I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

These are some lovely pearls of wisdom. However, the last point concerns me. I spent 2009-4014 in an abusive relationship because I kept showing up for one who had done me wrong. Now, I'm in therapy for PTSD. It's important to know when to walk away, and don't hesitate to seek help.

This reminds me a lot of my early twenties. My ex-boyfriend was pushing me to write in coffee shops, but I never saw the appeal. I prefer to write just before bed in a paper notebook so I have no internet to distract me. Then, I got married at 29 and had a kid at 31, and breastfeeding prevented me from writing at night. I'd like to find my way back to writing eventually, but the kid keeps grabbing pencils out of my hand.

Formatting tip: please start a new paragraph every time the speaker changes in dialogue. This is standard practice in fiction and helps make the piece easier to read.
