense. I've seen bands from other states who are trying to book tours ask people in other states to contact local venues to see if they could help book their shows. In that case, fans know where venues are, and bands might not. I just wonder how often that plea works. So, it looks like I'll be busy on September 8th. There's a teen battle of the bands (which I've dubbed "Battle at the Defender!"), with two bands signed up so far. The prizes for the winning band? (as printed on their flyer) 3 Hours recording session at C&C Recording Studio $50 Gift Certificate from Johnny Moratto's Music Tuner & Guitar Strings from Fulton's Music Cover feature in Word of Mouth Magazine Yay! The people hosting the event were very happy they could get such great prizes. I'm excited to see who wins! An article will also run in the local newspaper, so that's also free advertising for our magazine! |
See the new cover? Isn't it spiffy? Babylonia is ecstatic to be on our cover this month! It makes me very happy that we chose them. The first of the month is nearly always the same - about 2-3 hours of rushed work (uploading the new site, switching stuff around, updating myspace, etc.), and then I get this huge feeling of relief and relaxation. Another month's issue was published successfully! Of course, now we're working on the in-print version... Tomorrow I'll be going to talk to a woman who is running a Battle of the Bands competition. We'll be featuring the winning band on October's cover. We also had a reply from a band today that will probably be September's cover. I'm so happy to be ahead! |
I figured out whch band to feature starting tomorrow, and I'm happy with my decision. (Visit www.wordofmouthpa.com tomorrow to find out who the feature band for August is!) wendopolis, you might like them... I also found another coffeemaker, so that problem was also fixed. FIL had some Starbucks coffee that he was saving and suggested we share it, so we did. Mmmmmm! I miss good coffee! Ah, it's nice when your problems get solved, isn't it? |
I have one more day to get the new issue ready, and the coffeemaker just stopped working! The "ON" light is coming on, but it's not doing anything! What am I going to do??? Question of the day: What stimulants/motivations do you use to get your work done? |
I'm sure I've talked about these before, but we have a youtube account of videos we've taped from live shows. https://www.youtube.com/wordofmouthpa We added two from this past weekend. Man From Outer Space - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9JIpM3C_Fs This is an incredible song to hear live! It's a little Pink Floyd-esque (and they even throw in a few lines from a Floyd song in the middle), but it's just explosive and insane live! It transfixes everyone in the room. Company for the Lonely - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2Tf2OrCM0I The title track from the upcoming (and highly anticpated) CD from TDC. It's their "ballad," they say, a song about how we all need friends. As I wrote in my journal, the singer looks at my camera as he sings, "We made it this far, you know who you are" at 2:15. The sound quality isn't the best, because when you're standing in the spot where it's the loudest, it's going to come out muffled on the video. It's a great way for me to remember how much fun I have at live shows, though. I worked for most of the day today on the new issue, which will be out in two days. We have a mini-crisis going on, but it happens all the time. It'll be fine. |
I managed 15 reviews this weekend! That's a lot considering my reviews can take up to an hour to write, and I had a busy weekend. Not much "work" done, though, especially considering our interview plans fell through. Sometimes I don't like dealing with managers of bands. They can be so busy that they ignore interview requests that can really help bands. (Generally when parents are managers of bands, they're awesome, though!) We were depending on this interview, so I'm not sure what we're going to do, especially when the new issue will be out in about two days. Oh well. We've been in worse situations. Back to work tomorrow. For now, HP7 is calling my name! G'night! |
My weekends really start on Friday, since my husband works 3rd shift and his last night of the week is Thursday night. I tend to not get much done on Fridays. I'm once again attempting the impossible. I'm trying to write a sonnet. I promised Mitch forever ago that I'd enter his contest, "SHAKESPEAREAN SONNET CONTEST: Closed " [E], and I've tried to write a sonnet at least three times recently. It's just so hard for me! I just spent 10 minutes writing one line, and then I remembered I'm going to have to rhyme the last word, so I had to change it. That's what happens - I work really hard writing a few lines (the strict meter kills me!), and then I have to delete them anyway because I can't seem to write lines to go with it! It's so frustrating! But I bet it will feel awesome once I have a sonnet written! I'm also working on a review for a novel. I've only read and written my review for the Prologue and it's already over 4,000 characters, so it's likely going to be the biggest review I've ever written! Ooh, and I did the best Madlib ever yesterday!! It's actually created by the same author whose contest I entered yesterday! Here is the Madlib:
...and I don't know what's been going on around here lately, but people must be going crazy or something! I'm staying out of it. I'm not taking sides, and I'm not commenting (other than this comment, I guess). I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! |
I'm about out of steam, and Mr. J will be getting up fairly soon. Let's see how I did with my checklist. WDC - Add entries to "Literary Devices" WDC - Add questions to "Horror Trivia Challenge" WDC - Review for "Review Rowan and be Rewarded" WDC - Add rules to forum for "Great Minds Writing Workshop" WDC - Email "Great Minds Writing Workshop" group members WOM - Update venues WOM - Update cities list WOM - Work on August Issue WOM - Add September shows WOM - Figure out how to make a watermark WOM - Email venues WOM - Research shows Not too bad! And I even wrote a (very) short story today for a cool contest I found. In the contest, the host chooses a letter. That letter must be in every single word of your entry! It's harder than it sounds (and it sounds hard)! Here is the contest:
And this was my entry:
I tell ya, there are some creative and inspiring contests on this site! |
Look at this! ** Image ID #1265210 Unavailable ** I was caught! It won't be until August, but take a look at the group if you get a chance. I love what they do!
On today's agenda are a lot of things, as always. Here's my to-do list: (maybe tomorrow I'll take a look at how many I actually did) WDC - Add entries to "Invalid Item" WDC - Add questions to "Horror Trivia Challenge" WDC - Review for "Invalid Item" WDC - Add rules to forum for "Invalid Item" WDC - Email "Invalid Item" group members WOM - Update venues WOM - Update cities list WOM - Work on August Issue WOM - Add September shows WOM - Figure out how to make a watermark WOM - Email venues WOM - Research shows ...and I think that's it. This is how each day begins for me. I need a to-do list or I'll forget everything I wanted to do, particularly because everything I do is online and with the computer. I'll get distracted by news, games, emailing, etc., so easily that I need a list to keep me on track. I don't have to complete everything on my lists every day, but I try to get as much done as I can. Do you work better with lists or without them? |
I need music to work. I've noticed that sometimes when I'm working, I'll start losing my temper, feeling irritable, and suddenly I'll realize I don't have any music playing. Once I get some music on, I have lots more patience. I like listening to internet radio because it gives me a range of music, some new, some I love, etc. I have been using Yahoo Launch, but it has bugs. It stops working or won't give me song info, and I get irritated again. I've tried a few others (including last.fm which Wendopolis really enjoys), but the one I'm hooked on at the moment is live365.com. AL mentioned it the other day, and I forgot that I had an account with them. The only thing that sucks is that you have to figure out what genre you like to get the songs you'd like. Can you pick one genre? Do you know what to call the music you like? Genres change so often, and the meanings of the genres change all the time. (Emo isn't what it used to be, neither is alternative, etc.) I like Brit-Pop, but when I browse stations for it, I get stations that play the Beatles. Today I tried a station called "DMPulse," and it's great! So far today it's played Bright Eyes, The Fratellis, Bravery, Tegan & Sara, and a few others. I also like Modern Rock stations, though I'm not a big fan of Creed-sounding bands. *shudders* Do you need music while you work? What kind of music? Do you prefer new bands or ones you already know? |
