I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

This is a very unique concept.

Try avoiding forms of the verb “to be” such as am, are, is, was, were, etc. This is known as passive language. Using more colorful verbs can greatly strengthen your writing.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

I love the way this ended! I got married almost five years ago, and we made the wedding a lot of fun for both adults and kids by covering the tables with white paper and inviting everyone to draw on it. We also had a tropical theme and picked up tropical stuffed animals as decorations, which we then told the kids they could take home. The caterer said it was one of the most fun weddings she'd ever done. My friends sang a couple of songs, my parents sang a song, and my husband put together some playlists for the other parts of the wedding.

We've got one kid who is 2.5 years old now, and I plan on breastfeeding until 5 if he doesn't wean himself before then. The only way I would attend a kid-free wedding at this point is if it was reasonably close to home so my parents could babysit, as they often do from 6:30 to 9:00pm anyway.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

I feel sad every time I'm reminded of the details of climate change, but it's something people need to accept. I decided quite young that I wasn't interested in driving because of global warming (that's what they called it when I was growing up) and now I'm over 30 and have never had a licence. My family and ex-boyfriend pressured me to get a license in my early twenties, so I learned how to drive in case of emergencies, but I can't stomach the idea of doing that on a daily basis. In fact, I went through a bout of depression in my early twenties that I think was largely driven by the pressure to get a license and being dragged out to practice driving.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

This reminds me of when my ex-boyfriend's friend's wife called me family. While I was flattered, it did feel rather awkward because I knew I hadn't shared any of the most central parts of my identity with her. I do have other people I think of as family, though I don't speak with them often these days. I stayed at their house as my relationship with my ex-boyfriend was falling apart, and they sang at my wedding years later.

The grammar could use work. If you want a more in-depth look at sentence structures, I recommend reading "The Elements of Grammar" by Margaret Shertzer.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

I think it would be awesome if my husband painted his nails. It might help remind him to stop chewing them to shreds. My son is only 2, but I fully intend to paint his nails once he's 5 or shows me that he's capable of sitting still long enough for the nail polish to set. I think he'll be the coolest kid at summer camp with glow-in-the-dark nails!

I'm not a nail expert and there's still a lot I can learn, but I'd say I have an intermediate level of knowledge on nail stuff. I recommend looking at Youtube videos on how to fan out your nail brush while applying nail polish and other skills. Also, decide if you want to work with traditional nail polish, UV gel, or dip powder. I have all three types. I love traditional nail polish, but since I can't leave the kid with my husband or my parents for more than two hours, I have to stick with UV gel or dip powder for now. Traditional nail polish takes a long time to apply because you need to wait about 20 minutes between layers, and then it takes a long time to fully set, so I say it takes 4 hours to do it properly, and even then, you can wind up with indentations or texture in the nail polish surface if you let it press against blankets as you sleep.

I also suggest looking into water decals and foils for adding fine details to a manicure. You can get more "manly" designs such as lions and tigers if you like. I think tropical leaves and birds are pretty gender-neutral. It's also fun to get seasonal things like autumn leaves and Christmas-themed stickers.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!

Seeing science fiction presented in this format was a refreshing treat.

Since this seems like the type of story that would be best told orally, I recommend getting a program that reads aloud to you for proofreading purposes. I use Natural Reader since I bought it many years ago, but these days, you can get tts programs for free or simply access them from your browser. Here is a nice, free one: https://ttsreader.com/

This would make an excellent hook for a longer story. It leave so many unanswered questions for a reader to look forward to uncovering.

I recommend hyphenating 12-year-old. I wasn't focusing on grammar, but I didn't notice anything else.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

I'm glad you shared this, because it's important for me as a white person, and especially as a parent to a white kid, to think about these things. Right now, my kid is 2, so there's not much I can explain to him, but for now I tell him that pigs drive police cars. He got to play with some black kids at the library, so I'm going to continue taking him there often.

Thanks for sharing these pearls of wisdom. However, since you mentioned God, a goal of laughing at enemies does not seem to be in keeping with what God has commanded. See Matthew 5:43-48

I also recommend keeping in mind Mark 10:21-25

This is a great start! I noticed some verb tense inconsistency, so decide whether you want the story in present tense or past tense and go through to make sure the verbs support that.
