Review of Days of Yore
Review by elephantsealer

Rated: 13+ | N/A (Review only item.)
Reviewing "Days of Yore" was interesting because it recalls the fun days when one was young and family-oriented. Remembering about childhood days and the many activities of youth becomes a lovely connection, a feeling of having lived somewhere before, that was filled with the love of families. This connection becomes a memory that strenghtens the love between family members as they grow into adulthood. An interesting concept...

Review of legacy
Review by elephantsealer

"legacy" is a short tale of a father, whose memory was evoked by a tree that was obviously planted by the father before his death. The two individuals were a husband and wife, whose memory of the father was obviously not good nor loving at all. The fact that the husband began to cut the tree down with "the axe his father had been so proud of" tells of the intense hatred in the son's heart...

Do we hate that much as human beings? Or do we find forgiveness the better way to remember someone who was not loved at all? I wonder...

Writing is an interesting way to tell a story, and tell it in such a way that it is clear to the reader. The tale of "The Moonlight Pact" sets out to tell of a pact between two individuals, "Unconditionally", which apparently was about "Love"... Interesting, indeed...

My suggestion about "Ask Me No Question...I'll Tell You No Lies": I would still give him the punishment he deserves: a hug and a kiss, and a strong warning to tell the truth next time....
How's that???????

"Twelve Miles from the Fire" tells of a singing Nightingale, and the strong belief of the characters in this tale that the fire would eventually get stronger but would head away to a different direction. The characters were quite certain that Nightingale Clearing would not burn down! Such a strong belief in a Nightingale, indeed...

The story of "The Pie Thieves" tells of the difference between a Grandma's way of discipline as against her daughter's/son-in-law's ways. Maybe in this tale, Grandma's way is much more effective than the daughter's/son-in-law's ways. In real life, we see the differences between the old way as opposed to the modern way. However, I would always choose the old, practiced way of discipline... As the author of this story said, "Drastic times call for drastic measures."

"Devil of the Ocean" tells of the unfortunate victims of a storm in the ocean: Jake, his wife, Kim, and the devastating fact of a child in the boat that was tossed, turned and possibly slammed somewhere as the storm continued its grip of the ocean... It is an unfortunate sail; and probably a lesson to those who love to sail...

Review of Who am I?
Review by elephantsealer
In affiliation with SENIOR CENTER GROUP
Rated: E | (3.5)
The question of "Who am I" is a question that, I believe, cannot be answered by any one or by the person asking the question. We ask how did we come to be? And why would I consider myself unique? We can ask all these questions as much as we want to. Were we created by a god? Or did we become human because of "magic"? What was the purpose of the Bible's story of Adam and Eve? How about the story that we became because god created us through Adam's rib? How did I become human?

Questions. And more questions. And if we look at it some more, there is no answer, no definite and reliable reply to the questions; the many questions that develop when we think more of our humanity. So, maybe we should just not think of who, why, when, where, and how did we become a human? Maybe we should carry on being human; remembering the goodness and the beauty of our humanity. Indulging in questions of our humanity only lead to many, many more questions - that cannot and probably will never be answered...

So, there we are... welcome to my world, human...

In response to "Hurricane Camilla strikes again", I would like to note that both Prince Harry and Meghan have become ordinary, stupid, ridiculous; they have spoken through the media, whom they both disliked so much and hate; that they are both showing how stupid they have become. They have become just plain, ordinary citizens, who complain too much, talk too much and gramble too much of what they are and how they are doing. They have lost the ability to be prudent, to be really and truly royal. They are mere "mouths" that never stop talking, never learning to behave in a royal manner, and most of all, just "splashing all their negativity all over because they have actually been "thrown" out because they want to spread the fact that they are actually worse than Camilla, Prince William and Kate.

The Queen, herself, did not actually like the way these two, Harry and Meghan, for talking too much, for showing how little they think of themselves, for bragging like the "dirt" they are. They never requested the Queen's advice to leave their royal place; and they have the nerve to carry on talking to the media; the media they hate so very, very much....

This is a bit too much really because the media is just enjoying all this stupidity; because now they are selling copies of their newspapers...

Let us now take sides in regard to all these stupidity that Harry keeps bringing up. This is exactly what the Queen did not want to happen. Rumors and guesses that both Harry and Meghan are bringing out become the fact that they are hurting too much for disregarding the Queen's advice

It is really difficult to be fair when it comes to mumbling voices that talk, talk, talk and talk some more. One can see how much they are hurting; and they have to talk back because that is the only way they can try and get satisfaction for their stupidity...

All good wishes,

Review of Sophie's Father

After my review of "Sophie's Father", I felt, like the mother, that things are now complete. For many years, the mother held a hope in her heart, not knowing that some where there was a person, who was as hopeful.

This is a pleasant story and written with an ending that restored the hopes of two people; even as each one did not know how the story was going to end... It is much a joy to see the love of both mother and Dad as well as the joy in the heart of the daughter...

"Oct 21 Setting Description" tells of Sasza, "to his family and friends", of his love to go camping. It is a tale of writer's love of "a sense of history"; of "the verdant areas calmed him": and further of the "wind rustling through the leaves" that soothed him; and more interesting is his reason to move "quickly to an open space" when he reasoned that if "he didn't write anything new" that it was all right because he was in a "space close to the women", who were in "bikini-clad". The things writers say when they do not wish to write...

I must say, Sue, you do write well. I believe I mentioned to you once to try and publish your works. You know, you can publish a whole book, using all the short stories you do so well. Your work, "Back When We Were Beautiful" is another piece that tells a simple tale of a person, whose memories comes rushing back at the wedding of a granddaughter. It is easy to read and understand; and reminds me of the many memories that sometimes fill my head from one day to another... Do you have memories, too???????

All good wishes,

Lilia

"Batteries not included" is a tale of two Irish brothers; one was a comedian, who died after suffering from an illness. The story goes on to say that the dying brother wanted what he calls a "last laugh", which was supposed to be the recorded voice of the dying man. He requested his brother to put batteries in the recorder, and play it, "Let me out! It's dark in here. Help! Help!" at the time he was buried. It did scare a lot of the people attending the burial; however, the brother said it was a joke his brother wanted to play. A few weeks after the burial, the brother discovered there was no batteries in the recorder. At this point of the story, we, the readers, are meant to believe that the dying man himself screamed out the words, and not the recorder.

In my review of the tale, I found it rather interesting because I, for one, have very little knowledge of the Irish practice of burial. However, reviewing this tale did bring out the point that maybe the dying man himself did the screaming... Possible you would say? Could be...

However, whatever is written, one can only believe or disbelieve whose voice did ring out at the point when the man's body was lowered into the ground...

Review of Dad’s cure
Review by elephantsealer
In affiliation with SENIOR CENTER GROUP
Rated: E | (3.5)
"Dad's Cure" tells of a Dad who believes in "his home made remedies". We read of people like "Dad" and in some ways we come to believe in what he advocates because his "remedies" are meant to cure because those cures have been tested and tested by other people; and they did work for others who used his "remedies". However, when this "Dad" did injure himself through a fall, he did request his wife to "bring in a drop of my home brew", which most probably helped him much more to recover from his "multiple broken bones".

We begin to understand this Dad's way of thinking; and if we must prove that he is right, then it probably may take many years before we can disprove his way of thinking. The flow of this tale does lead us to understand his belief in his "home made remedies".

Review of Interrogated
Review by elephantsealer
In affiliation with SENIOR CENTER GROUP
Rated: ASR | (3.5)
In "Interrogated", we come face to face with a man, who is "bound tightly by a length of coarse rope" as he struggles to move. The man, however, thinks of a "rich wood finish and dull grow" desk as further he tells himself, "the money I had received for selling agency secrets didn't seem worth it."

In this short piece, we read about the trivial things a person thinks about, even as he tries to move against the tight "rough fibers" that holds him tightly to a "metal chair". At the end of the tale, the man again trivializes about the "money" he got for "selling agency secrets". I would observe that this is probably a typical reaction of a man who, at the moment of his demise, "bravely" tells himself what is going to happen to him at that very moment is nothing at all compared to all his misdeeds, which to his own thinking is his alone.

Vomitting on a whale as told in "The day I vomitted on a whale" tells of how a group of young girls opt to see a whale. Unfortunately, the weather turned and the boat rocked so much that practically all passengers heaved, turned green and vomitted. It was not a good feeling, although there was a small satisfaction: that of seeing a whale, even if one or two did vomit on it...

I always try to remember that the sea is something that cannot be controlled. Even during these days, when large cruises make people believe that turning green and vomitting during a stormy weather in the sea is not possible. But do not fall for it because there is always that little chance that you would turn green and vomit... and it happens every time... However, when all the greening and vomitting is done, and one has achieved a dream to see the whales or enjoyed a cruise at sea, surely the "after" becomes just another experience that one can add to others... and so on, we learn and we live...

"How to Deal with Negative Comments" gets to the point with regards to reviewing. This piece of work gets to the point: why some comments, especially the negative ones, should not be taken personally. This is a good advice because the author actually says that "negative comments" are a "reflection of the person leaving the comment" because of his/her own issues and insecurities. There is indeed truth to this advice, and writers who have had experiences of getting negative comments turn out to be as good or better than the person giving the comment. It is a good and valid advice, and I would say, it is indeed a great idea from the writer.

Review of Heist

"Heist" gives us something to laugh about: men who were not only guilty of the crime of stealing; they are also found to be stupid for doing a crime that was not planned well. Are there really men who plan a "job" and actually do not, first of all, find out what they are stealing? I guess there are, as this story ends with the Judge calling the guilty bunch a "bad case of diarrhoea". What a laugh...It is fun to read this tale, and a very good lesson to learn, especially directed to men who think they are "tough"...

Review of Gone fishing
Review by elephantsealer

"Gone Fishing" reminds me of people who get into accidents during fishing. This tale, however, goes to tell how a person, struggling to stay alive when he accidentally falls in the water. Through his thoughts, we learn that he is a man who tries to be calm while being swept away in raging waters; and how his thoughts turn to a "hope" that his fishing friend would realize what happened to him...

The tragedy of fishing is very much what this tale is about; and the fact that there are people who are aware of accidents that may befall others while fishing. It is a tale of hope from a man being swept away in the water as well as a tale of bravery of those who search and continue to search for the missing until the missing is saved. Well done, I should like to tell the author.

Review of Aerobics

"Aaerobics" tells the story of Jan, who, described herself as "a foolish woman falling for the sweet words of a man", and realized "she had sabotaged her life". In her room that had an "iron door", and that echoes with the "sound of jangling keys", she came face to face of her loss of a good husband in Joe, and the reality that she was now a "fifty-six-year-old, overweight failure", who was also disowned by her children.

It is a sad reality, and an enormous loss of dignity, love and peace of mind when a woman deliberately ruins her life, for a temporary, flitting blast of physical enjoyment... This tale is as much a reality and a wake-up call to any woman or man for that matter. The pain from such a mistake cannot be relieved through regrets... Well done, Sumojo; you do write such interesting works...

Review of The Collection
Review by elephantsealer

Rated: ASR | (3.5)
"The Colllection" tells us of Yelonda and Naithan, and about the collection of "jade" in Yelonda's apartment, and the question of why Naithan took some of Yelonda's collection. Did he take them because he thinks Yelonda can afford to pay for that evening's meal? Or is he just one guy who believes a girl should pay for her own meal? At the end of the story, we find that Yelonda did discover the loss of some of her collection; and that Naithan must now return what he took... And if we finish the tale, I would say that Naithan must now face Yelonda, apologize; and I would like to say, too, that Yelonda "kicks" him out of the apartment... Quite a tale indeed...
