Pearl

Buried treasure
for the lady’s pleasure,
when the oyster bit
on a piece of grit,
and chewed the fat
till it looked like that,
a pearl to reap
from the rolling deep.

A Culinary Disaster

The chef is so busy,
he’s all in a tizzy,
he’s had a request
for the soup he makes best,
the one made from humour
(or so runs the rumour)
but he’s looked in the crock
and there’s no laughing stock.

Spoons containing various coloured spices.

A Culinary Skill

Just a spoonful of spice
is ever so nice,
if taken with rice,
or scattered on ice
by hard-working mice,
perhaps once or twice,
at a pinch, even thrice -
if more, it’s a vice.

Friday

Drenched by drizzle,
the silvered streets
reflect the dull and dismal sky;
attendant atmosphere,
garnished with gloom,
gives backdrop sad and grey;
such soft syncopation
sings a song of Saturday.

Prompt: Write a gray poem.

Requiem for Reality

O brave new world,
this dream of former ages,
from the first dream unfurled,
words writ on other pages,
sentences from ancient wiles,
designed for wishes fled,
in long forgotten styles,
now flourishing but dead.

For Express It In Eight, 10.26.23
Prompt: A dream within a dream.

Secret

Yes, I know a secret,
but I cannot tell -
I learned it from an egret
and swore I would not yell
the news of it abroad,
though it squirms inside of me,
I cannot breathe a word,
I’ve forgotten it, you see.

Christmas Wrapping

When winter hones the wind to keenest edge,
and creeps upon my skin with sharp intent,
seeps inside my bones to steal resistance,
shivers sensibilities to sealed surrender,
then wrap me in the closest clothes and cloth,
roll me in the fattest folds of furry blanket,
fill my soul with soothing steaming sauces,
and present me tied with central-heated bow.

Ditch

You’re in the army now
you’re not behind the plow
you’ll never get rich
by digging a ditch
you’re in the army now.

Isham Jones 1917

You may have abandoned the ditch,
but here’s the saddening hitch,
you’ll still be digging deep -
enough to make you weep;
take heed of the date up there,
‘twas a year that you may be aware,
must have come as a terrible wrench
that the ditch had become a trench.

Location

It’s not what you do but where you do it that matters,
get that wrong and your reputation’s in tatters;
we consider roadside billboards as desecration,
replacement of vista with picture, adulteration,
the neon sign and flashing lights are too glitzy,
but in their place they can make things seem ritzy,
and the posters of Mucha and Lautrec are a treasure,
works of art both fine and priced beyond measure.

Prompt: The Highway Beautification Act.
Note: Google Alphonse Mucha and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec.

Spiral fire escape against red wall.

Egress

Whirlygig, twirlygig,
drill bit, screw fit,
spiral stair, winding scare,
higher rate, fire escape,
round and round, toward the ground,
rotational, gyrational,
descending, unending,
red wall, shadows tall.
