In my view, the primary focus should be on encouraging the writers to write. I do not review items I don't enjoy anymore because I see it as a waste of my time. So, if you get a review from me, I enjoyed reading your work. The amazing thing about this whole process is that reading an inspiring review usually leads to me reading more of a reviewer's work also. So, it's a win-win.
I'm good at...
encouraging others to write because I love to read.
I will not review...
something I do not like. I do not enjoy writing hyper-critical reviews. I do NOT believe that "honesty" is a synonym for "mean." If I see someone being "mean" here on the public reviewing page, in group behaviors, or just acting as a bully I will not send them my reviews. The only exception to that would be judging a site contest - there all items get honest (and hopefully diplomatic) reviews of the work from me with no exceptions.

Review of Eleutheria

I clicked on the Read and Review option and it took me to your fine poem.

I wasn't sure about the title - I looked up Eleutheria and it indicated that it is a jellyfish. I figure there is something I am missing. You might consider explaining the title a bit at the end so that your readers (like me) understand better.

This, to me, is about admiring those who soar and rise above in flight from a position on the ground.

This was my favorite part as it goes to imagination and daring to try:

"And we were soaring forward and I was weightless,
And in that moment, I realised that I don’t need
Wings to fly."

Very inspirational!

This is a lovely image for me from Lizco252!

What brought Hoovsie meandering in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* You sent me a nice review recently so here I am.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* This fine poem is about how real life is quite different than what we were fed (via fairy tales) in our youthful hazes. Sometimes, you have to admit when something isn't working and just move along, but it is hard to let go of the dream. In most cases the dream had little to do with the reality of day to day living.

It reminded me of an Eagles song about a breakup, with lawyers working out the details when happily ever after fails and when Daddy had to fly. I like how the title ties into the spirit of that song without restating it.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"The past will recede with a final good-bye
like traces of winter melt in the springtime."

This reminds me of something my daughter once said about forgetting about the pain of childbirth in order to have another baby. She said that enough time would have to go by for her to forget and then she would see whether it would happen then or not. It did.

Very wise. It is good to balance practicality with a tough of fairy tale faith though. I believe that, too. Time is the great healer, isn't it? The seasons come and go and then we wonder what the heck we were thinking at the time. That is the benefit and the curse of getting on with life.

I am not an expert on the Ottava Rima form, but I assume this follows it well.

What brought Hoovsie meandering in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I think I saw this mentioned by you on the Newsfeed!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* This is a great idea.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I like that you can keep the item as it is to enter it. I think one time there was a thing where we could rewrite.

I felt like I wrote the best thing I've written here was given a couple of very nasty reviews by people who should know better in how to be diplomatic and treat other writers.

This still bothers me that this happened. I think reviewers should be about encouraging writing more than cutting work to ribbons, under the guise of "courageous" (meaning nasty) reviewing, but that's just me. I know most do not share my views.

Good way to get a second and fresh look at writing we are proud of.

What brought Hoovsie meandering in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I saw you had added so I came to read and send a review.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* That is interesting about all your family. I think the masterpiece thing is for others to say, but I don't think famous families are any more a masterpiece than a normal family. A lot of them have a lot more opportunities than others, so there is that to be considered.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I used to think one way about my family. When one member of my family did what she did, it changed everything. I don't know how I feel about any of it anymore. There is love, but there is a bit of caution and self protection that has to exist in order to survive.

As long as my parents were both alive, it was one way and then it all changed and not for the better. Without them as the center of the family, there is not much of one left really. That's sad, but it's a testament to how important two loving and caring people can be to a whole group that depends on them.

A YaHOO Review from HOOves!!!

*Cow**Balloons*

What brought HOOves to meander and glide in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Balloonr*I am the judge for today in "The Writer's Cramp. Thanks for entering! *Delight*

I am reading and reviewing your item at 10:43 AM, WDC time, and storing it in my review tool for later delivery, after the contest winners are announced. As per the contest rules, no subsequent revisions or edits were considered in writing this review.

This is done so that I can give the next prompt at noon and announce the winner as close to that time as possible. I also like to send out reviews to all the entrants when time permits, so it gives me the morning to do that, also.

What does HOOves think about and contemplate while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* This sounds like a canine member of the family who is simpatico with his human. Dogs know when something is bad and they know how to deal with it, expeditiously.

What does HOOves applaud and moo about while reading your item?

I thought your story fit the prompt picture very well and the description of the thought process of the dog were priceless.

Very enjoyable and creative!

*Thumbsup*

The Writer's Cramp is a great way to meet other writers (by reviewing their entries) and to get your work read. Also, many Newsletter items featured and Quill entries have originated from experienced writers who regularly read in "The Writer's Cramp. Whether you win or not on a particular day, rest assured that your item will be read by those on this site who enjoy reading for its own sake.

I think this is wonderful - it is about facing one's fears and moving on. You find a way to cope with what life throws at you and, as you indicate, with God's help, you find the path to take in order to move forward and carry on.

Some days are definitely harder than others when it comes to moving one hoof in front of the other, that's for sure.

Great post for the prompt!

*Cow* I saw you had added and came to read.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I share your affinity for the moon and all it's inspiration and comfort that it gives.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

It is interesting that you mentioned that song, Moon Shadow. I love Cat Stevens and every July, I play his greatest hits in my car. Otherwise most of the year it's Irish music. But July belongs to Cat and Moon Shadow. I love that song and one called Father and Son the most. Every time I go anywhere I play that song. I might even do it in August.

I can see why you would miss seeing the moon on your travels to work. It's like a guiding light or friend protecting us.

Great entry!

I clicked on the Read and Review option and was taken to your fine poem.

The character I liked best is the family dog who is happy just being. I have a basset hound as a member of my family, so I know how uplifting that could be.

The good thing about backyard camping like this is that when the weather does flare up (and who predicts accurately these days, anyway) then you can go in without dealing with driving through a flooded campground.

I agree with the last line of the last stanza. Save better and go to a theme park or Vegas.

I'm not much into camping at all and that's an understatement. Poor Ben gets the blame as Dads usually do in these circumstances.

Interesting portrayal of that family dynamic, which leads me back to loving the attitude and demeanor of the dog.

Nice work!

I clicked on Read and Review and it took me here to your fine Tanka poem.

I have only seen this depicted on TV. My first reaction would be to run away with the staring. It is a brave thing to do.

That is not to say I would rule it out forever. One year, 2011, was so rough that I probably should have done it. But, my reaction would be similar to yours. I don't want to do something that will make things worse by letting a bunch of strangers into my troubles.

Those first two lines express the hesitation for me. I cannot imagine feeling that exposed with people I have only just met.

Fine work!

I clicked on the Read and Review option on the left side of the screen *Glasses* and it took me to your fine story.

So, Matt is doing all this after she did what she did (his wife, Marie) I won't give away the plot in the review. I felt bad for him. The presence of best friend, Greg, downstairs was ominous. It implied (to me) that Marie was up to something with the best friend of her husband.

It seemed like she and Matt connected at first, but were never on the same wave length afterward. That is where I landed anyway. I felt for Matt, but not the other two. They seemed sort of like bit players who weren't relevant except for the fact that they had such an impact on Matt's life and demise. Matt is a most forgiving and loving spirit.

This was very descriptive and well written, with a twist at the end.

My reviews are my reactions to the reading and not some attempt at displaying editing expertise.

I enjoyed visiting and reading your work very much. Well done!

I clicked on the Read and Review option on the left side of the screen and it took me to your story about faith lost and found again.

I think that a lot of children reject the teachings of their parents, just out of asserting themselves. But if the heart is willing, a soul who questions can find their way back to faith with love and guidance that is gentle and understanding. All is forgiven when faith is reaffirmed and restored.

As long as faith comes naturally to an adult and is not coerced or pressured, it can lead to a very peaceful and profoundly inspiring way to live.

Maybe nonbelievers will reject the premise, but I think that faith can accomplish wonders that we can not even begin to imagine.

Very inspirational story about a girl named Amy, and her love for her family. She opened her heart and mind, and therefore, found her way back to faith.

Fine work!

My reviews are reactions to the subject matter of the writing, rather than any sort of detailed editing foray. I did not see any corrections to suggest.

Well done!

*Cow* I clicked on the Read and Review Option and it took me to your fine poem, welcoming the birds and sights of spring.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I thought about how now it is summer. Spring, this year, was unseasonably cold and summer has been very hot and dry. Well, every year is different, isn't it? But there are some things you can count on (pretty much) as the seasons go.

I clicked on the Read and Review Option and it took me to your fine poem about summer.

There is much to like and appreciate about this season of vacations and travel. People explore other areas during the time of good weather. The raining floods, of late, sort of dampen the enthusiasm this year, but most years it is a fine time for being outdoors.

This was my favorite passage:

"There is no need for any materials
For this wonderful season."

It is a truly, "no frills" time of year. That's quite an original and creative way of looking at a season that is usually steadfast in it's warmth and sunshine. This year has been an exceptional one of weird weather happenings, but I still appreciate all that is good about summer.

Finely crafted poem - well done!

I clicked on the Read and Review option and it brought me here.

I think with some people the question is the equivalent of a hello and they don't even pay attention to the answer. Is it more honest to not even ask the question?

People care, but most are so wrapped up in their own dramas, they don't realize what the other person hears or sees. It's worse now with cell phones.

This is an interesting, albeit short, commentary on life today.

Maybe add to it at some point as you make observations on daily life. My reviews are typically reactions to what I've read rather than detailed edit attempts.

I clicked on the Read and Review option and was taken to your fine poem honoring those lost and those who survived D-Day.

That generation did not like to talk about things that happened and you have captured that very well. And so it goes, even between father and son.

My father fought in the Battle of the Bulge, but he never liked to talk about it. I learned a lot of things about what happened to him and his friends, after he died. I wish I had been smarter and asked him about it, but maybe it was for the best. Some things, like being part of liberating camps, he never would have told me.

This is my favorite part of the poem, but all of it is wonderful:

"More than nine thousand American graves
hold the unfulfilled dreams of the young men
who died upon Normandy Beach, its waves
red with their blood. They did their duty then!"

And so they did and we would all do well to remember and honor all that happened during that War. I fear the current generations are too self-absorbed to care.

We can hope, though, as my grandson is interested in history. He's just 11, but he's very keen to learn - hope for the future anyway.

Wonderful poetic tribute here, my friend! Always a pleasure to read your work! I am not surprised that Sherri Gibson honored it. Says a lot about her, too.

I clicked on the Read and Review option on the left side of the screen and was taken to your suspenseful short story about being trapped in a museum with mummies! How frightening! You describe the experience very well and I was transported to the Smithsonian and remembered about how dark, cook and creepy some of that place is (by that place, I mean the Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C.)

This definitely gave me the shivers as I read and thought about being trapped inside without the lights. Yikes!

At some point, you might want to spell check this and read through in order to make corrections and edits.

What brought Hoovsie meandering in a space time continuum over to your port?

*Cow* I clicked on the Read and Review option on the left side of the screen and was taken to your fine poem.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I think that beneath the facade of beauty and kindness, a lot of time there is selfishness and evil. It just seems to be the case and buyer beware when falling for such a "beauty". Time and aging reveals all, though.

I thought some people were perfectly nice until we disagreed about something and then the mean came out. I run for the hills when that happens, but you never know who will turn into a name-calling monster, especially when it comes to the internet.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite passage:

"Behind those eyes that are deep,
There lurks an evil mind
That knows only selfishness
And, to reason, is blind."

If you can figure out someone is like this, never disagree with them, just walk away - that's my best advice here and elsewhere.

Very insightful poem.

*Cow* I clicked on the Read and Review option and it brought me to your tips about fishing flies.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea* I love fishing, but I throw what I catch (if I catch anything) back. It is just the action of being out there that is so calming and relaxing. I've done deep sea fishing off the coast of Florida and fishing in the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, along with fishing in Kiawah Island, SC. It's all about just being out there and being quiet and observing things, everything going on. I like fishing on a boat better than on shore.

I clicked on the Read and Review option on the left side of the screen and it took me to your very romantic story about two dog lovers, who meet at the Dog Park.

I particularly enjoyed Gracie's attempts to intervene. Dogs can be very loving and jealous companions. I have a basset hound who does not like us to get lovey dovey when she could be the center of all attention and the world, really.

The conversation between the two people is natural and reads like a couple that is attracted to each other and slowly getting to know one another. Thanks to Gracie's antics, the relationship isn't moving too fast, either.

Very entertaining story - I enjoyed reading it very much!

I clicked on the Read and Review option on the left side of the screen and was taken to your fine story.

How brave these people were and how deserving of a new start in the country that in its suspicion and distrust didn't treat them right. Trains are such a symbolic mode of transportation, especially in WW II times. Thinking of this train, I was reminded of trains with one-way journeys over in Europe.

History judges countries by how they treat their most vulnerable citizens. Not every leader gets this, but the ones that are great are the ones that do (at least eventually) get it.

At least this train ride portrays hope for the future and maybe some forgiveness going forward, for the mistakes and cruelty of the past. The speaker, a child, represents the future and looking at others in the world fairly, without prejudice.

I guess that is the best we can all hope for in the end. A fair chance for a good life. That is the promise of this country, after all.

Very fine writing here! Well done, indeed and I love the title - it's perfect!

I clicked on the Read and Review option on the left side of the screen and it took me to your inspiring story of a friendship that ended up helping a young teen in unexpected and gratifying ways.

She does her best to help Efren with his situation and ends up being inspired to reach out to others. There is a sort of safety and safe harbor in friendships and helping each other at this age. The fact that knowledge is the key to a way forward is not lost on Cornelia. Efren's struggle is hampered by the adults in his life who use him as a tool I think that would be a road block that would be almost insurmountable as far as moving forward goes.

But when one tries to help someone else, invariably one is helped in one's own journey. That is the secret to paying it forward. The person doing something for someone else is helped immeasurably by using kindness and generosity of spirit to ease the burden of another.

I enjoyed reading this very much. My reviews are reactions to my reading and not meant to be detailed exercises in editing. Lovely to visit with you today!

I clicked on the Read and Review option and it took me to your fine story, adopting a protective bug-like approach to the world.

I have heard doomsday and end of the world so many times since the 1970's that on end of the world prediction days, I forget to check if I am still here. My ex sister inlaw was a Jehovahs Witness and she was always prattling on about Armageddon, but whatever. Thinking that if it happens, I will undoubtedly be informed too late to do any good. So, it's better not to spend a lot of precious time thinking about what ifs.

But, the bug/roach persona could be an effective defense to what lurks beyond. Moving the doomsday clock sounds like a good way to go as long as those in charge know which way is which. I don't have a lot of confidence in that and haven't since 2000. Both sides of the fence.

I hope there is music at the end. Some nice music. I would be a spider, but not a roach. I think that we need new management on a lot of levels, but I am just a worker bee no one cares to pay attention to.

Interesting thought to ponder over the time remaining. What is the point of most things?

Review of The Bus Passed Me

I clicked on Read and Review and it took me to your fine poem about a harrowing journey.

I have experienced this sort of nastiness, traveling in strange lands in the past. Paris was a nightmare and so was Philadelphia.

Not welcoming places, as a rule. I guess we have to pay attention to what we are wearing and see it from the native point of view, in the instance of this poem.

This was the pivotal stanza:

"I realized my Boston Bruins
jersey was causing trouble
in the middle of
Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey country.
Maybe that's why the driver
looked at me and waved
as the bus passed me."

It sounds like a really long walk for any outsider. Some places welcome visitors and some do not. You learn which is which quite quickly if you are to survive travels abroad. Only idiots would be mean to someone based on what sports team they root for. Intolerant cretins.

Very enlightening poem!
