Yoyo Brett Favre and his re-re-return to football...now last shot at glory corrupted?

(Let's see how the Mississippi scandal plays out before I can properly comment. not lookin' good, Brett.)

This blog chronicles the ups and downs since his tearful departure from Green Bay in early 2007 to his brief flirtation with the Jets to another renaissance in the land of 10,000 lakes. Little did I know this rollercoaster ride would have this many ups, downs and turns.

And then there were the accusations of a bounty on Favre in that NFC Championship game against the Saints. This blog is mostly an archive but will be updated from time to time. There's no chance he'll come out of retirement now? Favre is still the NFL's version of Elvis.

It's his 20th and likely final NFL season. Does the long trail end in Minnesota after one remarkable season? We wait again to see if Brett Favre is 'all in' for another Super Bowl run. Along the way, he still knows how to make headlines.

Reread and recall the events leading up til now.

Move forward? How about trudge forward, with the indignity that clasps about your indifferent ankles.

My old lead in...I had many purposes for this recent blog, but now it is devoted to the Brett Favre retirement saga and all the bull that Ted Thompson can fling at the wall to see what sticks.

Clearly, we've moved away from that since the Packers were bounced in the first round of the playoffs. They got schooled by the master Favre who lead the Vikings to the NFC North division title. Putting up the best stats of his careers, people keep waiting for him to run out of gas. As of this writing, he's heading into New Orleans.

Now, on to my bloggin' until this thing is done.

Who's the yo-yo (Favre) and who's the string (Packers)? And who is yanking my chain (?!)

I grew up in Upper Michigan and followed teams like the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Bucks and Brewers, because of the geography and what little sports programming the rabbit ears could pick up. But when I became a reader, sports took on all kinds of dimensions as I became a huge fan of Johnny Bench and the Cincinnati Reds or that college phenom 'Pistol' Pete Maravich.

I followed the Packers since their mediocrity in the post-Lombardi days before another legend was born with the Mississippi mudslinger Brett Favre. I unwittingly started blogging about him in the wake of his retirement and little did I know I would still be writing about him now.

I take aim at sports with a naive perspective, hopeful that the icons can still inspire little ones to follow the glory and dreams of tomorrow. I'd like to separate the intense media focus and remove the cynicism while avoiding the maudlin over-hype to see what's real and appreciable about players and sports today.

I don't know what I just said...

but moving on...

Does a bounty entail cheating? Does a bounty allow a team to gain an unfair advantage against their opponents? Just consider that when assessing what the Saints did. That being said, what makes this case different from the pots commonplace around the NFL is that it was funded by sources besides the players and led by an NFL coach. The Saints deserve to get penalized (at least tons of suspensions, fines, and lost draft picks) more heavily than the Patriots did after Spygate, but the offense in itself is, in my opinion, horrible for the NFL but less so than Spygate.

Thank You Stacy,

I couldn't have said that better. You sum up some very good points, especially about how to feel about the upcoming season. I think management shot itself in the foot with this fiasco, likely why they hired spin doctor Ari Fleischer to clean up their mess.

I hope Brett is happy and it shows when he plays, because its about how fun it is to watch him play. The Packers should have valued what he meant to fans more than the headache they portray with this retirement/commitment saga. I think there was more behind the scenes that we don't know about, like trying to get him to change the way he played to be a better game manager.

The ugliness won't go away soon. This will leave fans bitter and empty for years to come, knowing he wanted to come back to play, knowing we had one more title shot with him. I can't believe they threw that all away over this Hatfield and McCoy like feud. The Packers will likely further remove any Favre distraction by keeping their players away from the subject. To keep them focused on football, they'll remove anything that will remind them of 'ol number four. Like, tearing down the "Thanks For The Memories" banner in the Lambeau field atrium, for starters.

I think I need to go kick something real hard now!

Thankfully, I don't have a dog.

But, what can you do. I'm sure some of the sting will be gone. And, getting to watch him play again will be a plus. I really hope he does well and makes the Packers regret the course they took to remove him from the team. And, I'm sure Brett would like that too, though he won't say it publicly. I'm proud of him for taking the high road, at least.

He's moving forward, too.

I don't know, such a small gift from such a child probably touched them, and I would think that they put the flowers in a vase.

I am not a big football fan, but I was aware of all the uproar going on. Hopefully things will heal and Favre will come back home.

I was a member of the media in '97 when they gave out rings to players for their Super bowl win, but they excluded a few people who moved on. I was amazed at how the local press could be silenced by the organization into not reporting the fact that the team's field goal kicker Chris Jacke and a few others were excluded from the ring ceremony and not given rings because they went to play for some other teams. I felt helpless as a news assignment editor for a local TV station and could see how the Packer organization could hold the local media hostage.

It's a little different when ESPN or some big news network gets wind of something and decides to report it. Now, the Packers are just silent while Greta Van Susteren lets Favre hang everything out there. They might be working like crazy behind the scenes like telling sources, 'are you going to let a news woman scoop you guys who report sports for a living?' They won't be able to shut him (Favre) up like they can the local press and players of lesser stature who want to keep earning a paycheck.
