Review of Darkness
Review by KingsSideCastle
In affiliation with I Write
Rated: 13+ | (5.0)
This is nice. There are some great descriptions and we get some strong contrasting imagery when describing the type of darkness that the author/narrator appreciates. Throughout this work darkness is seen as something that allows a person to appreciate the light at a particular moment and we get a lot of nice examples where light and darkness complement each other to provide a beautiful scene (an oil lamp, sunsets, a wood stove burning, stars and fireworks at night).

There is a lot of jumping around between each scene as this essay follows the narrator's thoughts/experiences from childhood to adulthood but the strong description allows a reader to picture what is going on in each moment. I could visualize the room she grew up in and how it changed upon redecorating, the summer home and the funeral. The vivid description really pulled the reader into each separate scene.

The title and description for this work was also a good hook drawing in readers and making them wonder the appeal of darkness. It pulled them straight into this story. It is a very well written piece! *Smile*

for entry "Andre's Instrument

Great Entry for the Banana Bar. I liked the story that you set up for Andre's musical instrument choice and the background behind getting to know the character. The first person point of view is a great choice and it makes the reader feel like they are getting to know Andre along with the Narrator.

There are some very very nice subtle comedic touches to this entry that I really liked. My favorites were the pop up note for Juli Ard [sic] *Laugh* and how Andre had to work his way up from the Late Late Late Late show. *Smile* It was a lot of fun to read.

Nice Madlib. *Bigsmile* The song is easily recognizable. You have an idea of what you are changing as you attempt this but it still didn't work out like I pictured completely. I chose my cellphone as the object of choice. It produced some wild results. My question for what you wonder about produced was off. I phrased it badly and got "I wonder How Shiny it is?" *Delight* It was very fun to try this. I'm sure people will really enjoy this. Thank you for making this.

This poem was a nice blend of astronomy and romance. I was visualizing the night sky and constellations as I was reading this. All of which were described beautifully. This soul mates in this are shown to have a powerful connection with cosmic forces uniting them. It is a really good read.

I've been reviewing a lot of Valentine's Day works as part of a challenge so it is a little refreshing to read a Valentine's Day themed poem that where there the narrator isn't blissfully in love throughout. Smashing Chocolates is certainly a fun way to work out aggression towards a holiday. *Delight* This had a nice balance because it wasn't completely dark. The narrator still had good friend to spend Valentine's day with. It was fun to read. *Smile*

Sweet story. The are some great descriptions in this. I could picture the wild atmosphere of the bar on Valentine's day really well and visualize how attractive the girl the narrator meets. The titular kiss was intense and described beautifully. I really enjoyed reading this very much.

Great Poem! It had a nice flow to it and the rhymes made it fun to follow. I love the descriptions and it is very sweet. I really relate to to the idea that a person can make your heart beat faster with a smile even if you've known them for a long time. It shows a very strong attraction and the author/narrator is lucky to have that type of love in his life.

Review of The Sound of Ice
Review by KingsSideCastle

Hi Simon Dunsil
Welcome to writing.com

This was a nice poem. I haven't found a lot of comedy poems on this site lately so this was really fun to read. You capture the experience of slipping on Ice perfectly. Ouch! The emotions and reactions sound about right. ^_^;

I was smiling and laughing throughout reading this but I cracked up the most at the "Where's Global Warming" line.

In terms of style ... it flows very nicely and the rhyme in this made it all the more fun to read. Thank you very much for writing.

Welcome to Writing.com Amindthattravels

This story was an exciting read. I tried Flash Fiction earlier this week so I know its quite a challenge to convey an entire story in a short amount of words. You did an excellent job. It reminded me of a Twilight Zone episode where characters come face to face with bizarre twists and the unexpected. The strongest elements of this story was conveying the tense atmosphere and Sam's emotions to the reader. It definitely works extremely well as a Thriller. Even when the events going on in the story are remain vague and mysterious, there's a sweetness to the ending that still comes across. Having Sam discover the shadowy character was the love of her life was a great way to close it out. *Smile*

Review of Rain
Review by KingsSideCastle
Rated: E | (5.0)
Welcome to Writing.com Idek !

There is a good poem. There are a lot of emotions that rain can reflect that are shown here. It opens with a great verbal depiction for readers with the rain pouring down from dark clouds. Rain is often associated with sadness so the comparison of it being a teacher that helps the narrator of this poem embrace pain is a very interesting one. It was a powerful read. Thank you very much for writing.

Review of Zombie apocalypse
Review by KingsSideCastle
Rated: E | (5.0)
Welcome to WDC Zion

I like the Zombie Genre and this setup lays the groundwork for an exciting story. The character profiles at the beginning was a great way to introduce characters to the reader and they are well developed. Readers get a sense of each characters personality and traits just by reading them.

The story segment reminded me of earlier seasons of the Walking Dead where each character had their own motivations and when they would interact with a new character there would be conflict between characters that were untrusting against those that were more humane. So far a very exciting plot and I hope to read more of this storyline in the future. *Bigsmile*

Review of Flesh

*Smile* Very well written. This short is set up in such a way that the ending could very easily be a surprise twist. I suspect most readers will know what they are getting into from the title and genre of this but you do a great job of setting up the scene so that the reader is lead to believe that the group in this story is a persecuted religious sect. The last line reveal is very intense and there are some nice bits of foreshadowing such as the way one of the character's smile is described. It an exciting read. Thank you very much for writing.

*Bigsmile* This one makes me smile. I like the idea of a dog playing matchmaker. It is really sweet to visualize a Love dog with red hearts bringing people together and instills a warm feeling in the reader's mind. It was very creative. Great Valentine's day themed poem!

Nice Poem. The words really convey how much the narrator cares about the person that this poem focuses on. The reader can feel the strong connection between the two. There is some great poetic imagery in this such as Sparrows soaring, the billowing wind, and the subjects drenched with tears. There are some great rhymes in this poem as well making it flow very smoothly. It was sweet to read.

There are some great analogies in this poem. The author really pinpointed a lot of qualities about love and conveys them really well to the reader. That are some great verbal depictions i.e. "the Plodding Ox, a Blaring Trumpet, Love looking up to heaven" that evoke great visual images in the reader's mind. Some really nice writing!!

Review of The Shoe Emporium

Nice poem. I like the triple AAA rhyme scheme. I haven't seen it used that often. There were a lot of approximate rhymes in there but there were some really creative choices like finding a word to rhyme with Facsimile. The Shoe emporium seems like an exciting place to visit and there's a nice energy to this poem that I really like. Great work. *Smile*

for entry "~ Two Hugs ~
Review by KingsSideCastle
Rated: 18+ | (5.0)
This entry a great bit of reflection. I can definitely follow the train of thought and it is a great bit of introduction leading into the focus of the entry. I didn't think hugs could be that expressive but the way the the three hugs are described in this show just how much emotions they are capable of conveying. Each hug is described vividly allowing the reader to experience each hug for themselves. Each person in the the story manages to convey their feelings through that action without needing to utter a word.

I also really liked that how the last hug at the end closed this out. The death of a loved one is a grim situation and the cold reception from family members made it all the more harsher. The final forgiving and welcoming hug did a beautiful job of balancing what darkness of the experience with sweetness. Great writing!!

Review of D is for Monkey
Review by KingsSideCastle
Rated: 13+ | (5.0)
My initial thoughts reading the title for this was this story might be related to the Anime One Piece. The main character's name in that series is Monkey D. Luffy. This story's situation adds a bit of light comedy to the horror scenario. There's something funny about about how way off Monkey is from being a D word. That said there is no doubt that the situation the narrator is in is a terrifying one. It is like a recurring nightmare where the dreamer knows what is going to happen but is unable to stop it from occurring.

The story does a wonderful job in conveying the tension to the reader. You can fell the narrator is dreading what is going to happen. He's not clapping when the children are. It is clear very early on that something is not right.

The monster at the end of the story is described really well making it easy for the reader to picture. "A beak with hundreds of sharp teeth" provide a chilling visual description that a person shudder thinking about it. This is very a very well written work. *Smile*

From the mouths of Groundhogs... ^_^

This was a really fun story. I love the portrayal of the groundhog. He sort of had a grouchy/grumpy personality which really fit with him being woken up in the morning. He's a touch more annoyed than you would expect for someone that only works one day a year.

I'm guessing that the end of the world was in reference to the Mayan prophecy or another world ending prophecy that didn't come to pass. When this was originally written (2012) the end of the world date had not yet passed so there was a little bit of uncertainty that the world would end on December 31st even if there was only a very small chance that it would have been true. Now that that prophecy has been fully disproven, the groundhog's words seem to be all the more wise.

I think a lot of people reading this story automatically think of the Bill Murray Groundhog's day movie when reading this. That movie got seemed all the more relevant in 2020 when everyone's days were repeating themselves in Quarantine. I can't help wondering how this story would have played out if the prophecy stated the world was scheduled to end in 2020. I imagine that there would be a lot more doubt involved with people feeling a lot more uncertain about their futures.

Anyway this is a really well written piece. Thank you very much for writing it. ^_^

Fun Personification Poem. *Smile* This Poem definitely capture the experience of being a cake perfectly. The caption for the story gives a excellent foreshadowing of where this poem is headed. *Smile*

There are some great moments of emotions that the cake displays... some pride in how much time the Cake took in being prepared and of course a large amount of terror as the poem cuts to close. It is upon re-reading this poem that I really appreciate the building sense of dread the cake is experiencing. I can picture it knowing what is about to happen as the candles disappear from it... it is very frightening. Well Done!!

Review of Ghost Lover
Review by KingsSideCastle
Rated: E | (5.0)
Great Poem! I love the visual imagery the words evoke. "Ice, clouds, the words ghost and heart" all make me picture certain things. This poem succeeds in telling the reader a story in a limited amount of words.

There seems to be a nice ambiguity over whether the described "ghost" is a physical person or the narrator's imagination/memories in dealing with heartbreak.

My favorite segment of this was the second Stanza where the reader is given a beautiful image of a goddess walking on ice. The third stanza of her falling through the clouds is great as well.

The end of the poem is cool combination alternating focus between both the woman and narrator showing one affected by the outcome of a decision in the most and another needing to make a decision for the future. Very nicely written!!
