Review of Jack's Birthday
Review by HollyMerry
Rated: E | (5.0)
This story made me smile. I began by assuming this was about a human so realising that the protagonist was a Jack o’ Lantern as the story progressed was a great surprise. You did a good job of revealing this through concise details in a tight word limit.

A lovely piece that captures the magic and natural perfection of a butterfly transforming from a caterpillar in its chrysalis. You have put a lot of thought into this and the detailed research shines through. I once had a butterfly vivarium and it was incredible to watch the butterflies emerge from their chrysalis and dry their wings ready for their first flight and release back into the garden.

What a beautiful and well written entry, congratulations on being a winner of this contest. I love butterflies and moths and I am currently looking at moth friendly flowers like nicotina and night stocks to add to my butterfly garden bed. The tips about photographing butterflies were great as it can be hard to get good photos as they can quickly fly away! Puddling isn’t a term I came across before so it was nice to learn something new.

This was a great opening chapter - well written and launching the action in a natural way that is full of drama that makes me want to read on. Haakon clearly knows what he is doing and is at home in his time travel world. I liked the mystery about why Haakon is back in 1066 and the fact that it is only slowly revealed what he is doing there. The fact even he doesn't know what the Deviation will be made me want to read on.
One aspect of this chapter that is particularly strong is the use of the senses to make the story feel real. Another aspect that I liked was the high level of historical accuracy. It was nice how you contrasted modern and Viking times, such as mentioning that Scarborough was a village back then.
You created a clear picture of the close relationship between Haakon and Gunnar. It came as a surprise to me that Haakon had already confided in Gunnar that he was a time traveller and this shows how close they are. Having created this relationship, it added force to the shock of Gunnar being stabbed towards the end of the chapter. I hope he will be saved as Haakon transports him into the future.
The Viking with his Harley Davidson Motorcycles helmet was an unexpected twist at the end of the chapter and added a note of humour to an otherwise tense fight scene as the Vikings attack the village.

Review of Wisps - Published
Review by HollyMerry
Rated: E | (5.0)
This is a wonderful story. It is well written and gripped my interest with its exciting incidents, tropical island setting and the twists in the plot. I felt that every word contributed to the meaning of the story. I liked how in the first part of the story Ray is so full of loving thoughts and praise for Tasha and how you contrast this to his warped views once the wisp has possessed him. Holding off revealing that the wisp had left him when they were rescued until the last sentence was neat. I'm so pleased to see that you have had this story published as it deserves it :)

I imagine that as this story is published you won't be able to make any changes to it but I thought I'd make a few minor suggestions that occurred to me as I read it:
At the end of the first section where Ray and Tasha are caught in a storm, perhaps you might have a rock looming or a wave breaking the boat apart at the end? At the moment it wasn't immediately obvious that the boat wrecked here until the next section with Ray and Tasha washed up on the beach showed that it had.
I'm not sure if you need a comma here as well as the ellipses: 'so loving,…'
Would 'the whites of her eyes enlarged' sound better than 'the whites of her eyes big.'

I love how Eden likes designing and making dresses, I enjoy this too and I bet the ones Eden makes are beautiful. It is cool that Twilight is going to train to be a knight but I am worried about him now Princess Jasmine has set her sights on him. I'm sure true love will win though in the end though...

Review of Don't Trust Cupid
Review by HollyMerry

A funny poem with a great rhyme scheme that makes it read like a song. I like how you contrast stereotypical images of roses, songs and Cupid with the mocking reaction of the lover who kicks the poor guy in the knee!

I can't believe I just found this magical and exciting story series full of romance, gypsies and pirates. The Midnight Well is an eerie setting and made this scene full of atmosphere. Eden sounds pretty in her gypsy skirt, heart-shaped face and long black gypsy hair. Twilight sounds a handsome hero and it is cool having the pirate connection.

Review of Sea Foam

This is a wonderful story. It is well written with good characters, dialogue and some lovely vivid descriptions. The part about Katerina's brush with death leading her to meet with the mermaids was my favourite and was written in a way that captured my interest and made me want to read on. The opening sentence and its repetition at the start of a later chapter was a nicer touch too.
My only suggestion is that I would like more explanation about the 'land dispute' between the unicorns and Katerina's father mentioned in the third paragraph. Was this a dispute over territory and why did it come about?

Congratulations to Mr Darcy! But then who else but him would win...
It's a shame that Cassandra burned some of Jane's letters. I bet they had lots of interesting things to read too!
I like the Poldark series, the scenery is so pretty and the costumes are beautiful. It was a good storyline and it was sad when it finished.

Review of Magic Pie
Review by HollyMerry
Rated: 13+ | (5.0)
A humorous read about a little girl born with magic. I liked how you brought modern and realistic elements to the magical fiction genre. Having a little girl with magic creating havoc as she throws a tantrum has a realistic and funny idea for a story. The pace worked well and held my attention as the story came to a climax with the fire. The ending threw in more humour as the father adds his piece about healthy eating to his other warnings about using magic.

Review of Eve

A nicely written poem about Eve and how she brought trouble on all humanity through being tempted by the serpent. I was inspired by Eve's story and when I wrote about the symbolism of apples as the fruit of temptation. What a lot of trouble she landed us in that day in Eden!!!

Review of George IV

This poem made me smile. I love the Regency era as described in Jane Austen's novel but not the reigning monarch at the time. You did a good job of summing him up here. The poem was well written and easy to follow.

A lovely piece. Kate Middleton is so lucky not only being a princess but a distant cousin of Jane Austen! The part where Mr Collins thinks about Elizabeth taking tea with Lady Catherine if he married Elizabeth always makes me laugh. It is nice to have found a fellow Jane Austen fan on WDC. I have just posted a short biography about Jane that I've written in my portfolio.

A nicely written story full of drama. The story was very visual and I liked the reference to Valkyries, armour, the inn and the effects of war in this fantasy world. The First Person viewpoint works well. You might want to re-read this to alter a few grammatical errors to perfect it.

A funny twist on a traditional Christmas rhyme. I love how the suggestions got more funny as the poem went on - I certainly wouldn’t want seven loads of washing to launder or eight cows needing to be milked as Christmas gifts! Thank you for making me smile with your amusing writing 😊

What a lovely, interesting article. I enjoyed the idea of Emma putting the names of who she thinks people will marry in crackers, what a matchmaker!!! I would pass on the bullet pudding too, I bet there were a few broken teeth if someone accidentally bit the bullet!

I thought I would read another newsletter about wonderful Jane Austen - I wish I was in her stories too so it was nice to find you have written so much about her. I am working on something about Jane which I hope to post on WDC soon.
I liked the discussion about Mansfield Park which is a nice storyline but I agree I’d rate it lower down my list of favourites than Pride and prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility.

A beautiful poem. Though it is short each word is like a gem and conjures a clear image. I enjoyed reading about the form of the poem - I hadn't heard of a Lady's Slipper poem form before.

The scrapbook sounds beautiful, what a lovely idea. I would love to see it. I am doing some Jane Austen themed watercolours at the moment.
The wax model of Jane is nice, I agree she would look better with a different hat like a pretty bonnet.

A lovely piece and it is nice to think of spring and Easter now we are moving slowly towards it in the UK, it has been so cold lately! The teapot set sounds beautiful and the Mrs Claus cap will be cosy to wear at Christmas. So many ladies wore caps in Jane's time (anyone over 30 had to wear one) but now they are so rarely worn.

A lovely, well written fantasy romance. The characters were conveyed sympathetically in a few short words which captured the interest of the reader and made them want to discover more of the story. The tale had a legendary feel to it due to the repetition of Myrddin getting both Bear and Mary to drink and then sleep to be cured. The ending was heartwarming.

Review of Ravyn
Review by HollyMerry
Rated: E | (5.0)
Such an uplifting poem! I loved reading about this warm-hearted little girl and the things she does. She sounds so real and full of fun and I hung off every word I read about her. The first line caught my attention with the unusual image of 'a frog giggling girl.' I also liked 'The clouds will part and rays of Ravyn, come shining through with a heart as big as the sun.' The ending was lovely and gave the poem a deeper spiritual meaning. You used the poetic form well.
