Alphabet Minuet

Mind over matter, I’ve heard it said,
Never will happen until we are dead,
Over the ages we seek magic power,
Proposing to build a new Babel tower,
Quick and predicted our subsequent fall,
Rapid and ruinous, down will come all,
Such are the wages of rampant ambition,
The dreams of us mortals in final collision.

Made with WHAT?

The lesson here,
to the mind that’s freer,
is that it doesn’t matter
if assumptions shatter;
what makes the thing
has got no sting
if the result is art -
the important part.

Painting of a man holding a representation of atoms.

Alfred

Alfred, stop playing with my pearls!
You’ll break the string.
They were given to me by my mother,
an inheritance sort of a thing.
And don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing,
your intentions to me are apparent -
you’re just trying to get me going.
Oh Alfred, you’re really transparent.

A Solitary Thought

If we should get our just deserts
for dryness to the rafter,
rather it should be desserts
as punishment comes after.

And if dessert is sweet reward
for eating all our greens,
we’re all agreed and of accord
with justice done and seen.

A family walking in a winter park.

Nocturne 2

Winter walk at evening,
fam’ly in the snow,
couple, child, and happy dog,
through the park they go.

Up upon the hillside,
the houses twinkle bright,
golden glow in gloaming,
preparing for the night.

For He Who Would A-Wooing Go

Stars and moonlight serenade,
peach and cherry lemonade,
chocolate squares and peppermint,
a classic book that’s out of print,
orchid sprays and roses too,
gallant deeds and derring-do,
which of these will win her heart?
Best find out before you start.

Christmas

Alcohol and candy,
turkey, sprouts, and brandy
reindeer antler headgear,
snow and prices dear,
choc-o-late and gifts,
cards and fam’ly tiffs,
Santa down the chimney,
the meaning grasped, but dimly.

Prisons

Papillon the Butterfly,
if held in Alcatraz,
would never flutter to the sky,
or Sing Sing all that jazz.

Never held in Leavenworth,
Capone he could not fly,
and Attica would be the fourth
of prisons we could try.

An old Yale-type lock on weathered surface.

The Lock

The lock presents itself,
like an eye weeping
bitter, midnight tears,
streaming down a mottled skin
bloodstained with defence,
and offers, enigmatic,
in archèd brow,
a choice of gee or zee.

Prediction

Had a look into the future
seemed it had a need of suture
it was so very broken.

If you would see what has to be
be certain it’s not caused by me
and truer words aren’t spoken.

Sometimes tomorrow
means only sorrow.
