Review of The Ploughman

This is a beautiful poem. I love the whole premise, so very true, the farmer is the most important. The poem itself rhymes, flows well and has a rhythm. It paints visuals of all the people that do make up this world and we need them all-we each offer something or we should. I have read some of your other poems and agree with your views of our former President. Right now, if we don't help people America is going to be in a hell of a mess. Keep writing and stay safe.

Excellent poem, love the prompt and think I will "borrow" it. As usual, your poetry always stirs me with challenging thoughts. I had to read this one over several times and believe I do agree. Not that it matters since it is excellent writing, flows well with rhythm and I enjoyed the read. Have a great day!

This brings back a lot of memories, the boxes we decorated and wondering if you were going to get that special Valentine. They still do this in 6th grade? I always felt sorry for the kids that had only a few. Well written, I really enjoyed the story and could see this happening. Best of luck to you!

I loved this tribute to your grandfather. It was written beautifully with just the right amount of words to make your relationship come alive for the reader. He sounds like a wonderful man from my generation, love the van in the Smoky Mountains-have made many year trips there and it is still beautiful despite the growth. When you started seeing it in the 1960's with your own parents, like I did, it really does look different but wonderful memories. I feel like I know a little of what your grandparents were like and sounds like you are a wonderful family guy also. Keep writing, you are talented. Stay safe. Congrats on the win.

This is such a sweet poem with a innocent touch of a child's wonderment. It made me smile. I am so sorry that you have Parkinson's, I figure you must be about my age and I have dystonia which is a lot like Parkinson's. They both effect the same basal ganglia of the brain and that is why I had to stop working as a RN-having tremors and uncoordinated movements makes life very hard. Have you ever looked at The Michael J Fox web site? I have a very good friend with Parkinson's that belongs to their support group. There is one on Facebook also. Lots of love and help out here. I can't write as much as I used to either with trembling hands and my brain fog. You have a friend, whenever you want to talk, ok? I do understand. It is nice to know you are published with your church. That is lovely. I have never tried to get published, my family doesn't read much. They are big TV consumers=4 grown sons and 6 grandchildren. Life is a Kaleidoscope of colors, enjoy each one.

I have to say that I loved this. How you managed to get this humorous over such an awful time amazes me but you made me laugh. This is well written, has great moments of human behavior, doesn't have a political slant. Congrats, I can't get there. I love the mask, toilet paper, zombies and chocolate comments. As usual, you took an opportunity to turn real messy life into something to smile at. This was well written, my friend. Thanks for the smile. I needed it. May we have a better 2021.

This is an intense poem/prose about mental illness and the way it is warehoused with antipsychotics and behavioral therapy, ECT and other modalities. People are not cookie cutters from the same mold, they are stars, hearts and four leaf clovers. You really did an excellent job with writing this. I don't know a family that doesn't have members with mental illness. Of course there are degrees and how it affects your job, relationships, place in the world. I have 2 sons that are vets and struggle with PTSD issues; anger, insomnia, impulsive behavior, among others. Addiction is/has also been a part of their lives. I am a recovering addict with a neurological disease and had to go on disability after 20+ years of being an RN. I read some of your blog and you and your wife are really courageous people. Sounds like you live in a great place for older people. Back to the review-this piece flowed well, making its valid points and I totally agree about the way the mental health system is run. I have an Uncle who is a retired psychiatrist who tried alternatives and had good results. We are still learning-look at Rosemary Kennedy being given a lobotomy at a young age. These diseases have always been with us-people just didn't talk about them. They used to just warehouse people (Awakenings by Oliver Sachs, M.D.)
Great writing, wear a mask, and take care. Do You!!

Well, that was a perfect title for what I am feeling about one of my kids (grown). It's so easy to tell yourself to turn it over, there is nothing more you can do, but so hard. This was the perfect poem for me today. It's proof that if you put the question out into the Universe the answer comes back. Thanks for the truthful, talented and much needed read.

Have a blessed day,

That is exactly what our nation is facing right now, a unbelievable division of people we have become. I am amazed at the people that can compare Jan. 6th to the rioting in cities after the non-violent protests. I still say we need to remember the people of Flight 93 that chose to die rather than take the chance that our capital would be attacked. What would they thing after their own sacrifice? The people that are involved in this evil aren't going to stop and they have always been around-just found a voice to speak with. Excellent poem with wise words-wish you didn't have to write it.

Excellent entry, it was short, funny, well written and believable. My brother sleepwalked when he was little. When we lived in Michigan, Mom used to talk about him walking out of the house, through the snow in bare feet. They put a bell on him. Now I guess there are so many electronic devices you can use. But that was dangerous, you know. It is like an Alzheimer's patient (my sister-in-law's Mom ) walked out the door and climbed into a garbage truck. Oh, life is full of crazy stuff. Good read and congrats!

Excellent poem that is unfortunately very spot on. It flows well with the true funny stanzas that drive me crazy because they are true. If it wasn't so unbelievable it would all make a great Netflix series. I hope that we come through this next week without bloodshed. It is good to know there are actually people that do believe we have a problem and have had one for a long time. I worry this isn't going away any time soon. It is a day to day thing. Thanks for the read and we will hope for a much better 2021, couldn't get worse. Stay safe, great poem.

Any comments are only my personal ideas and meant as suggestions.

My overall impression:
I was enchanted by this story. I read it three times. I don't know if you plotted this out or not but it feels like stream of consciousness. This world of writing is a mystery to me, I look at it as a gift that keeps giving, the more you give or are present at the page. I feel the mystery and magical world in this piece. Excellent writing, keep it up

What I liked most: The constant metamorphous of this fantasy world. So beautiful to think these powers are ours with surprises all along the way.

Suggestions for change:None

This writing made me feel: I had the pleasure of watching this take place in my mind and just thinking, "How very cool! What could be next?" Now, that you are free, what is next? Wish I had written this, best compliment I can give.

This is a great story. I am in the room with your character, looking at the ceiling, and thinking right along with him about the kid. Then I am on the floor, terrified that I can't move; the great fear that we all get to the point of needing help. No one wants to be dependent. People don't want to read about this either, not to the point where you can see yourself there. You write very realistically and a lot of people just don't want to think about anything but fluff. I love the way you recover the drama and end it with a light optimistic note.

Life is full of great stories and I love the way you write them.

Take care,

Loved this. I am so old I remember Art Linkletter's show "KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS"(?). I think it is time someone brought that one back really big. Ellen GeGenres would be good at it and people would watch. I love to talk to children, they are so smart. They should run the world! One of our son's old buddies stopped by the other day with his 5 year old and we decided The Avengers should take over and fix our government. I couldn't agree more. Thanks for the laugh!

Take care,
Kat

You should write a story about the "real" Shaman (the guy with the horns and painted face and spear) that was is the Capital building. His attorney was telling Chris Cuomo how Trump had told him to come there, so he did. I guess that's his defense. Would he go anywhere Trump told him to? I have some suggestions!

This is a wonderfully sad read and I am crying as I write this. You transported your "pen" into the brain of a person that can no longer communicate. As an RN, I worked with a few of these patients, like your character and I would talk to them like the nurse you mentioned but you don't think too much about what they are thinking about. You are too busy usually. There are few people that can write something this intimate and realistic. It reminds me of the following book, a true story and worth the read.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a memoir by journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby. It describes his life before and after suffering a massive stroke that left him with locked-in syndrome. He used his functioning eye movements to answer the questions from a friend that was writing his memoir. Amazing read!

I couldn't find anything wrong with this but was so emotionally involved, I might have missed something. You are so talented. When I grow up, I want to write like you.

Thank you for making me appreciate my own life today. I am listening to Phil Ochs right now, wishing I was younger and could be helping others.

take care and stay safe,

My overall impression: You are a very talented writer and this piece is a wonderful example. The language that is used gives the reader a visual and emotional reaction. It is very true that the best writing comes from the hidden treasures inside us. That can be love, grief, anger, jealousy and many others.

What I liked most: Someone please tell her that writing will give wings to her chained emotions but treasure the memories in the most beautiful and delicate way. What a beautiful way to describe what the art of writing from the soul does.

Suggestions for change: I really was so involved with what you said I didn't check for errors. If you are like me, you can reread any of your pieces and find mistakes.

This writing made me feel: Like I discovered someone I don't remember reading before and I will read again. Excellent writing, keep it up and stay safe.

Ok, this is a 5 star winner. After all the stuff that has happened lately, I am on edge anyway and this scared the, well you know what, out of me. My youngest son used to terrify me hacking into accounts when he was a teenager. That was an easy fix to take the pc away from him then and now he is a responsible Dad and hopefully, things are more secure. But I just watched the Capital get run over by crazy people so anything is possible. I felt like I was in the room with you, your writing is excellent, the dialog perfect and I vote for you. Another winner of a story from one of the best storyteller I know. Stay safe.

You have done an excellent job of writing about this frightening escape to freedom. I am sure you have read some real stories and they are so frightening, there are the dogs and slave catchers after you plus people from the North are also on the outlook as they get an award for returning slaves. It was nearly impossible to do this and how badly they must have wanted their freedom after being caught, branded, lost a foot and still tried it again.. I can feel their hope and desperation as I read this. I hope you will continue it because I want to keep reading. Just to keep it real I think most slaves traveled at night. Read the book by Lisa Wingate "The Book of Lost friends". It is based on the factual account about women that do escape and how they did it from Louisiana. "Twelve Years a Slave is Good" ,there are many that aren't brand new so you could get them online or through a library. This is kind of a special interest of mine, I have written about it a lot. You are a good writer with a lot of visuals and a plot that is believable. Keep writing.

This is an interesting read and I enjoyed it. I actually haven't read Hemingway for a number of years. I have read biographies by his wife, Hadley Richardson and other works where he is mentioned by Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and of course Gertrude Stein and I believe Dorothy Parker. He was a wonderful writer, very passionate-went through women like he did alcohol. I know he severed from a lot of pain, always taking chances. He sure loved life, all the beauty and brutal business of it. As far as the bull fights, he was in love with the whole ritual from what I have read. Fascinating life but I guess he suffered from depression also and committed suicide, as many in that family did. You really hit on the subject well for he felt for the bulls more than the matadors. What a wonderful writer. I should read his books once again-a full life indeed-done his way. I guess he was quite the charmer! Thanks for the read.

I love this poem of determination. It flows well and paints a visual and emotional picture of trying to push through depression and its roadblocks that plague a person's mind. It sounds like there is something much deeper within you that can pull you through. I believe this could be applied to any physical or mental disability. You reach a point where you have to convince yourself that you can do it-whatever that may be. Excellent use of metaphor.
Good luck!

Excellent realistic situation that I can picture in my mind, doing everything you are taught to do because it comes automatically. There is only time later to reflect on what might you have done differently. You are an excellent writer and sounds like a wonderful compassionate physician. Being an RN, I know when it is a trauma you all work like a team and experienced ER RNs don't even need the prompts, it is so smooth. Of course while retelling , it is necessary to include the information. I have never worked in ER but had patients code on the floor and we always had a wonderful Code team, it was get out of the way except to bring the charge RN or doc up to date on patient info. The situation you describe would be awful and I never had to face that with a child. It gives me such pride to know that most of us are professionals and do what we need to. It isn't up to us to judge another human being, after all. Stay safe and keep writing. I am retired now but still miss the job so much sometimes.

This is a profound statement of truth. I will put it away with others I gleam from ordinary people and writers of poems and non fiction books. I am currently reading Obama's book and I am trying to keep from highlighting it, so using post-it notes instead. Thanks for the common sense and practical comment. I talk to myself all the time so don't feel alone. I have worn my husband out after 30 years, he just says, "Ok, dear!"

Happy New Year! Stay safe. Perhaps we will see real change this year but these problems have gone on for a long time.

This is a good piece and tells me that we can be like sheep and be led by others. That is a personal choice that we make every day. If you choose to educate yourself and find out the truth about a lot of history we have been told, you can affect change. We all have a brain and in America, no one tells us what to believe. WE have rights, can protest and make what we want to of our lives. I certainly did, I never listened when anyone tried to tell me what to believe. I am a very independent person that has chosen what to do with my life. I really like the way you have written this. There is always a choice. We are fortunate to live in a democracy. Ask the many people who don't and that is why they want to come here to live, for a better freer life. Be safe and continue to write. I wish you a safe and peaceful 2021.

My overall impression: You certainly tell it like it is. What a great metaphor, I love using a tree because they live so long and do not die easily. Our democracy is dying a little every day. Hoping 2021 will be much better, it doesn't have to try too hard. This poem flows and rhymes and has an emotional pull that makes you want to cry. Wonderful powerful writing, poet.

What I liked most: I love the 1st two stanzas and then the following 3 ending it with "another leaf falls"-so true. Then the ending is the piece de resistance. All politics is local and if people would only get interested in their local elections and maybe one person, one vote?

Suggestions for change: None

This writing made me feel: Angry, I have been angry for quite awhile now. That requires action and right now we can't do much but vote with Covid. Keep writing and stay safe.
