| PROMPT May 3rd What was the best thing that happened in your life over the weekend? Looking at the week ahead, what are your goals and how will you motivate yourself to achieve them? *Notep* *Noteo* *Notep* *Noteo* *Notep* *Noteo* *Notep* *Noteo* *Notep* *Noteo* Well in our neck of the woods there are heaps of restrictions as to what, where or how we can do things. So consequently it was a very quiet weekend. We have just come back from a fortnight away in the caravan. The weather has been perfect and as we were with our daughter and her husband the company was great too. There was a Derby match on between our two West Australian teams and up until two hours before the kick off 45,000 people were heading to the stadium and then it was decreed by our premier there’d be no spectators. So that was very disappointing. This week we are dog sitting our daughter’s crazy ten month old labra doodle. She keeps me on my toes. In and out, she can’t make her mind up. She brings sticks inside and makes a terrible mess. So I expect that’s what I’ll be doing, mostly, cleaning up after Gigi. My goal is to catch up in the ‘I write 2021’ contest. I’m looking forward to Wednesday’s Writing Women’s group. We are preparing all our contributions to this year’s Anthology. The finished product is very professional. I’m not feeling overly motivated this week, I think it’s the let down after the holiday. But I will try. |
| PROMPT May 2nd What smell or sounds brings back great memories of your childhood? My sense of smell is a family joke. It appears I can smell things that others can’t. I’m known as the nose that knows. I’m useful though when trying to find the exact location of smelly things. Dead rats in the roof for example. I can pinpoint the spot. Which saves my husband time searching the whole roof space. Sometimes it’s a curse though. Often it pays not to be able smell things. Anyway as to childhood memories. One is the smell of freshly cut grass drying in the sun before being bailed up into haystacks. I’m immediately transported to a field behind our house when I was about seven. Boiling soapy water. I can see my grandmother boiling sheets in a copper pot. She’d be turning them with a wooden implement, steam making her face bright red as she tussled with the washing. Smoke from an open coal fire reminds me of my childhood homes. We always burnt coal which I used to go to the coal shed and collect buckets for the fire. There is another smell which would send me back sixty odd years if I was able to smell coal dust again. We don’t use coal for heating anymore. I think that stopped years ago in the UK in an attempt to clean the air and the buildings. Evening in Paris perfume. It was my mother’s favourite scent. It was in a blue bottle shaped like the Eiffel Tower. I think I can remember the smell but I haven’t seen any for years. Mothballs. They were used in every wardrobe to scare off moths. Again I’ve not seen those for years. Probably because children would eat them thinking they were sweets. |
| PROMPT May 1st Write about one (or more) of your creative idols. Who do you look up to? Whose work are you most inspired by? Why? Welcome back everyone. April just whipped on by as usual. It’s good to be back. I haven’t any real idols, no author whose next book I hang out for. There is one singer songwriter I really love to listen to though, Australian, Tim Minchin. He wrote the music for Matilda, the musical. He is everything I admire, a family man who has kept his feet on the ground. He’s a wonderful musician, a comedian, singer and songwriter. He’s someone I would willingly pay good money to see in a live venue. I follow Michael McIntyre the comedian. I’ve mentioned him in my blog before. He’s hilariously funny. I do love people who make me laugh. I’m just watching Rocket Man the life story of Elton John. What talent he had and what a journey he had, giving pleasure to millions of people all around the world. You have to admire that, surely? |
| PROMPT March 30th Congratulations on making it to the last day of the competition! What was your favorite prompt from the last month? What was the most rewarding aspect of participating in the competition? Well if I had to sum up this particular 30 day blogging challenge, I’d say that most prompts asked me to remember. I had to dig deep for some of those memories but the one I liked were my earliest memories. I’m not absolutely sure the ones I spoke about happened exactly as I thought they did. But they are the memories I have and hold dear. Anyway the challenge let me wander down memory lane. I was surprised to see how those memories manifested themselves. They’re just snippets, just flashes, with nothing either side, before or after. One wonders why those particular ones remain imprinted on my memory. Who knows? I’ve really enjoyed this month, there has been more interaction than other challenges. As I am always one of the first to enter my reply to a prompt, I try to read and react to the other early bloggers. So maybe some of you might have thought I didn’t read yours. But before I do the following day’s entry I try to read everyone's. I missed reading Robert Waltz  he decided to give it a miss this month. Kåre Enga in Montana  I feel this month’s challenge was often difficult for you. So many memory prompts😩Not everyone wants to look back. | PROMPT March 29th What did you like / dislike about where you grew up? What do you like / dislike about where you live now? It’s thought provoking when you are confronted by a question like this. I never once thought I didn’t like where I lived growing up. My mother was a true homemaker so we were always made comfortable, certainly physically. We moved around a lot when I was a kid but each place seemed like home. Probably because my Mum was there. Maybe the place I didn’t enjoy living the most was the time we had seven years running a corner store. Living on the premises, there was never a time you felt as if the day had ended. Lots of hard work for little reward. But having said that, it was where I learned my work ethic. Even now if I sit down for too long I feel guilty. My childhood/ adolescence/ early adulthood was in England. I loved England. I liked the uniqueness, the humour, the countryside and the history. Now we live in Australia. I like that it’s different but similar to the UK. We speak the same language, well almost.🤣 There’s nothing I hate or dislike about the country but I still love BBC programmes on television. I love that we’re almost Covid free. I love that my children are Australian. |
| PROMPT March 28th We need your help filling the Challenge War Chest with prompts! In your entry today, write three of your own 30DBC prompts and then choose one to respond to. 1. If you could change lives with anyone, who would it be and why? 2. When were you last out of your comfort zone? 3. Tell us about the kindness of a stranger. The last time I was out of my comfort zone was earlier this year. I’ve been a member of a community writing group for over ten years. It’s always been advertised as Creative Writing classes. So we usually get people who have never written anything before. People who want to write their life story or that of their mother/ grandmother/ ancestors. Anyway what I’m saying is that the ones that come along want to be taught how to write. I’ve always thought it is very hard to teach anyone to write. My take on it is just write something, read it out to the class and be open to receive feedback. Eventually you will get better at the craft. Anyway I decided this year it was the time I went somewhere to learn or mix with really great writers. So I joined a women’s writing group at Katherine Suzanna Pritchard writers house. They host writers in residence there, people who come from all over Australia to write their novels in the seclusion of the beautiful Perth Hills. My first day there, the group were all invited to bring along their published works. I really and truly felt way out of my comfort zone. Anyway I’m still there and am able to participate on a somewhat, nearly, almost, playing field. |
| PROMPT March 27th In your entry today, write about one of the most frightening moments of your life. OMG There have been so many it’s hard to select one. So I may put them in order of fright. 1. I was eighteen and asleep. A man woke me up with a hand over my face. He asked me how old I was. I told him, and then he said if he took his hand away did I promise not to scream. I nodded. Then when he let go of my face I screamed for my Dad. The funny part was that my dad and big brother fought each other in the dark. Each convinced they had the intruder who had turned the power off. Anyway he escaped without being captured. 2. My two year old boy slipped out of the car at the local rubbish tip as my husband dumped some rubbish. He was backed over by a truck. Because of recent wet weather he survived as he was pushed into the soft dirt. He escaped with a fractured skull. 3. The same son had lit a stick from a garden fire. He waved it around and then as it started to go out he dipped it into a full can of petrol! I fully expected it to blow him up, but according to some law of physics it didn’t. 4. Being caught in a typhoon in the Philippines. That was pretty much up there with frightening moments. I’m pretty sure there are other times which my mind has blanked out. |
| PROMPT March 26th If you asked your friends to describe you using only three words, what would they say? And why do you think so? Oh this is hard. I’m not sure actually what they would say about me. Perhaps each one would describe me differently. I know I can usually make people laugh even though I don’t think I’m funny. Perhaps it’s the way I try to minimise some of the dramas that seem to follow me. So maybe amusing? Number one. I hope I come over as compassionate and caring too. I find it easy to put myself in other’s shoes. So perhaps for number two. Empathetic? Even though I’m not a person who puts myself out there, I’m actually quite reserved. I think I hide that side of myself and put on a brave front. So those that don’t really know me really well would say the opposite. But my true friends would say. Self effacing for number three? |
| PROMPT March 25th What’s the best or worst practical joke that you’ve played on someone or that was played on you? I may come over as a spoilsport or a misery, but I HATE practical jokes. I don’t like being on the receiving end or being the joker. I don’t like making a fool out of anyone, I always feel so sorry for them. Those television programs that used to be all the rage like Candid Camera can be funny but I don’t like watching them. So I actually don’t have anything to add to this prompt. Sorry. Anyway I’ll be interested to see how others answer it. |
| PROMPT March 24th Write about some of your most memorable vacations. Where did you go? Who were you with? What was your favorite part of the trip? It is never the time you ate great meals, or read ten books lying next to a blue lagoon that you’ll remember. No, it’s always the times things went terribly wrong that stick in your memory and the tales you will relate. If I listed all the times we were inconvenienced or angry at each other over some missed mode of transport one would think we’d had a dreadful time. But it’s those times which give colour and texture to what otherwise would have just been a good lie down. So I’ll tell you about a few hair raising events or downright annoyances but these didn’t detract or ruin our vacations. A bad injury falling off a cycle rickshaw in Vietnam Being caught in a Typhoon in Manila Food poisoning in Vietnam Getting on a train in India having booked a first class cabin after weeks of travelling third class and finding out we’d missed the train by a day. Then being relegated to sharing an overnight apartment with six drunken Indian men. Discovering we’d selected a brothel as our hotel in Mumbai. Bed bugs in Thailand. Tsunami in Sri Lanka. Other than those mishaps, we had wonderful times. Honestly 🤣 |
