Directions

Go straight on here for a mile,
get into the field by a stile,
on through the wheat to the trees,
on your left are the hives of the bees,
past the wood there’s the church tower,
its bell will toll for the hour,
follow the river downstream,
and by then you should wake from this dream.

Unlikely Distillation

It was not to my utter devastation
to learn that I have no inclination
for such rare matters as meditation
and far-fetched possibility of levitation.

In fact, the damage to my reputation
is likely to end in severe perspiration
and, to my complete consternation,
the need for a sudden evacuation.

Excuses

So sorry I’m late -
I know I said eight,
but you know how it is,
one gets buried in biz,
I lost my car keys,
and my hat in the breeze,
but I’ve made it at last,
please forgive me the past.

Only Sleeping

Please, don't wake me
No, don't shake me
Leave me where I am
I'm only sleeping

John Lennon/Paul McCartney

Don’t honk if I look sleepy,
I know it may seem creepy,
but much depends on why
I let the world pass by,
and if I’d rather slumber,
my senses unencumbered,
reality has proved so vile,
and dreams are more my style.

Down

Underneath the churning waves of ocean,
below the currents of the surface,
down in gloomy regions of its dark depths,
lies the peace of aeons undisturbed.

Across the faces of our multitudes uncounted,
in the eyes of a million passers by,
and the endless chatter of our teeming thoughts,
underneath is silence of the ages.

Duty Free

The duty free shop,
airport field of dreams,
where responsibility stops
amid fantastic schemes,
and alcohol, the fuel for fools,
confuses all the facts,
makes nonsense of the rules,
dispensing with the tax.

Chocolates

Creme tangerine and Montelimar
A ginger sling with a pineapple heart
Coffee dessert…

Savoy Truffle, George Harrison

Soft hearted I may be
but never hard and nutty,
I can be chewy too,
in summer I’ll be goo.

Praline, cream, and truffle,
whatever’s in the shuffle -
don’t lose the printed card,
or end up with the hard.

Snail

Sail on silvered soil,
your slow and silent spoor,
set your snail’s senses,
sequestered in your shell.

Spirals in your hallway,
spiral too your stair,
spiralled to your core,
and spiral is your home.

Glug

The glass stands ready
tall and straight
the hand is steady
upon the weight
of the bottle right
and tipped to yen
then the voice so bright
says, “Just say when!”

Sunrise

And come the morn, it’s one more dawn that greets our opened eyes,
as flees the night, the sun so bright in glory it doth rise
into the east where colours feast in broadly painted skies,
and songs of birds that need no words release their joyous cries.

The day doth find our dreaming minds to wakefulness arise,
the shadowed mist, not sorely missed, in readiness applies
the daily chore and studied lore our routine now comprise,
the endless round, familiar ground, on which all life now flies.
