Review of Words I've Given Have Hit Home

Review by rinsoxyMail Icon

Rated: E | (5.0)
This is a solid poem/ set of lyrics. I can not imagine the tune it goes to but I think it would just flow from the lips into the audience and make them feel the pain of love deferred. That is the important thing for a poem to do. Infect listeners and readers with a fraction of what the poet feels. As long as that happens it is a success. Some people poo poo lyrics as less than literary poetry because it is for the consumption of the masses, but those lyrics spread thoughts, ideas, and feelings further and faster than a perfectly written poem considered an example of high literature. You are not just a lyricist you are a poet plain and simple.

Review of 55 Word Dialog Only Story

Review by rinsoxyMail Icon

This short story leads you down one road of thought about a prejudiced jerk hating someone because of race or religion, "his kind." The dialog goes from this place logically to the end line where it takes a rapid right turn down the path of arachinphobia. You can not blame someone for not wanting spiders around them. They touch deeply primal fears and reveal truths about oneself just as deep and ingrained as prejudice based on race or what not. Really most prejudice boils down to fear anyway but some fear reactions are more acceptable than other.

Review of Love Lost

This ripped my heart out. I really feel for you. Fortunately for me the love of my life loved me as instantly as I loved her. She waited for me to get past my childhood conditioning that I would go to hell for loving her. She managed not to break down the time I confessed my love and then conditionalized it by saying I loved her like a sister. That was on our first date, a date I was in denial about. Love is never easy. That is the message I took away and despite my feeling that the love of my life was easy, this reminded me that all love has obsicals and must be sought and grasped with every fiber of your being.

Review of The Key Women of the Bible

Review by rinsoxyMail Icon

Rated: E | (5.0)
This was a highly effective piece. It conveys a lot of information in a relatively short piece. I enjoyed the way it covered the key women of faith. The first paragraph of each woman's story is the biblical reference point and the subsequent paragraphs out line her acts of faith and the role she played in god's plan. The effort put into writing this piece is clear and highly worthwhile. It summarizes the roles of women in the bible in a cultural setting that did not allow for any real place in history.

Review of Weave Me a Spell

I miss the contest this was for. I entered it a number of times. I won a badge in its sister contest for prose. I never managed to win in this one. I hope that the contest runners are okay and just slipped away from writing dot come for a time. The poem itself is wonderful equal parts of creepy and whimsical. I love the rhyme scheme and the way it reads. The rhyme of dance and chants is a bit of a stretch but it works. I really enjoyed this poem.

Review of The Open Window

I loved this story. I do not generally enjoy mysteries, but this one is of the type I love. When all the clues are there and one character can not figure things out because of inexperience and the experienced veteran lays out the circumstances simply and easily explaining everything as though even an idiot should have gotten it. It reminds me of Columbo or Monk. Great story and I would definitely read more like it if you have any.

Review of Dream

The first time you mentioned the party belonging to Elina then at the end you call her Elsie. That confused me a touch. Otherwise the story was fairly straight forward for something based on a dream. Usually the stories I tell about my dreams are more erratic and difficult to provide a concerted summary when I try to write about it. In this, aside from the oddity of the setting follows a pretty decent type of cause and effect. It is not one non sequitur after another following no sense of cause and effect like most of my dreams are.

Review of How to Auto Rotate Your Wallpapers

This would be helpful to people who are not technologically savy. It lays out a clear procedure to follow. It might benefit with a brief discussion of where to find wallpapers, perhaps with some links to good sites. Another good image editor is Krita. It is a free app for windows. It does not really need step ten. I think a bette ending would be something to the effect of a statement like "There you go, you can now set up your wallpapers." It is a good if short piece. It could use some additions though.

Review of WritingML Small v. Large Tags Test *WIP*

Until I checked out this item I did not realize all the possible links and tags there were on writing dot com. However I suspect this does not reflect the recent changes to the editing window. Perhaps it is time to edit this item. Make it reflect how things work now. Otherwise I found it very informative. It was pleasant to look at and I enjoyed it more than some of the items like it I have checked out before.

Review of Win Some, Lose Some

Review by rinsoxyMail Icon

That was scary, and disturbing. I liked the happy beginning and was ready to settle in for some kind of cool experience only to have my hopes dashed by a possessed lake. I guess their sudden luck ran out. The boat racing around is what disturbed whatever it was right? I could see how it might wake the dead or the demonic. It reminded me of an episode of Doctor Who. It was about an underwater base in a lake that was a flooded village. There was a supernatural component to it too. I liked this story slightly better, it felt more self contained. The Doctor Who episode relied on knowledge of the main character for it to really work.

Review of For I love

I like the direction you went with this poem. So many items based on 9/11 focus on the loss and the destruction. This poem touched on it but it was not the sole focus. This poem was more grounded in renewal and acceptance of all peoples and religions. That is the lesson that we should learn from this tragedy. We should build on peace rather than shaking the sabers of war that always get drawn when talking of these events. Thank you for a non-traumatic piece on 9/11;

Review of Sleep

This is a very romantic poem. That thoughts of one's love are so intrusive that sleep becomes impossible is such a sweet thought. I love the way the last line underscores the intensity of the love. I wish my insomnia had a cause like this, but it is worries that keep me up. It can be hard to sleep with intrusive thoughts no matter the cause. I would prefer to have the problems of this poem over what I have going on.

Review of Mrs. Claus to the Rescue

This is so cute. I love the character of Santa; it takes him to a different yet non-contradictory place from what you usually see from him. The only thing more incongruous to his usual exploits was one short story where the north pole was overrun by zombie elves. I liked this story a lot better than that one. You clearly were responding to a writer's cramp prompt. I am left with two questions I wish you had answered. What date was this prompt for, and what exactly was the prompt? I find I enjoy seeing where different writers take the same prompt and just how off-the-wall the responses are.

Review of Chalk Dust & Broomsticks, Chapter 29

I enjoyed this chapter a lot. It was a little disconcerting though leaping from point of view to point of view in the first scene. You hopped through the heads of all three characters in the scene. It just was hard seeing it from Geoff's point of view and then suddely Nick is talking then back to Geoff or Gina. Still I liked this chapter.

Review of Reviewing Items You Don't Like

Review by rinsoxyMail Icon

Rated: 13+ | (5.0)
I have been doing a lot of reviews lately, at least five per day because I need words for the daily writing challenge. I have come to similar conclusions about reviewing. My trouble is I enjoy almost everything I read so much that I end up giving out a lot of five star reviews. I tend to focus on whether or not the writing has made me think or what I have learned from it. This is deserving of at least six stars for its fine level of good advice for regular reviewers. I use the read and review tab a lot and will usually read and review whatever comes up unless the formatting makes it difficult to get through. Then I hard pass on it and click on the tab again. Sometimes if I have done a lot of reviews of poetry or short stories I will pass until I find something els to read but I usually feel bad about it. If I have to review a particular item I do it trying to remember how hard it is to work up the courage to post things, the effort I put into my items, and the kind of reviews I like to recieve. I do my best to make sure it is clear that I have read the whole item, and what if anything it has brought to mind.

This is a cool story it makes me think harder about the overall dangers of AI it really is out to take over every job and leave us all comparitively unskilled workers. It is a crying shame that it probably will someday creep into every aspect of our lives. I am looking forward to cars driven by AI I can not drive and am forced to depend on my geographically challenged mother in law to get places. We went thirty miles out of our way because she missed a turn today. I am not used to having to navigate for the driver. I wish she would just google directions.

Review of Memories

Oh this is a wonderful story. I love it. It covers a time of life where real decisions about what is important must be made. My mother kept boxes like that for me and my sister. My sister dumped them all on me when she moved into my mother's last home, including the ones clearly marked as hers. I put them all in my basement. I had to throw so much of it away because of a flood combined with a sewer back up and the fact that it was all packed in cardboard boxes. I was able to wash and save most of the toys but it really hurt how much I had to get rid of. I know my mother treasured it all. I really miss her.

This is a highly developed character traits sheet for what I assume is a role playing game. I am not familiar enough with this type of thing to say whether or not this is a particularly impressive one or not, but it looks impressive to me, what I understand of it. I would like to know what game this is for or whether you are using the form somehow to set up a character for a story. The idea of using a character sheet like this to detail my characters I am writing about has intrigued me. I just do not understand it well enough. I use a simpler questionnaire to outline my characters. I like to draw pictures of them for reference too. It is easier to check a picture for characteristics like hair and eye color or shape of face or nose as opposed to having to search through a written reference for appearance.

Review of Wound or healing

Sher is in a bad position. Not the favorite of either parent, therefore she is not prioritized. She suffers from neglect just shy of abuse. It seems like her brother is the golden child as far as the father acts and her elder sister is the important one to her mother. Sher is the forgotten child. The one the family pushes towards menial work. In terms of story It would be uplifting if she found her feet and threw herself into some kind of noble service like the millitary or other kind of success that she can throw back in their faces.

Review of The Unbroken Spirit (part-7,8)

This is awfully short for a chapter. I really feel for this girl. My mother was not smothering but she was always there even when I did not need her. I can only imagine what a mother's disdain would feel like. There is something you can only get from a strong relationship with your mother. This chapter really shows the pain for me. My father is the one that did not care for me and it is hard for me to imagine what a doting father would be like. Or what it would be like if both parents loved and cared for me deeply. This chapter really brought up some of my own issues.

Review of Just Your Average Three-Letter Word Red

I enjoyed this essay. It was entertaining for me. It is a little list like in places but that did not bother me too much. I did wonder why you did not use any of the synonyms for red. I feel like this essay could have benefited from a little vermilion, crimson, blood, or ocher. That said it did keep to an overall tone and theme quite well, and as I said, it was highly enjoyable for me, which usually is not always true of essays I have read. I am overall happy to have come across this through the random read and review tab. Great writing...

Review of Moving In

I loved this. It is awesome I love how Hiccup put Snotlout in his place. I was cheering as Hiccup hammered it to him with a flourish. Half the village probably heard it and Snotlout is going to pay for some time. I love that this was from Stoic's point of view. His thoughts and reactions to the scene are priceless in showing how he feels about his son. It shows how much he cares about his boy even though for the longest time Hiccup was a functional embarrassment to the line. He really is a great father. This story oozes character. It is definitely driven by character. The setting is pretty clear but does depend a little on an awareness of the prior media. What did you think of the live action movie. I have not seen it yet and am hesitant because of the way disney screws up their live action versions.

Review of The Great Diacritic Disaster

Okay... So the weird squiggly things in their written language made it unpronouncible? Weird. At first I could not tell whether this was just in some kind of mystical fantasy world but then you grounded it in our world. Perhaps not a real country but still bound up in our world. I like the structure of the story. The framework of it being some kind of tour is cool.

Review of Charlie boy Dickens

I like this poem. It is a really playful tribute to one of the worlds greatest writers. It does not seem like it is exactly themed to fit the subject. It is a little too light hearted for me. I think about what I have read of the things Dickens wrote and the first line of this poem does not really fit for me. I like the poem despite or because of all that.

Review of Say it Again

Cool story! Awesome plot. So plausibly implausible. We know next to nothing about the universe. There are still things we are learning about the planets and other bodies orbiting our home star, so I could see some time in the distant future we could stumble across something like this. It reminds me of a Doctor Who episode, I think it is called "The Impossible Planet." The docto and his companion arrive on a planet that is somehow in a stable orbit practically within the event horizon of a black hole. An ancient evil is imprisoned beneath the surface of the planet. It attempts to escape the trap by possessing one of the scientists and using him as a vessel for its consciousness. The doctor's companion ejects the possessed scientist from the escape pod.
