I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

This provides a lot of food for thought. I've heard it said that we cannot appreciate beauty without death. Now that I'm a mother, social media algorithms expose me to other mothers who wish their babies could stay little forever. Once, I saw a contrasting story from a mother whose baby had died and will never get big. Personally, I found the newborn stage terrifying because my child couldn't talk at all and I always had to guess if he was hungry or tired or needed to be changed or burped or needed a teething toy or . . . ???? They say you'll get to know what their different cries mean, but I honestly had no clue. I could, however, tell when he needed to poop by looking at his face, and we saved some money on diapers by putting him on the potty starting at 2 months. Now he's 2 years old and goes to the potty by himself when he needs to poop, or he points to the potty and says, "Poo poo," if he's stuck in the highchair. It's funny to think of how we all started out needing our butts wiped by someone else.

I'm glad you've found a system that works for you. Personally, my school years are behind me, but I found that I enjoyed my leisure time most when all my work was done, so I generally got to work ASAP and made sure I got plenty of sleep every night.
