Take UP Your Cross

Prompt:
Judges 21:25
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

What does it mean to do what is right in your own eyes? Is this something you do personally?

Answer:
To me, this is referring to self-righteousness. There probably wasn't any government in that time and area. These people did what they personally thought was right which could vary from person to person. You can be doing what you think is right and a lot of good deeds, but if they are outside of God's will for you, you are committing sin. This is why this verse is in a negative context.

I am sure we have all been guilty of this at some point in our lives. It is something I try to avoid doing now that I am aware of it. In the verses yesterday, they say that in all our ways we are to acknowledge God and he will direct our paths and to lean not to our own understanding.

Scripture writing - Romans 15:5-7

Scripture:
5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7 Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Observations:
Verse 5- God is a God of peace and consolation. He wants us all to be united through Jesus Christ.
Verse 6- This glorifies God.
Verse 7- receive others the way God receives you.

Application:
God wants us to be at peace and console one another. He wants us to be united together for his glory.

Prayer:
Dear God,
Thank you for your mercy and grace. Help us to to receive each other like you received us. Help us to be at peace with one another for your glory and to truly walk in your image and example.
In Jesus’s name,
Amen

Tell us about a special place and moment in your life.

One of my most cherished childhood memories was of my Dad’s mother pushing me in my backyard tree swing and singing “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” to me while I swang. My Dad had tied a rope to a big tree branch and placed a board he had fitted for it across the bottom for a seat. I loved that old home-made swing. I spent many hours in that tree swing while I was growing up. After I became an adult, the rope finally rotted and fell apart.

If you were to prepare dinner for the President and First Lady, what would you prepare? Would you be the host or let someone else be? Would you spring for table decorations for the table or leave it as is?

I would not spend extra money to decorate. I would probably make everything look as nice and neat as possible. I would be honest and I would continue to be myself. I would treat them like an honored guest rather I like the president or not. I would give them the respect and their security the respect the title deserves. I would prepare a nice meal with desert and some iced tea to go along with some southern hospitality. I am no celebrity and even if I was I will be myself. It is too difficult to be and maintain someone you are not. I know because I am a preacher’s kid. I will not play the pretend game just to be accepted. I am accepted for who I am or not at all.

Scripture writing - Romans 13:9-10

Scripture:
9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Observations:
Verse 9- The 10 commandments are based upon the principle of loving others as one’s self following Love God above all else.
Verse 10- The law is founded upon love. Love cares about others and doesn't cause harm to others.

Application:
All the commandments are based on love. Love God. Love others as yourself.

Prompt: "The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit." Nelson Henderson What are your thoughts about this quote?

Life’s meaning is different for different people just like their sense of purpose. I do not place the value of my life upon how many trees I plant. This is not my life’s meaning. If taken figuratively, I can see this as a good principle to follow. Figuratively, I could see this meaning that you should give to not expect anything in return. Life is so much more than that though. Life’s meaning for me is found living in Jesus Christ.

What do you think of stars?

Sometimes it can be relaxing to look up at the stars at night. I have always had an infatuation with the sky, day or night. It is like God paints us a new picture there all the time. I have seen so much beauty in the sky. When I was in my youth, I enjoyed sitting on the front porch, listening to the crickets, and looking at all the stars above.

Scripture:
14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

Take UP Your Cross

Prompt:
James 2:14-17
14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Does your life reflect your faith in Christ? Why or why not?

Answer:
I do believe that it does now. I make it a priority to read my Bible daily and pray daily. I have cleaned up my language and I am more careful about the things I watch and listen to. I am working at better anger control and remaining at peace. It is when I lose my temper that I have an issue controlling my language. I am not where I want to be, but I am not where I once was either. God is still working on me and so am I. Being a Christian isn't being perfect. It is being saved by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ.

Scripture writing - Romans 12:10-13

Scripture:
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

Observations:
Verse 10- You should prefer to be around other Christians and love one another with kindness.
Verse 11- Don't be lazy. Be passionate and zealous when you serve the Lord.
Verse 12- Rejoice in hope. Be patient. Pray all the time. Pray about something immediately when it is brought to your attention.
Verse 13- Be hospitable. Give to your brothers and sisters in Christ when you see they have need of something and you are able to help.

Application:
We need to be passionate in serving God and always ready at a moment's notice to fulfill the needs of others. We should pray immediately and not put it off until later. Seek peace and pursue it.

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
I worship you. Don't ever let me lose my passion to live for you. Help me to remain at peace with all men as much as humanly possible.
In Jesus's name,
Amen

Scripture writing - Philippians 2:14-18

Scripture:
14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
17 Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.
18 For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.

Observations:
Verse 14- Do everything without fighting and fussing.
Verse 15- If you do this, your light will shine, and you can be blameless and harmless and without rebuke.
Verse 16- If they shine as lights in their world, then Paul had not labored in vain.
Verse 17- I think this is saying if Paul had to suffer for their faith, it would then be worth it.
Verse 18- they can also rejoice and have joy.

Application:
Let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.

Prayer:
Dear God,
I want my light to shine brightly. Make me aware of anything that is dimming my light so we can work on fixing it.
In Jesus's name,
Amen

Prompt: Robert Frost said, ““A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness.”
How does a poem begin for you or what kind of a reaction do you feel when a poem is arriving?

When I begin to feel a poem coming on, I get a sense of vision and excitement. The ideas come rolling in. I feel the emotions. I see the picture in my mind, and then I write a description of what I am seeing, feeling, and hearing. Most come naturally to me. Others I have to work a little harder on, but writing poetry, writing in general is a joy to me.

What do you think poets need?

A good imagination, a little time to create, and something to write with is what a poet needs.

Day 3082: April 26, 2021

Prompt: “A good poem is a contribution to reality. The world is never the same once a good poem has been added to it. A good poem helps to change the shape of the universe, helps to extend everyone’s knowledge of himself and the world around him.” —Dylan Thomas
How does a good poem contribute to reality?

My personal opinion is that it depends on the poems. Some poems are fiction so I don't think that would contribute to reality. Others are a reflection of real things and emotions.

Saturday- How can we shod our feet with the preparation of the Gospel of peace and keep them that way?

We can have the plan of salvation marked in our Bible, or on an index card, or a sheet of paper, or a bookmark, or we can memorize it. We can work to control our emotions and remain even-tempered in tough situations. We pursue peace to the best of our ability.

Scripture writing - Luke 14:12-14

Scripture:
12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

Observations:
When you make a feast, don't serve others for recompensation. God will reward you.

Application:
Don't do good deeds expecting things in return. God will reward you in due time.

Prayer:
Dear God,
Help me to always have right motives to go with my actions. Keep me on the straight path.
In Jesus's name,
Amen

Discussion Questions

1. Why is it important to prepare Spiritually?

You never know when the Devil will plan to attack. You need to be ready spiritually like you would be prepared to react in case of fire or tornado.

2. How can we Spiritually prepare for hard times?

Pray and read our Bible Daily and listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit.

3.What choices during hard times can we make to bring more peace into our life?

We can choose to not react immediately and to give ourselves time to think first. We can try to avoid circumstances, people, movies, shows, etc...as much as possible that take away our peace.

4. What are some hard things you have faced?

My parents and other family members dying. Abuse. Arguments. Heath issues.

5. How have you gotten through hard times in the past? How has God helped you?

God always has come through for me and got me through those times. Sometimes it was the still quiet voice of the Spirit. Other times he sent people to me just when I needed them. He supplied things in advance I didn't know needed until I needed them. He would reveal a scripture, story, or poem at the right time. He would allow me to feel his presence.

6.What should our attitude be when facing seemingly hopeless situations?

Hope in God because all things work together for my good.

7. In what way is this piece of armor offensive/defensive?

It is a defense because it can keep us calm in ugly situations. It is an offense when we repay evil with good. Vengeance is the Lord's.

8. Where are you currently facing a battle at the moment?

My pastor is telling me I should not teach a Bible study because I am a woman and women aren't supposed to teach men. What do you think? I have already been instructed by the Holy Spirit to take a stand and to not stop doing the Bible studies. I will have a meeting with him Tuesday morning to discuss it. As crazy as it may seem, I could face disciplinary action from him and the church for this including being excommunicated from the church. I don't know how this is going to turn out. Pray for me if you will. It is ironic that I am writing studies on the armor of God and am going through this battle of my own.

9. Are you ready with the Gospel of peace?

I certainly am trying to be prepared.

10. What can you do to make yourself more ready with the Gospel of peace?

I could memorize more Scripture with the references so I can have them at a moment's notice.

Friday- Write about how you can share God's peace with other people.

I can share God's peace not only by telling others what Christ did for me but by being at peace with everyone as much as humanly possible. Romans 12 tells us as much as lies within us, we should be at peace with all men.

Scripture writing - Luke 10:38-42

Scripture:
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Observations:
Verse 38- Martha received Jesus into her house.
Verse 39- Martha's sister Mary sat at the feet of Jesus to hear his Words.
Verse 40- Martha was busy and overwhelmed with serving her guests and wanted Jesus to make Mary help her.
Verse 41- Jesus answered Martha. He knew she was stressed out.
Verse 42- Jesus knew Mary needed to hear his words more than Martha needed her help. So he refused to make her help Martha and continued letting her hear his words.

Application:
God is more concerned with what is going on in the heart than with outward appearances. Jesus knows what is needed the most and he will guide us to it if we choose to listen to his words.

Prayer:
Dear God,
Help me to always choose to listen to your words. You are a good God, awesome and mighty in power. You are able to calm the storms in our life and give us peace and confidence in stressful situations. You know what is best for us. Thank you for never leaving us alone.
In Jesus's Holy name,
Amen

Discuss a product on the market that needs to be improved. How would you change it? Why?

It is hard for me to think of right off the top of my head. I try not to be a complainer. Life is too short. If I don't like something, I don't use it. It is that simple. Although recently, there has been a bit of controversy over a certain dog flee collar. It killed some pets and vets are still encouraging people to use it. Yes, it gets rid of the flees, but you better hope it doesn't get rid of the dog too. That one kind of bothers me.

Feasting on the Word of God

Tuesday- Write about what you can do to have more of God's peace in your life.

I wrote the Bible study. Lol "Armor of God - Preparation of The Gospel of Peace (Shoes) However, I think for me personally it is going to be to control my temper better and be slower to anger. I have a very bad sarcastic attitude that at times has gotten me into trouble.

Wednesday- What Scripture verses can you have ready to read in difficult circumstances? What promises of God will help you keep your faith and trust in Jesus?

I have many. We are more than Conquerors. All Things work for my good. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you. Look unto the hills from which cometh my help. And it came to pass/ this too shall pass. I called upon the Lord and he heard me. Commit thy way unto the Lord and he will bring it to pass. Proverbs 3:5-6. I quote these things to myself and other Scriptures all the time. I use them in my prayers.

Thursday- Write about how God has pulled you through a difficult time.

God is currently getting me through a difficult time with my health issues. However, I wrote this story for a contest and it is about getting through a difficult time.

Scripture writing - Job 31:29-34

Scripture:
29 If I rejoice at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:
30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.
31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:
34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

Observations:
Verse 29- We should not rejoice in the tragedy of others.
Verse 30- We should not curse others.
Verse 31- We should share of our blessings with others.
Verse 32- We should be kind to strangers.
Verse 33- We be willing to confess our faults immediately.
Verse 34- We should be willing to help others when we can.

Application:
We should bless always and never curse anyone. We should always help others when we can and they are truly in need.

Prayer:
Dear Father in Heaven,
Thank you for all the good things you have given me. Help me to be willing always to share with others. Give me a heart for others in need, and let me always have compassion for others including my enemies.
In Christ's name,
Amen

My primary plan is to start by sharing my own personal testimony or experience. What I would do or say depends on the person I am dealing with. Scripture writing - James 2:18-24

Scripture:
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

Observations:
Verse 18- Faith is shown by works
Verse 19- You do well to believe in God, but you should also fear him like the demons do.
Verse 20- Your faith is dead if your works don't back it up.
Verse 21- Abraham was justified by his works.
Verse 22- His works resulted from his faith, and showed his faith to be perfect.
Verse 23- Abraham had faith in God and was counted righteous because of it.
Verse 24- True belief and faith will always be displayed by works.

Application:
Bottom line: True belief and faith will always be displayed by works. Actions speak louder than Words.

Prayer:
Dear God,
Let my actions display my faith in you. I want to be counted righteous too. Help me to remain faithful.
In Jesus's name,
Amen

Scripture writing - James 2:14-17

Scripture:
14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Observations:
Verse 14- It is one thing to say you believe in something. It is an active belief when your actions show it.
Verse 15 & 16- If you know someone is in need, and all you give them is well wishes, how is that going to help them. You can show that you believe they truly are in need by giving them what ever it is that they need.
Verse 17- Belief in Jesus Christ without out actions to back it up profits no one.

Application:
It is one thing to believe something, but it is another to prove it. Actions speak louder than words.

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Help me to show my faith through action. Help my love for you to be more than just words. May people see and know you through the life I live.
In Jesus's name,
Amen
