Maybe Ash gets the tank in one of these scenarios. In these, Ash actually ages. He's 18 in the first two, and 14 in choice four.
1. After Aim to be a Pokémon Master, Ash finds out from Professor Oak about problems with a group that is similar to Team Rocket and with strangely aggressive Pokémon in a region called Orre, so he goes there to help out. Due to the wild Pokémon situation, Ash takes a full team, and leaves on Charizard. He finds the tank after getting to Orre.
When he goes to help out, he comes across Wes's bike in the desert, with Wes gravely injured due to the bombing of Snagum's base going wrong. Wes explains his suspicions about Team Snagum being involved in the aggressive Pokémon, and makes Ash promise to stop them, then gives him the Snag Machine. He then goes the plot of Pokémon Colosseum.
2. Similar to one, but for Pokémon XD, and Professor Oak mentions Cipher and Shadow Pokémon, and that Professor Krane had been kidnapped a couple of hours ago (Michael got a broken arm due to Chobin's paranoia), and are requesting an experienced trainer come to help them. Ash volunteers, and takes off on Charizard. Finding the tank in the Orre desert.
3. Ash winds up back in time during the events of Pokémon Conquest.
4. Towards the end of their travels where Ash challenged the Battle Frontier, May is acting odd, and Max comments on it, and she says she hasn't been feeling quite like herself lately. Ash stumbles across her alone as she's getting changing, and sees her ogling her own bare chest. He questions it.
After getting changed, she reveals that, ever since the Tree of Life incident, she's been seeing his memories from his perspective as she sleeps, and has started feeling less and less like herself, and more and more like Ash in May's body, feeling no attraction to boys other than Ash (and feeling grossed out when thinking of her previous feelings towards Drew), and admiring the feminine form.
They end up sent back in time. Ash finds the tank, and decides to use it. Since May's already Ash mentally, he doesn't use it on her. He ends up using it on at least Akari, Irida, and Arezu. Upon Irida, May suddenly starts seeing her memories. He leaves a Shadow Clone wearing a suit of himself in the past, and takes copies of the girls' suits with him. Upon getting back, any girls he had clones wearing suits of with modern day female counterparts start going through seeing Ash's memories in their dreams, along with their ancestors' memories from after Ash wore them, because of a side effect of his aura passing their souls down to when he exists in modern day. Both May and Serena are descendants of Irida, the Ash soul in her having split.
