In my view, the primary focus should be on encouraging the writers to write. I do not review items I don't enjoy anymore because I see it as a waste of my time. So, if you get a review from me, I enjoyed reading your work. The amazing thing about this whole process is that reading an inspiring review usually leads to me reading more of a reviewer's work also. So, it's a win-win.

something I do not like. I do not enjoy writing hyper-critical reviews. I do NOT believe that "honesty" is a synonym for "mean." If I see someone being "mean" here on the public reviewing page, in group behaviors, or just acting as a bully I will not send them my reviews. The only exception to that would be judging a site contest - there all items get honest (and hopefully diplomatic) reviews of the work from me with no exceptions.

I clicked on Read and Review and it took me to your fine poem about what a park bench saw.

I like the unique and creative point of view. I bet a bench sees a lot of comings and goings, not to mention strange behavior.

This was my favorite part:

"Seven squirrels in trees and four birds taking flight
This old bench will tell what it saw in day and night"

It is fun to imagine all that the bench would tell us about what it sees and about humans and animals interacting with each other.

Very original and well written! I enjoyed reading this very much!

The reference to getting soaked makes me think this is literally about rain, but as a metaphor for life and taking chances with things.

This was my favorite part:

"I heard your voice and I knew that I wasn't alone you kept me company
when I didn't want you
today I knew I wasn't alone"

Lots of people find comfort in the rain. I think anyone who does will identify with this fine poem!

This time of transition to autumn is my favorite time of the year. I have been in Louisiana in the spring time and late winter (for weeks at a time working) and can only imagine what fall would be like. I have a picture of it in my head, thanks to your poem.

This was my favorite passage because the imagery is so vivid and fine:

"The lingering, lonesome sound
of a distant train whistle
slowly, surely gets swamped
by the summer serenade
of frogs singing from the bayou
and the chirping of crickets
crouching in the bushes."

I live somewhat north, but still in the south. We hear that train whistle in the evening and early morning here too.

Wonderful poetry - I enjoyed reading very much! My reviews are more a reaction to what I read than an attempt at detailed editing suggestions. I go with what I enjoy doing here, which is reading and picturing things in my head. Thanks for taking me on a journey to Louisiana again!

This is a poem about faith and its rewards, which are many. And God does know our hearts, that's for sure. With rhyming couplets you convey this very well.

This was my favorite passage:

"The Almighty Being who envelops the sky,
Knows whose heart is beating for Jesus and why,"

That last line that starts with "Why", I would change so that it starts with something like

"Still" perhaps insead of "why" because why is repeated in that line and in the 2nd line ending of the same stanza.

That is my suggestion, but ultimately it is your poem and I'm not the expert - you are.

I enjoyed my reading visit with you very much, as always! Well done!

*Cool**Idea* Joe sounds like quite a character. He seems to sense when people are receptive to his talking. You never know when humans will be open to that sort of communication.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

*Thumbsup* I liked that he scored a touchdown and doesn't like his bath. My Boo doesn't like a bath much either and she tries to avoid it as long as possible. But it's the nail clipping that we have to have the Vet do that she really hates. Boo and Joe would probably get along well. They are both important members of the family, I reckon.

I enjoyed reading this very much and could picture all the action happening.

This brought back memories of many Christmas trips in the car. Siblings can be so annoying at the time and endearing in memory, can't they?

Grandpa tracking the route and progress of Santa and his reindeer sounded like something my father would have done for his grandkids. I don't think my grandfathers were as into weather as my Dad was.

This brought a happy tear to my eyes and I enjoyed reading very much. It brought me a little bit of Christmas magic in July!

This story is told from the heart and will definitely appeal to children of all ages. What a wonderful life your characters of Hannah and Jacob have led. They didn't have any greedy or selfish thoughts, all their lives, but ended up living in a castle. It snuck up on them - the realization of all they had achieved.

There are a lot of self-aggrandizing people in the world and a lot of them are politicians. It is refreshing to read about a mayor who cared more for his people than he did for himself. It all worked out for him, the end.

I thought this story was exceedingly well written and I enjoyed every word.

My reviews are not meant as detailed edits or critiques. I do what I enjoy here, which is reading and writing about my reactions to what I have read.

I think that the spirit is the thing that we have to be open to exploring. To let that light in can be a positive move. Also, being tolerant of different points of view is a key to a benevolent and open mode of energy. Unconditional love is a hard thing to get to in this world. It has to be about forgiveness because we all make mistakes.

The only suggestion I would make is to add or include a passage about tolerance of others. We are not a monolith, who all see things the same. That is my truth - that there is no one absolute right way. We all have to get to a point where we can agree to disagree where there is the search for knowledge and direction.

I enjoyed reading this very much. My reviews, typically, are reactions to what I have read rather than detailed edit attempts. I find that I do more reviewing and enjoy it more if I do what I enjoy.

Very well written and inspirational essay!

This poem is so fascinating in the subtle way it changes when the order of the lines is reversed. It has a lot to say about the world we live in. I think the first stanza most closely represents my feelings in the matter. The speaker/protagonist in the first part wants to make a positive change and feels it is in their power to do so.

The second stanza, to me, is more about a sort of helpless resignation to the inevitable problems and obstacles that face us in life.

It is obvious that you put a lot of thought into this and the careful choice of words is both eloquent and moving. With a different approach and word order, you totally change the thrust of what you have written.

When I review, I am giving you my reaction to the writing. I do not enjoy detailed edits so that is not my focus. It is an approach that works for me, but each of us has to find our own path to enjoying the process that is reviewing.

Very well done indeed! I enjoyed reading your words. Bravo!

I like the title as it conveys the fact that she is exhausted in many ways - from work at home and in the working world, and from having someone who is so deceitful in her life.

There is some ominous foreshadowing on what the reaction might be. Confronting this sort of thing can be even more exhausting to all. The one part that gives me (as a reader) hope is her fantasy of a better man. Of course there is one out there. She just has to summon her energy and look.

I think the color of the lipstick you mean to have is pink. You spelled it piuk with a typo. *Noter* Otherwise, I thought this was a very powerful and moving story.

You can always count on the birds to come back and to tell you when it is time for it to be spring. They are very reliable, especially robins with their songs.

It gives us hope in the winter, of things to come. It is a sign of longer and warmer days if you enjoy that sort of thing. I do because it means more time in the pasture.

This was my favorite passage:

"Snow receded, revealed
the spring-soft ground
and fall abandoned field."

I could picture it all in my head, the transition of seasons then, even though now it is summer.

All through the long winter this year, I longed for spring. Yet, there is something ominous in believing that a seasonal change may hold the answer to everything that is wrong in life.

That is how I read this, be careful what you wish for as there may be a catch or something about the change of this season that is bit off-putting.

This was my favorite passage:

"the caterwauling stops and
they withdraw without emotion
but the squirrels persist with their cynical rambling."

I agree that squirrels are rodents who are typically up to no good.

I liked the tone of this and the somewhat surprising caution when moving toward the warmer season. It reflects my feelings (which are mixed) as well.

I like the title you have chosen very much. Dad is somewhat of a trickster here. I can picture my Dad doing this, too. Love the enthusiasm of the little girl. It's sort of heartbreaking what they are searching for.

You packed a lot about the parent/child relationship into a very short story.

This is about caring for a parent who is having some challenges. I went through it with my mother in the last year of her life, so I could identify strongly with the caregiver. I know when I noticed it with my mom, but I do not think that was the beginning of it.

For that reason, this is the part that stays with me:

"The memories return,
out of chronological order,
and I wonder
why I didn't connect the dots."

The passage of time brings things into clearer focus, I guess.

This was very honest and moving to me and brings back a very hard time in life, caring for my mom at the end of her journey.

*Cool**Idea* I think there is a push one way politically, then another. It always goes to far in one direction before it swings back in the other.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

The thing about funding education is interesting. The more they spend on it here (in the U.S.) the worse the test scores are.

I don't think throwing money at things (especially when the government runs it) accomplishes much besides enriching government officials and their friends.

There is still a lot of corruption and broken promised, just like back in WWI.

I support Israel and stand with them on most things so I don't like the pushback there. But time will tell what happens, won't it.

This is a thoughtful and well reasoned piece of writing.

I clicked on Read and Review and it took me to your comedy essay about a not-so-funny subject. That is when you get dismissed from a long-held place of employment. I think anyone now who has not experienced some of this is a rarity.

It is more and more common that management of companies exploits workers. The power that they have is pretty frightening when you think that it can make your whole life come crashing down based on a heartless corporate decision.

My favorite was (Special High Intensity Training) .

I think there is a lot of this all over the place these days. This is a timeless piece and because of that, I am amused and disturbed at the same time.

Well written and amusing in a painful way. Well done!

What you say about books being reflections of ourselves makes a lot of sense to me.

You can change real life into something different by fictionalizing. It is like Jane Austen wrote with some happy endings for her characters. Maybe she didn't have one in her own life, but she was generous enough to give them to her characters.

I clicked on Read and Review and it brought me here to your writing exercise. It is interesting, this counting of words in order to use more active language. I repeat words too when I write. I only catch this when I go back a while after it is written.

It is good to think about and analyze characters before doing the writing. I used to just let the stuff write itself, but giving it some thought fleshes out the characters more.

This sounds like an interesting class of instruction. Eliminating words is a good exercise. Hemingway used to write and then take things out and see if it made any difference. He said that what was left out was more important than what remained. That is an interesting theory to me. "just" would be an easy one to repeat, as is "now" for me.

Pite is an aging practitioner of magic. He is ill and suspicious of his protege, Clifton, who puts on quite a convincing act for a while.

I liked how you had Clifton reveal himself. It's as if he can't control the urge to boast. That is his undoing in the end, as it is with most braggarts and boasters.

The ending seemed very richly deserved in Clifton's case. It is scary to think about how we all deteriorate if we live long enough. No one needs assistance from beings like Clifton. The elderly and sick amongst us are particularly vulnerable attack.

I enjoyed reading your story very much.

I am sure everyone here can identify because we all have been "new kids" at various times over the years. It is something that you experience over and over again as part of life.

There is a lot of truth in the notion that we are all our own worst critics and biggest obstacles.

We don't always expect what life has in store for us. I guess it is essential to get to know and like ourselves first of all. Some people take a long time to get to this place, but it is a worthy goal.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I particularly enjoyed this passage:

"But lessons are learned
when you arrive home
to silence."

Indeed they are. But sometimes they are important things to learn on this journey of life.

*Cool**Idea* I do not pretend to understand people who treat animals this way. Animals know only love and devotion once they've experienced it. Too bad humans are so flawed and cruel sometimes and don't direct it to those who can fight back.

It takes a horrific sort of cruel person to use animals in this way.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

*Thumbsup* This was a particularly heart wrenching and vivid passage:

"Her failing heart remembered the warmth and love
of her first home. A warm bed, food and water and
a warm lap whenever she needed it. She needed
it now more than she ever had"

People sometimes are just plain mean and animals who rely on and love them pay the price. It shouldn't happen, but it does.

Very eloquent and moving. I wish it didn't happen.

*Cool**Idea* This reminded me of when my better half sharecropped a huge vegetable garden. He would dig up the potatoes and bring them home and we would eat them that day. There is nothing that tastes quite like (or as good as) a fresh from the garden potato. Yummy!

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"A woven basket
well worn
and filled to overflowing
with potatoes freshly
dug from dark dirt,
hung somberly
on the gallery wall. "

It is so descriptive and spot-on that I do not feel that I need the picture, but it totally fits.
