I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

You set the scene very well, but this could use more direct action. It reads like a summary.

Try avoiding forms of the verb “to be” such as is, are, was, were, etc. This is known as passive language. Using more colorful verbs can greatly strengthen your writing.

This reminds me a lot of how my husband described his life before he talked to a therapist. Please do. A therapist can make a huge difference.

The grammar could use work, and it also reminds me of my husband's grammar. If you want a more in-depth look at sentence structures, I recommend reading "The Elements of Grammar" by Margaret Shertzer.

I understand that comedy is the intent here, but cats are placental mammals and have very similar gonads to humans. Eggs and feces typically come out of a cloaca. It is a marvelously funny thing that both excrement and the next generation come out of the same hole, just use a different animal.

I'm not a basketball fan, but knowing about this person helps me have a little more appreciation for it.

Formatting tip: when writing on the internet, add a blank line between paragraphs. It's standard practice and easier on the eyes. Indentation is used in books for economy of paper, but since paper is not an issue on the internet, we use an extra line.

Thanks for requesting my review!

What stood out to me about the guy from the start is that he's rich and money clearly can't buy happiness. It seems like he's going through the motions with other women.

"Why can't you move on?" and the lines surrounding that tugged on the heartstrings the most. That made the situation painfully clear.

The ending lines from "'So?' He asks." onward were most confusing to me.

It is an intriguing concept, but I'm rather burned out on rich characters at the moment. I used to be able to lose myself in that sort of fantasy, but it has worn thin for me. If this came to me as a submission, I would need a complete book or a set of multiple short stories to consider since that is how my press operates. I'm actually on indefinite maternity leave now, so I'm not considering new work anytime soon.

This provides a lot of food for thought. I find mushrooms delicious, too. If people think they are disgusting, that's their loss. That reminds me of a guy I had a fling with who thought that fish were disgusting because they were a lower life form than other animals. It's all interconnected!
