Write an open letter to a person or group of people you strongly disagree with and explain why. Use reason not emotion.

This is a letter to a developer who wants to build a housing development in the hills of Perth after a devastating fire. I’m representing Save Perth Hills.
.

Save Perth Hills has written to our Premier, Mark McGowan advocating for an Independent and Open Inquiry into the Wooroloo Bushfire.

This catastrophe was Perth Hills’ first Climate Change Mega-fire, destroying 87 homes and leaving more than 300 Hills’ people homeless.

We’re seeking urgent clarification from Premier McGowan after correspondence from DEFS implied no formal decision has been made to even hold an inquiry.

Each bushfire holds valuable new information to help us understand and manage our increasingly volatile environment, better inform our policy makers, specifically with regards to planning, and educate the Community on bushfire evacuation dangers.

The extreme risks to people and property, that the Anglican Church and Satterley’s stranded urban North Stoneville plan would bring to our community, along with its non-compliance with WA’s Bushfire Policy 3.7, were reasons why WA’s Planning Commission’s refused it.

Mundaring Council cited the same reasons for refusing, recently, new subdivisions in Swan View and Parkerville.

Surely we need to learn from each and every bushfire so we can plan responsibly for a safer future.

Mark McGowan– It’s been more than 3 months since this disaster. Why haven’t you announced a formal investigation?

We urge you to officially call an Inquiry into the February 2021 Wooroloo bushfires - to offer closure to the hundreds of victims, and reassurance for the future of us all.

What does happiness mean to you? Reflect back on a specific moment when you felt unconditionally happy. What circumstances made you feel that way?

I prefer contentment to describe what others may call happiness.

Bhutan holds the distinction of being the only carbon negative country in the world. This is a monumental title to hold. Think peaceful, untouched landscapes, punctuated only by the sounds of its rich wildlife and gurgling rivers. This tiny country judges the successes of their political policies on how happy the people say they are.

The feeling of happiness is fleeting, however contentment can be present even when dealing with minor irritations.

I stood today staring at the beautiful Swan River in Perth. The sun was warm on my back, I looked at the water birds, listened to the sounds of the water, people going about their day and I was content or maybe happy. I do know I was very pleased to be alive and said so to my husband. Is that happiness?

Write about the most historic world events of your lifetime. How are they (or will they be) remembered? What will the history books focus on?

There are so many world events which have happened in my life time, it’s hard to choose which ones to mention. It’s a little too late in the day for me, I mean literally. I like to do the blog much earlier.
Anyway I’ll mention a few that will be remembered in the history books.

The Second World War had the most impact on my family when I was growing up. My first years were without my father who was away fighting. It changed the way women were. Having to raise families alone and do the work of men in the factories and on the land.
The moon landing in 1969 was amazing. The world held its breath. It was so hard to believe.
Billions of people looked upward at our moon. How was it possible that there were men walking about up there?

There are so many historical events. The information on all of them at people’s fingertips if they are interested. But are they?
I used to wonder at all the history my grandparents lived through but so much seems irrelevant now.
How can it not be?
I used to hate learning all the English history at school. All those dates, Kings and Queens. I thought it all so boring and of no use to me. Today’s children will probably think the same about the World wars, or a Wall in Berlin being pulled down. Why would they care?
And yet it is important for us to remember the past, how else can we learn from the mistakes?

What is the most ridiculous or one-of-a-kind thing you’ve ever bought? Tell us the story!

I'm wracking my brains here. There must be so many ridiculous, useless things I've bought over my lifetime.
What about a spy pen? It actually worked really well. Thats a story for another time.

Clothes, bought on line that looked nothing like their portrayal, which I couldn't be bothered to send back.
Dog shoes that my dog wouldn't wear.
A kitchen towel holder, that every brand of paper towel made in Australia was several centimetres too narrow. consequently simply dropped out.
Gym memberships?
A three years course in counselling, costing lots. Never used.

This is getting depressing.

“Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone I’ve ever known.” — Chuck Palahniuk

Read this article and share your thoughts about how the people in your life have had an impact on you.

“They’ve all helped me grow, become more resilient, and many supporting me when I most needed it. I’ve learned, matured, and became wiser thanks to my interactions with them.”

It certainly is an interesting concept to consider. What sort of person would I be if I grew up in a different family, culture or country. Who knows?
But surely we aren’t born purely to be moulded, we must have some free will.
I actually don’t feel as if anyone has had such an impact on me that I’ve been turned into the person I am now.
Moving to another country at the age of 28 probably had the most impact on me. It was if I was marking time in England waiting to be able to be myself, the person who I was meant to be.
Funnily enough I never felt at home until we emigrated. Because we still lived so close to our families it was if we were being smothered.
I always encouraged our children to leave home, to be independent from a young age. Each of them returned to the nest for different reasons for various lengths of time.
I realise now on reflection how much I value my own independence despite being the youngest child the only girl, and probably was a bit spoiled. Even though I married young and had three children, I have always looked forward to having my own space. I don’t know who inspired or influenced me to feel like that.
I think I’m just me. I am original.

What do you do to make the world a better place?

I usually attempt to make the people I’m around, smile. I figure if everyone could grasp the bright side of life and spread a little sunshine the world would be a better place.
I know of course, life is serious. Bad things happen all the time, but if possible you can make someone’s life a little easier by listening,, empathising and eventually raising a smile, no matter how faint, then you’ve done a great job of bettering your little corner.
If you can’t make it better, then just don’t make the place worse. Don’t break into houses, steal cars, or beat your wife up. Without burglars, rapists, car thieves and speeding drunken drivers, what an amazing place the world would be. We could leave the scientists, inventors and philanthropists to do the heavy lifting.

Many fairy tales are often based in truth. Research the true story behind your favorite fairy tale and share it with your readers. What lesson or warning was the tale trying to impart?

I know that I’ve read just about every fairy tale and fable to my kids over the years, just as I was told them and my parents and their parents before them. It’s a wonderful thing that some things still get passed on in some form or other. These days it’s usually through film rather than books.
I hope the same stories continue be told and to evolve.

The only nursery rhyme’s origin I’m pretty sure of is Ring a ring a Rosie. It’s supposed to be about the great plague in 1665. The ring of roses is the rash that people got, and “Atishoo, atishoo, we all fall down “ is when they died from the disease.

If animals could talk, which animal would you want to have a conversation with? What would you ask?

Nearly bedtime, just spotted the prompt before I turned out the light. So I’m not much of a conversationalist with humans at this time of the day never mind with animals🤣

Well it would have to be my dog Lucy. For the last two weeks we’ve been dog sitting our daughter’s dog, Gigi. She (the dog) is a crazy nine month old, very active, really destructive, has stolen Lucy’s favourite teddy and chewed it up and generally been a pest. Lucy has been super patient with her. She’s eight years old. However she’s looked at me often this week, with a look that I thought said, “when is this thing going home?”
Today Lucy has moped around the house, she seems lost without Gigi. I would ask her if she misses her or is happy for a peaceful household again.

What does it mean to be a “grown up”? What do you do regularly as an adult that you dreaded having to do when you were a child? Have you found ways to maintain a sense of childhood wonder or curiosity? If so, how?

As an adult I go to the dentist every six months. That was certainly something I wouldn’t have done as a child. Dentists were to be feared. Slow drills and gas masks for extractions. It took me years to overcome my fear.
As a child I hated Brussel sprouts.
As a child I hated bedtime.
As a child I was afraid of dogs.
As a child I was afraid of my school teacher.
Oh my goodness I could go on. I overcame all of the above. Even school teachers 🤣 and I love bedtime.💤

I love being childlike, I can and do, all sorts of silly things with my great-grandkids. In fact I’m more curious now and in awe of this amazing world we live in.

What TV show character would it be the most fun to change places with for a week? Why?

This might be a difficult one for me as I don’t watch much television. However a character with whom I’d change places would have to be someone I’d feel comfortable with, a mother figure perhaps. I’d hate to be a super anything. Woman, girl or man, come to that.
It would have to be a gentle person, I think. Someone like a character out of “Call the Midwife.” It’s an English programme set in London just after the Second World War. That was the era in which I was born.
Maybe Mrs Durrell in the television adaptation of The Durrels from the books of the same name. They are the memoirs by Gerald Durrell of growing up in Greece with his eccentric family. Mrs Darrel is played by Keeley Hawes. I loved the era that the books are set in. Especially in Greece.
I did enjoy watching the latest television adaptation of Queen Victoria. She was so in love with Albert, the only downside to being her would be the number of childbirths she endured!
Ooh, I’ve just thought of one. Villanelle from Killing Eve. She killed but with humour and an innocence too. She’s a true psychopath but intriguing, beautiful and funny.
